Moments ago, it was confirmed that Perry is returning to the franchise – both in front of the camera and behind.
Housed at Netflix, the next iteration of the ‘Married’ series of films will also be anchored by new addition Taraji P. Henson, as welll as Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Sharon Leal, Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith, Derrick A. King, and Sydney Winbush.
Notably absent from the lineup is Janet Jackson, who played a pivotal role in the original film. Similarly, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson‘s name was noticeably absent.
Based on Perry’s play of the same name, ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ follows married couple friends who reunite annually for a weeklong retreat. Beneath the veneer of warm smiles and pleasantries, cracks appear that can’t be ignored.
In the new sequel, the couples reunite once again, this time for a wedding, as Marcus (White) and Angela’s (Smith) daughter prepares to walk down the aisle. After years apart, the friends quickly discover that as much as life changes, it also stays the same. Seeing their children mirror their own habits, they are forced to reflect on the legacies they have left behind and confront the timeless question: why did they get married again?
The film adds to Perry’s growing output at Netflix, which has been home to the latest additions to his ‘Madea’ franchise and the Henson-led ‘Straw.’
