Today marks what would’ve been the 50th birthday of late pop icon Whitney Houston – the larger than life diva whose mere mention evokes memories of incomparable charisma, beauty, and, of course, the voice.

That voice.

The one that could, with seemingly little effort, stir souls and chill spines.  Unlike the trail of imitators, imposter, and impossibles she left in her wake, Houston’s launch was devoid of gimmick and, instead, was birthed on a cultured and mastered gift (oft inimitable by predecessors or successors).

In such, today we salute the woman That Grape Juice-faithful voted ‘The Ultimate Diva’ with our “favorite 50 minutes” of her illustrous career.  And, while it was quite the task to narrow down the countless unforgettable moments the ‘I Will Always Love You’ hitmaker lent music lovers in her time, we can say that what awaits below does a fair job of encapsulating the essence of Whitney.

Take a look and weigh in below:

112′s Q Parker finds his song ‘Yes’ remixed by fellow R&B crooner Willie Taylor this week, taking over the second verse to serve his take on the underrated number.

A hit that should have happened but the lacked the means to do so, ‘Yes’ springs from the same stream that later gave us Ciara‘s ‘Body Party’, here’s hoping this remix goes some way to introducing more listeners to the cut- featuring verses from ‘Hey Lover’ MC LL Cool J.

With a bevy of Pop titans readying their respective comebacks for the Fall, Katy Perry is wasting no time kicking off the campaign for her effort ‘Roar’.

Fresh from teasing and titillating with a series of video previews, the Billboard belle revealed the official cover for the single -the first from new album ‘Prism’ – today. Smartly, the artwork was initially only viewable when fans pre-ordered the Dr Luke cut on iTunes:

As longtime readers will know, we love us a well-planned project here at TGJ and oh is Ms. Perry delivering. Granted her campaign likely boasts many more zero’s than most, the following remains valid: if pushed like a hit, a song will likely become one upon its arrival. It’s a memo we wish more of the folk promoting projects these days will digest.

Anyway, ‘Roar’ arrives August 12th. We’re buzzed. Are you?
