Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll exhale to the sounds of ‘Breathe Again,’ the second single from Toni Braxton‘s mega-successful eponymous debut album.  A worthy successor to the singer’s inaugural Hot 100 top 10 hit, ‘Another Sad Love Song,’ ‘Breathe’ – written and produced by serial hitmaking trios Babyface, L.A. Reid, and Darryl Simmons – was launched to U.S. outlets in summer 1993 and was a runaway hit.  Eventually peaking at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week 23 years ago, the tune’s radio reception and sales sailed it right to a Gold certification with the RIAA.

Going on to become the most successful single from her debut album, the song’s continued domination of charts led it to a top 10 placement on 1994’s Billboard Hot 100 Year-End charts.  Look inside to relive the magic of the fan favorite and see who joined Toni in the top 25 this week that year:

Migos star Offset is feeling the heat after homophobic lyrics he rapped on a feature went viral.

Crystal clear for all to hear, the 26-year-old spat:

“I cannot vibe with queers”

Interestingly, though remorseful, he seems to think his words were…taken out of context.

Another day, another Cardi B record.

As we’ve reported several times over the course of the last few months, the rapstress – thanks to the successes of her singles ‘Bodak Yellow’ and featured roles on the Migos cut ‘Motorsport’ and G-Eazy‘s ‘No Limit’ – has seen her name penciled in Billboard history books repeatedly for a number of accomplishments including…

  • 1st (and only) female rapper to have a solo Hot 100 #1 hit this century
  • 1st Latina to hit #1 since Shakira‘s ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ topped the charts in 2006
  • 2nd female rapper in history to top the Hot 100 charts with her official debut single (solo)
  • 2nd woman of color to have a #1 hit this decade
  • Only ‘Love & Hip Hop’ act to score a top 10 hit since the show’s inception in 2011, let alone a #1

Migos member Offset has been a fixture in the headlines of late, after being exposed for cheating on girlfriend Cardi B.

And while the ‘Bodak Yellow’ femcee has been forgiving, it’s unlikely the LGBT community will be.

For, he’s just offended them in a pronounced way.

2017 was an odd year for Katy Perry.

She earned a top 5 with comeback jam ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ and snagged a $25 Million check for her judging services on the upcoming reboot of ‘American Idol.’

However, it proved to be the most trying year of her music career.

Singles came and went with little impact, housing album ‘Witness’ tanked, and she somehow seemed to lose the ever elusive “cool” that so many clamour for. In many ways, she became the definitive meme of what’s not popping in the pop cultural sphere.

This reality isn’t one that went unnoticed by the head of her label, Capitol Records exec Steve Barnett.
