In late 2019, the FCC launched an official probe of the music industry to investigate alleged practices of rampant “payola,” the act of a music platform (streaming or radio outlets mainly) accepting pay or bribes from record labels to boost an artist’s chart or certification stats (as we reported here).

Under the leadership of FCC Commissioner Mike O’Rielly, the official examination targeted the Recording Industry Association of America, record labels, and streaming services (many of whom were not very cooperative) in the months that followed its launch before being deprioritized by the governmental organization due to the global health crisis.

The music industry may have thought it was off the hook thanks to O’Rielly’s cooled jets, but now a spotlight’s been reignited on the topic thanks to a scathing exposé recently published by our friends at ‘Rolling Stone.’

As we reported here, Travis Scott made history this week when his single, ‘Franchise,’ debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 – the third time he did so this year alone.

The Young Thug & M.I.A.-assisted song blasted to the top with nearly 100,000 digital downloads first-week (including $.69 discounted sales) as well as handsome streams and digital downloads.  Historically, it’s not uncommon for #1 debuts to experience steep falls in the weeks that follow.

To offset that potential, Scott and co. enlisted serial hitmaker Future to assist.  Throwing on a set of hot braggadocious bars, look inside to hear his addition.

Embattled Rap star Tory Lanez, who is currently embroiled in scandal due to an arrest for gun possession and allegedly shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in both feet (click here to read more), had remained surprisingly mum in the two months that followed the July incident despite widespread criticism.

His answer to weeks of calls for an official response came via a surprise album, the self-titled ‘Daystar’ (released September 25).  Via tracks found on the effort, the 28-year-old not only proclaimed his innocence but also clapped back at a number of artists who opted to support Stallion instead of him.

Initially predicted to move up to 50,000 units its first-week (as we reported here), the new album not only failed to meet industry analysts’ lowest predictions for its opening commercial performance but also comes as his lowest first-week sales to date (among studio albums).
