Angela Bassett, one of the most revered actresses in movie and television history, is no stranger to seeing her name printed on some of the entertainment industry’s top awards over her 35-year career.
To no surprise, the 2022 NAACP Image Awards proved no different.
Look inside to see how big her win at the 53rd annual edition of the ceremony (February 26) inked her in its history books.
Nominated for Outstanding Actress In A Drama Series for her role as Athena Grant on FOX’s hit crime drama ‘9-1-1,’ Bassett topped Dawn-Lyen Gardner (Queen Sugar), Octavia Spencer (Truth Be Told), Queen Latifah (The Equalizer), and Rutina Wesley (Queen Sugar) to take home the honor.
Presented by Questlove at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem on Saturday (February 26), Angela graciously accepted the award on behalf of herself and the show’s creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear.
“Thank you NAACP for your support tonight and my entire career,” she said in the video seen above. “Definitely want to thank my fellow nominees whose work is consistently nuanced and beautiful and inspiring.”
The trophy comes as Angela’s 13th NAACP Image Award win, having previously won for her roles in ‘Malcolm X,’ ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It,’ ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back,’ and many more. With the victory, she extends her record as the award show’s most awarded actress and leads a list that includes Taraji P. Henson (11), Tracee Ellis Ross (9), Alfre Woodard (9), Cicely Tyson (8), and more.
Among all winners over the show’s five-decade history, Beyonce – with 22 trophies to her credit – is its most awarded overall.
