‘Scary Movie‘ fans apparently couldn’t wait to get their hands on the latest chapter of the parodic film franchise.
Hailed a comeback for the Wayans family (who were absent from the ‘Scary’ third, fourth, and fifth installments), the Miramax production scared up quite the handsome box office opening over the weekend that followed its June 5 premiere.
Details inside.
Despite being panned by critics, ‘Scary’ conjured up a cool $55 million domestically from 3,490 locations, topping highly anticipated releases like ‘Masters of the Universe’ and ‘Backrooms’ in the process.
Overseas, the R-rated comedy – which boasted a reunion of stars Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and more – added $50.5 million across 53 markets.
At writing, the film is listed as the #1 movie on the entire planet.
Those $55 million and $50.5 million openings also mark all-time highs for ‘Scary’ domestically and internationally, besting the debuts of the previous holders of the titles in the franchise ‘Scary Movie 4’ and ‘Scary Movie 3’ respectively.
