Per data, the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II led flick in course to gross $20.7 million in the US in its opening weekend.
The feat would position the Universal Pictures / MGM production as one of the highest launching films of 2021 domestically in a market that is rapidly trying to regroup after a year like no other.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, the new film – which is deemed a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 original – sees the blood-spilling history of the Candyman married with an exploration of gentrification and other unique elements that give the latest incarnation a contemporary kick.
With an attached $25 million budget, the movie – which also stars Teyonah Parris – is tracking towards a healthy overall profit too.
Much deserved!
