I don’t usually get too hung up on nominations unless there is something drastically bogus about them, which doesn’t seem to be the case here. Everything is pretty much as I expected, with some folks’ videos being nominated simply because they are big (see: Drake and Britney Spears) and obvious picks like Beyonce – who I fully expect (and deserves) to clean house with her noms for ‘Single Ladies’.
That said, why Ciara’s ‘Love Sex Magic’ didn’t make more catergories is beyond me. Also, where is Keri Hilson?

After a brief hiatus from the music scene, a period which saw the untimely passing of her brother Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson is prepping her return to the charts. The re-launch of her official website late last night brought news on her latest projects:
Later this year, Janet will publish her first book, providing an intimate look at her life and how she has dealt with issues of self-esteem. Janet will reveal aspects not known before about her uniquely successful career not only in music but in television and motion pictures.The next months and new year will also bring another film starring Janet as she joins Tyler Perry in his sequel, Why Did I Get Married Too, followed by a new album slated to released during the first quarter of 2010. {Source}
I personally can’t wait for this. I’m genuinely excited about the steady roll-out of news surrounding the record i.e. her new label, producers, title, and all that good stuff. For as tragic and hard to deal with Michael’s passing has been for me and millions around the world, I’m hoping that one of the positives that will come out of it all is the notion that we need to appreciate what we have, while it’s here.
While Janet’s last few album’s haven’t been masterpieces, the music was still very good (particularly ‘Damita Jo’, ‘Feedback’), as well as chartable. Still, they were slept on for silly political reasons. Arguably one of the greatest performers still alive today, Janet remains a force on the stage. Should she hold up her end of the bargain and deliver a solid album, my only hope is that the industry welcomes it and her in the way they should. More power to Ms. Jackson!

What are your ‘Top 5 Songs Of The Moment’?
Rapper Eve has been out of the limelight for a minute, after the shelving of her ‘Here I Am’ project back in 2007; even longer has it been since she released her last studio album – 2002’s ‘Eve-Olution’.
Well the self-proclaimed ‘pitbull in a skirt’ is back with new album ‘Flirt’, which is preceded by the single ‘Me N My (Up In The Club)’; the latter of which surfaced today.
Produced by Salaam Remi and Benga da Afro Warrior, the cut is a complete new direction for Eve. Though familiar territory in that it’s an uptempo, party record, she has taken Urban music’s flirtation with the Electro-Dance genre to the next level on this one. I’m gauging this one will very much a be a love it or hate it (no middle ground) with most folks. As for That Grape Juice, I’m kinda feeling it.

Reports over the weekend suggested that drama-plagued group the Pussycat Dolls were parting ways. However, the founder of the group, as well as the ‘Pussycat Doll’ concept, Robin Antin has gone on record to shoot down any such idea:
Writing on her Twitter blog, Robin Antin said: “The Pussycat Dolls are not breaking up and if they ever were, you would hear it from me first.“Not gossip! Album number three is on the way.”This is not the first time that the girlband have been forced to deny rumours of a rift. Earlier this year, Melody Thorton insisted that the singers were still going strong amid reports that frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger was eager to move on. {Source}
Unless something drastic happens with their next record in the way of sound and more equal distribution of vocals, I can only see the situation becoming worse. Clearly there is friction within the group and Nicole, by all indications, wants to get things flopping popping with her solo stuff. What’s more, folks are bored with the whole Nicole at the forefront set-up; regardless of whether this was the vision of what Robin wanted, it’s not working. The key to longevity in the industry is adapting with the times, while still delivering quality music. Time will tell if things pan out for PCD…

Some ten months after being dismissed from Danity Kane, new solo material from the controversial Aubrey O’Day has finally surfaced in the form of ‘Party All The Time’. I say finally, as Ms. O’ Day, for a minute, seemed to be slapping her name on anything and everything besides what made her a known name – music.
Anyway, O’Day’s remake of Eddie Murphy and Rick James’ 1985 hit – which features Young Money’s Shannel (D. Woods’ sister) – isn’t bad…at all.
Tidbit: Word has it Aubrey is close to finalising a major label solo deal.

Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughters question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesnt always benefit the black community and little Lolas question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

Many of our UK visitors will be well-familiarised with The Noisettes, as the trio have been burning up the charts on this side of the pond for the last few months. Currently on tour in the US, the group are looking to make a splash Stateside and crack the US market.
Fronted by stunner Shingai Shonia, The Noisettes are not new to music scene, having already churned out one album prior to their current ‘Wild Young Hearts’. The latter, however, is the LP which saw them thrust into the commercial / charting territory.
With a sound best described as a Soul-meets Indie-meets Funk in a catchy coating, the London group are generating a serious buzz on an International level. See below their two biggest hits to-date ‘Don’t Upset the Rhythm’ (featured in ‘that’ Mazda advert) and current single ‘Never Forget You’. An awesome act you’ll be seeing more of on That Grape Juice. Your thoughts on The Noisettes?
Mariah Carey’s first ever televised performance of new single ‘Obsessed’ is set to hit screens on Wednesday’s episode of America’s Got Talent, however the full performance was captured by an audience member. While the quality of the video is far from perfect, it definitely gives a real feel of what to expect from Mariah’s promo performances of the song.
I must say I enjoyed this a whole lot more than I thought I would – not for obvious reasons though. Mariah’s attempts at dancing are hilarious. I mean come on, she looked so stiff dancing up on that stage LOL. You got to love her for trying though! More than anything, however, she actually sounded…kinda good. As one who is not big on the song in any way, shape or form, the live arrangement (with its added bells and whistles) worked pretty well.
That said, I’ll wait until Wednesday to see whether the performance across the same on television.

Sugababes – My Love Is Pink
While everyone and their mum seems to have hopped aboard the Electro-Pop/R&B bandwagon recently, the Sugababes were ahead of the pack – as evidenced by their 2007 LP ‘Change’. Filled with dance-floor destined hits, the album also served up the Brian Higgins produced ‘My Love Is Pink’. This one can be best described as Electro-Pop with a slice of R&B and a dash of funk. Great track

Michelle Williams – Thank You
Lifted from Michelle Williams’ ‘Unexpected’ album from 2008, ‘Thank You’ continues to stand as one of my all-time favourites from the Destiny’s Child star. Though the bulk of the album had a vested interest in the Dance genre, it was this smooth, melodic, cleverly written R&B mid-tempo which struck a cord with me most (a sign, perhaps?). Michelle’s voice compliments the production beautifully and the song’s unique take on oft-engaged topic of ‘thank you for making me who I am’ was refreshing. Songs in the vein of this are what I’d personally love to hear from Michelle. You?

Monica – Hell No
Monica released her ‘Makings of Me’ album back in 2006, only for it to sell triple copper (you get the point) after the tanking of first single ‘Everytime The Beat Drops’. Unfortunately, this meant gems such as ‘Hell No’ went largely unnoticed. Produced by Brian-Michael Cox and featuring Twista, the song goes hard. In classic B.Cox fashion, the cut is a mid-tempo with that ‘knock’. What’s more, Monica, as with most of her offerings, sings the so much conviction that you FEEL what she’s singing – something oh-so-missing in many of today’s hits.

Amerie – Crazy Wonderful
The seemingly ever-underrated Amerie delivered IMO one the best and most consistent R&B efforts with her non-US released 3rd LP ‘Because I Love It’. Of the many stand-out tracks featured on the set, ‘Crazy Wonderful’ rears it’s single-worthy head that much higher than the rest. A whimsical slice of 80’s New-Wave greatness.
