True to his character on the hit series ‘P-Valley,’ actor J. Alphonse Nicholson – who portrays budding rapper “Lil Murda” – doesn’t take kindly to disparaging remarks about his co-star Nicco Annan (who plays the dramedy’s central character “Uncle Clifford”).
Having wrapped its season 2 on August 14, the controversial STARZ’ show remains a talking point for its exploration of taboo topics including religion and sexuality – chiefly as it relates to subjects of interest to the African American LGBTQ+ community.
Among those recently weighing in on its representation of the latter concept was rapper-turned-Web sensation Plies, who not only said the show’s content “traumatized” him but also took a dig at Nicco’s weight.
Look inside to see just how Nicholson replied to Plies (born Algernod Washington) on behalf of Annan.
As seen in the clip above, Washington weighed in on ‘P-Valley’ by claiming its gay scenes left him “traumatized.” Not only that, he made a joke about Annan’s appearance.
“I go to the bathroom and come back and I see ‘7 pounds of pressure’ [Lil Murda],’ he in the bed with 300 pounds of pressure. He in the bed with Uncle Clifford. Motherf*ckers should’ve gave me a tutorial. I thought ‘P-Valley’ stood for p*ssy valley,'” he said reflecting on the show’s sophomore season finale.
In the time since Plies’ video response was uploaded to the Web, J. Alphonse took to our friends at XONecole to give his two cents on the commentary.
“This video of Plies is going viral. Plies talking about how he was traumatized from the show,” said Nicholson. “And it’s interesting because he knew every character’s name, knew exactly what they said, and so you wonder, are people traumatized? Are you confused? Or are you just scared to kinda accept maybe who you are or those who those who are around you are?”
Nicholson didn’t stop there, however. He specifically addressed the ‘Bust It Baby’ rapper’s comments about Nicco’s appearance.
“I do think it’s very unkind to talk about people’s appearance and weight and like if you have something harsh to say like the ‘300 pounds of pressure’ joke. Nicco Annan is my good brother. I love that brother and I wouldn’t let anyone disrespect him to his face or through the Internet. I know I don’t say a lot about that, but talk about your own weight dog. Worry about your own height,” the ‘P-Valley’ star said of Plies who stands 5’5″. “Worry about what you got going on and don’t try to play it off to the side and say you’re not truly interested in what these stories have been and the conversations that have been started.”
At writing, Plies nor Annan have addressed the matter.
