The only thing that shined brighter than Angela Bassett‘s Dolce & Gabbana shimmery nude tulle dress at the 14th annual Governors Awards on Tuesday night (January 9) was the shiny golden statuette she was awarded after an unparalleled nearly 40-year career in film.
29 years after landing her first Academy Award nomination for bringing the life story of Rock Queen Tina Turner to the big screen in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?,’ legendary film and television actress Bassett earned her second nod for bringing another royal figure to life: “Queen Ramonda” of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’
Criminally overlooked in both instances, the 2024 Governors Awards bestowed the screen diva her first Academy Award in the form of an honorary OSCAR.
“Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting,” Academy President Janet Yang said in a press release.
After a stirring presentation from fellow Academy Award winner Regina King, look below to see Angie’s acceptance speech.
