When analysing tropes and themes covered by Beyonce‘s immersive videography, there is one motif which takes centre stage in almost all of her art.

The past…and its presence in present.

Examples? ‘Naughty Girl’ (see 1953’s ‘The Band Wagon’), ‘Formation‘ and its wink at the Reconstruction era, ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’ (set in the 1950s) and ‘Flawless‘ (see Punk subculture of the 1980s).

What isn’t as obvious, is the artist’s exploration of the future via magical realism, science fiction..and Afro-futurism.

Afrofuturism addresses themes and concerns of the African diaspora through technoculture and science fiction, encompassing a range of media and artists with a shared interest in envisioning black futures that stem from Afrodiasporic experiences.

Meet us for a look into the other-wordly worlds of Beyonce below…

In an effort to help ‘Glee’ star Darren Criss take his performance to the next level, Pop icon Mariah Carey literally dropped in for a surprise appearance on the forthcoming episode of ‘Lip Sync Battle,’ sending her fans – affectionately called #Lambs – into a frenzy along the way.

Criss – who lip synced to the diva’s 1999 chart-topping single ‘Heartbreaker‘ – also remade the tune’s Brett Ratner-directed music video live.  Just as the audience cheered on his reenactment of the visual’s choreography, Carey descended from the ceiling via a swing decorated in the shape of a butterfly (a symbol she’s been associated with since her 1997 album, ‘Butterfly’).

Tapping longtime producer Jermaine Dupri to assist in the shenanigans, look inside to see your first look:

As we reported here years ago, Gladys Knight made it well known that Destiny’s Child alum Kelly Rowland was her top choice for portrayal of her legendary life in a biopic.

And, while that wish was (to a degree) honored when the ‘Motivation’ singer was picked to play the ‘Empress of Soul’ in BET’s forthcoming, ‘Soul Train’-inspired television series – ‘American Soul’ – it certainly gives the 37-year-old the chance to show off her acting chops in case the full length biographical film ever develops.

Until then, look inside for your first peek at Rowland assuming the role of the R&B icon…

Gina Rodriguez‘ brand is in trouble.

For, despite efforts to present herself to the world as a progressive and inclusive member of the entertainment industry, her actions have given many reason to believe she holds an anti-black world view.

Only right then, that she clear things up with an interview she hoped would clear her name and clarify her comments.

Alas, the opposite has occurred.

Find out why below….

Taraji P. Henson added her name to a growing list of celebrities who have been harshly criticized for offering a controversial stance on R. Kelly since the premiere of Lifetime’s damning documentary, ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ (which features testimonies from victims who allege sexual and emotional abuse at the R&B singer’s hands).

When the ‘Empire’ actress took to social media (in a now deleted post) to compare the high number of hashtags containing #MuteRKelly versus the “seemingly low” number of posts containing #MuteWeinstein or #MuteHarveyWeinstein, it was believed she was implying the disparity was due to Kelly receiving unfair treatment.

The result?  A backlash ensued that prompted her to follow-up with a clarification of sorts.  See what we mean:
