From ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ to ‘Ali,’ ‘Gemini Man,’ and many more, Will Smith has brought no shortage of groundbreaking and critically acclaimed roles to life over his tenured, 3-decade career.
Yet, despite being one of the most lauded actors of his time, the 53-year-old’s trophy case had been unforgivably devoid of the industry’s top acting honors – Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards.
Sunday (January 9), the latter opted to change that.
Smith’s portrayal of Richard Williams, father of tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams, in the 2021 biographical film ‘King Richard’ has seen the actor crowned the year’s winner of the ‘Best Performance By an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ Golden Globe.
Will, who earned his first Golden Globe nod in 1993 for his role in ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ would go on to nominated five more times over his career for work across TV and film before finally landing an honor in 2022.
He becomes the fifth Black man to take home the trophy in the show’s 79-year history (following previous wins from Forest Whitaker, Denzel Washington, Chadwick Boseman, and the late Sidney Poitier).
