Look up any chart this year and Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, and DJ Khaled will have been firm fixtures.

It’s fitting, then, that the trio lead the nominations for the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2017.

Listed in all of the main categories, the group are followed by both JAY-Z and Chance The Rapper, who have nabbed five noms a piece.

Set to tape at The Fillmore in Miami on October 6th, the annual extravaganza will broadcast on BET on October 10th.

This year’s show sees the spectacle move from Atlanta to Florida and organizers are keen to support those affected by the hurricanes in the region.
BET Interim Head of Programming Connie Orlando said in a statement:

“While BET is extremely excited to bring BET ‘Hip Hop Awards’ 2017 to Miami, Florida, we remain sensitive to the millions of victims affected by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with those who are facing the impact of this catastrophic storm. As a network, we are committed to offering our full support during this most devastating time. Through Hip Hop Awards 2017, our ‘Hip Hop for Hurricane Relief’, will bring together some of the biggest names in hip hop to acknowledge those in need as the country begins the difficult process of rebuilding.”

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we press play on ‘Promise of a New Day’ – the second single from Paula Abdul‘s chart-topping, multi-platinum sophomore album, ‘Spellbound’ (1991).  ‘Promise’ –  with big shoes to fill following the mega-success of the set’s lead single (#1 hit ballad ‘Rush Rush’) – certainly did not fail to live up to the challenge.  Released while its predecessor was still dominating charts, ‘Promise’ eventually found its way to the top of the Hot 100 itself where it can be found this week in 1991.  Dethroned just a week later (and going down in history as her sixth and final run atop the singles charts), it may not have known the 5-week stint of ‘Rush,’ but it certainly remains a fan favorite of the songstress nearly 3 decades later.

Relive ‘New Day’ inside and see who joined Paula in the top 25 this week in 1991:

Much like they voiced a strong disapproval of Lifetime’s 2015 biographical movie on Whitney Houston, simply titled ‘Whitney,’ the pop icon’s family is expressing similar opposition to the forthcoming biopic based on her daughter, Bobbi Kristina.

As we reported here, TV One is gearing up to air Bobbi’s life story in an unauthorized, made-for-TV film to chronicle her demise up to her untimely death in 2015 at the young age of 22.  Titled ‘Bobbi Kristina,’ the flick is set to hit screens on October 8th, but may never see the light of day if Kristina’s father – singer Bobby Brown – has his say.

Joining forces with his late daughter’s estate, Brown’s brought forth a lawsuit to stop the film from airing:

‘…Ready For It,’ the latest release from Taylor Swift‘s highly anticipated new album, ‘Reputation,’ is causing quite the stir despite having only one full tracking week to its credit.

Already occupying the top slot on charts with the set’s first single, ‘Look What You Made Me Do,’ a look at this week’s charts see her name penciled in again with ‘…Ready’ as it made an impressive #4 debut on this week’s Hot 100.  The tune – produced by Max Martin & Shellback – was helped to a seat at the top 5’s table thanks to a handsome mix of streaming and downloads (approximately 135,000).  With its commercial performance, Swift not only joins an exclusive club of women who have had concurrent top 5 singles over their careers, but she also joins an exclusive club of hitmakers that have had two singles sell over 100,000 copies in the same week.  All of this before ‘…Ready’s video drops!

In late 2014, the pop darling made history for becoming the first female artist to replace herself at the Hot 100’s summit when her hit, ‘Blank Space,‘ took the place of its predecessor, ‘Shake It Off.’  Could she be readying a repeat?

Time will tell.  Until then, tuck in below to see who joins her in the top 25 on this week’s refreshed TGJ  Chart Check…
