I spent more time on this album than any other era because I wanted it to be special. I wanted to speak on self discovery. What it means to be black. To be a woman. To speak on gay rights. To speak on black crimes. To talk about sexual discovery. And to find redemption in having a voice to do so. Thank you for standing in this movement with me. For fighting in each era and growing with me. You have a heart for life.

Welcome to another edition of Retro Rewind, the original TGJ feature whipped up to celebrate TV & Film’s moving past.
Today, as she continues to impact the world of politics from ABC’s ‘The View‘, we honour the actress Whoopi Goldberg by revisiting her 1996 movie ‘Ghosts of Mississippi.’
In it, Goldberg tells the true story of the civil rights activist Medgar Evers who was murdered by a white supremacist named Byron De La Beckwith.
Alas, justice evaded the murderer for twenty-five years when two juries decided not to find him guilty…and evidence linked to the case simply “disappeared”.
This did little to stop Evers’ wife from Myrlie (portrayed by Whoopi) from seeking the truth from beneath the debris of corruption and prejudice Beckwith was shielded by.
What happens next?
Meet the ‘Ghosts of Mississippi’ below…
November 18th brought with it the long-awaited third album from one of modern music’s eminent male performers – Bruno Mars.
Titled ’24k Magic,’ the project – launched to charts on the backs of its title track (which skyrocketed to the Billboard Hot 100’s top 5) and its 90’s slow jam-inspired follow-up ‘Versace on the Floor’ – is a themed affair that gives music lovers a ride down music’s memory lane. A clear answer to fans thanks to the overwhelming response to Mars’ 2014 knockout hit ‘Uptown Funk,’ ‘Magic’ almost acts as a full length version of ‘Funk’ in that almost every song on the project is sonically reminiscent of some of R&B’s most prized offerings from the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Gimmicky or daring? Some music lovers can’t decide. Yet, while many are praising the singer/songwriter’s willingness to go against the grain of what most of today’s chart-toppers are offering, there is an eery lack of buzz surrounding the project. The worrying notion is supported by early predictions that indicate the album could sell as little as 125k its first week.
While we await the official prediction (set to drop later today), we turn to you – as always – to ask:
With industry predictions for Bruno Mars’ third album, ’24K Magic’ (released today), well below expectation (more on that tomorrow), fans can expect to see more of the chart-topping crooner to their television screens this week with hopes of reversing the tide.
In fact, Bruno-lovers will be #blessed with a double dosage of the divo on November 20 when he not only opens the 2016 American Music Awards, but will also be the subject of a candid interview with ’60 Minutes.’ Airing this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT on CBS, the singer/songwriter is inviting viewers to his Hawaiian childhood home and will reportedly chronicle his road from tragedy to triumph.
