Though most famous for her role as the unforgettable “Whitley Gilbert” on the classic sitcom ‘A Different World,’ actress-singer-dancer-director Jasmine Guy has brought multiple iconic TV characters to life over her 41-year career including “Dina” (‘School Daze’), “Roxy Harvey” (‘Dead Like Me‘), “Grams” (‘The Vampire Diaries‘), “Easter” (‘Queen‘), and many more.
Arguably one of modern TV history’s most unsung actresses, the first step toward remedying that may have come Saturday night (January 6) when the 61-year-young star finally got her flowers in the form of her first EMMY.

The 2023 Primetime EMMYs, originally slated to take place September 2023, were delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Ahead of the rescheduled Primetime ceremony (now set for January 15), the 75th annual Creative Arts EMMYs – which recognize artistic and technical achievements in animated, reality, variety, documentary, and special TV programming – are being awarded during a two-night ceremony over January 6 and January 7.
Nominated in the Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category for her portrayal of “Barbra Baldwin” in the hit Tubi series ‘Chronicles of Jessica Wu,’ Guy – whose EMMY nomination came as the first of her career – defeated Nathalie Emmanuel and Paula Pell for the honor.
She’s only the third Black woman in the ceremony’s history to capture the trophy following previous winners KeKe Palmer and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
To hear Guy’s acceptance speech (as well as the other winners), look for an edited version of the two-night ceremony to air on FXX on January 13.
Awesome news. Very great to see.
