‘Sore Loser’ or ‘Justified’?: Angela Bassett’s Reaction To Jamie Lee Curtis OSCAR Upset Ignites Twitter Debate

Published: Sunday 12th Mar 2023 by Rashad

Angela Bassett not only “did the thing” in her jaw-dropping performance as ‘Queen Ramonda’ in 2022’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ but the 64-year-old screen legend has been “doing the thing” all award season long – capturing trophies at many of the industry’s top events (NAACP Image Awards, Golden Globes, etc.).

Assumed to be a shoo-in for the Best Supporting Actress prize at the OSCARs on Sunday night (March 12), Angela sat front row only to watch Jamie Lee Curtis snag the trophy before the show’s first hour had completed.

Bassett and Marvel fans erupted at the upset (as we reported here) – not only sending her supporters into an uproar but also igniting clap back from Curtis supporters who slammed the ‘Black Panther’ star for what they deemed unsportsmanlike conduct.

Details inside.

As seen in the clip above, Bassett was among the few who did not participate in the standing ovation Jamie received for winning the Best Supporting Actress statuette for her performance in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once.’  The award came as the first OSCAR nod and win of the Scream Queen’s legendary career.

While some critics slammed the Academy for their continued criminal overlooking of Angela’s career, others believed – despite the loss – she still should have supported the milestone moment for Curtis.

Some even suggested Bassett appeared to be a “bitter” and “angry” sore loser over the defeat, her second upset in 30 years (after first being nominated for the leading role in Rock Queen Tina Turner‘s biopic ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’).

Igniting a fiery debate on Twitter as a result, look below to see highlights.

    …………………..Really?

Jamie Lee Curtis barely had a role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

I’d feel some kind of way too.

She was a racist IRS auditor. Like….

      Bingo

And if I were Asian, I’d also feel some kind of way that the white person from a film that was supposed to be for Asian representation in a genre they’re not included in…wins.

    Whew chillay.

It’s sad and frustrating. I don’t understand the votes and I’m still not understanding how The Woman King wasn’t nominated. The Academy still has many problems to work through, as evidenced by the story EW published highlighting racially insensitive comments from an anonymous Oscars voter. People like that need their membership revoked.

      Now you know why 👀

First, that EEAAO movie looks boring AF. Second, while I wanted AB to win, I can appreciate JLCs win as she’s been in the game a long time, probably about the same amount as Angela. And, they’re the same age. But, I’m over boring a*** movies getting all the shine.

    • KeyLoLo March 13, 2023

Yesss I tried to watch it but I couldn’t get into it..don’t see what the hype is about ..it’s boring AF in my opinion

We as a ppl do NOT look at the bigger picture.

What kind of message are these Black celebrities sending out when they have achieved so much success yet feel so incomplete without an Oscar?

White celebrities are completely unbothered by Black critics.

It’s sad to see how Black ppl can literally come from NOTHING and still be unhappy because of this award show.

It’s really NOT that f*ckin’ serious.

True Tea is sick and tired of y’all doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.

    Y’all weird AF!

    Oscars are scam anyway….

  7. Haterz Gon Hate March 13, 2023

Of course the media would jump all over Angela Bassett for not standing for ovation, the media loves an “angry black woman”.

The real question you need to be asking is does her choice not to stand erase any of her talent or achievements to date?

People are quick to forget she is a legend and minimise that by focusing on a trivial act. Where was all this attention when her phone stopped ringing and the roles dried up after WLGTDWI?????

I mean, it’s not like she walked up on stage and slapped the trophy out of JLC’s hands screaming: “KEEP MA NAME OUTTA YO MOUTH BÎTÇH!! YOU KNOW THIS AWARD SHOULD HAVE BEEN MINE”.

She kept it classy and did not say a word.

    🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

Eh most definitely not a woke moron here. This isn’t one of them many times that the person should’ve won cause they are “colored”. No, Angela B DESERVE that award.. SHE KILLLED IT.
Award shows and the elite don’t mean s*** anyway. Meh.

  9. Sanchez March 13, 2023

I knew she wouldn’t win. The Academy doesn’t do marvel movies

  10. Candace Owens March 13, 2023

Jamie Lee is as much a legend as Angela. Jamie Lee had a BIGGER role in her film than Angela did in that DULL Black Panther stuff.

Oscars have been dying to give JLC an award for her entire career.

Angela acted like a sore LOSER COOOOON!

  11. Emmie March 13, 2023

Oh Please. Angela Bassett gave a fine performance in her film and thus was nominated for best supporting actress. However, the fact is her peers felt that Jamie Lee Curtis gave a better performance and hence voted for her to win best supporting actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Angela basically played herself while Jamie Lee’s character was, well, very out of character and she played it beautifully. Why is it that every time a black actor does not win an award for which they are nominated, the race card is pulled and the “community” screams they were “robbed” because they are black. BS. “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”. And sometimes the best person wins, as happened in this case. Sour grapes Angela and very unprofessional and ungracious of you not to applaud Jamie Lee’s well deserved win for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

    • ck March 14, 2023

      Well said Emmie… Absolutely agree!

  12. lisa retinol March 13, 2023

Bassett was ok in the film, she was better at Tina Turner, but as they say someone is always better then someone else.

  13. Jay March 13, 2023

So happy that Jamie Lee Curtis finally won. The industry has ignored her talent for years. I’m sorry for Angela Bassett who is a talented as well and hasn’t been recognized by the Academy all these years, like Jamie.

But I cannot imagine what the blowback would be against Jamie Lee if she’d lost and refused to clap or stand up for Angela. Jamie would’ve been cancelled by now.

    • ck March 14, 2023

      Absolute TRUTH!

    • True Tea March 14, 2023

Why would she be cancelled when Will Smith isn’t cancelled??

  14. Fancy BISH (Back To The Future 🤣) 👊🏽💎💋 March 14, 2023

Angry Black woman, why am I not surprised?
