Music lovers who’d written off Grammy winning stageblazer Ciara after the unforgiving dismissal of her third and fourth albums, ‘Fantasy Ride’ and ‘Basic Instinct’ respectively, were in for a rude awakening when her self-titled project dropped in 2013.

A return to prominence of sorts for the dancing diva, the album waltzed its way to a top 5 debut on the Billboard 200 courtesy of the modern-day slow jam ‘Body Party’ and other supporting cuts.  The truest test of her commercial relevance in the day’s music market, however, would be passed if the reignited momentum could carry on to its follow-up.  The answer to the challenge would arrive in a somewhat unlikely single choice:  ‘I Bet.’

Perceived as a clear clapback to her highly publicized relationship woes with former fiance/rapper Future, ‘I Bet’ was greeted with mixed reviews as some praised the singer for the tune’s brazen content while others expressed disappointment over its dated sound.  A slow, but steady climb up the Billboard Hot 100 (thanks to promotional appearances and radio play) would prove ‘I Bet’ a sure bet – a “winner” in some contexts given the unfavorable treatment “pure R&B” tracks were receiving on the pop charts in 2015.

However, that relative “win” would not be enough to launch the song’s parent album, ‘Jackie,’ to the heights of any of its predecessors:

Keen to replicate profit-swelling success stories of yesteryear record labels often use model their new artists on the artists who came before them.

Janet-Britney

Madonna- Lady Gaga

Anita Baker – Toni Braxton

Mary J. Blige – Keyshia Cole- K. Michelle

Beyonce- Rihanna

Gwen Stefani- Charli XCX.

For one reason or another, this practice isn’t always as obvious when the artists are men, perhaps because said labels rarely require male artists to look like the artists they are pulling from.

Unfortunately for Future, he has learned just how problematic this trend can be when a new musician succeeds in “borrowing” their sound.

For, after he was accused of “borrowing” his style from T-Pain, he has been forced to watch the rise of the charismatic and eerily identical Desiigner and his smash hit single ‘Panda.’

Why his thunder-stealing ascent is set to rub the Southern star the wrong way once more?

Desiigner’s decision to cover his latest single…

The Voice season 11 kicks off in September and will welcome two new additions to its famed red chairs.

Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus will join originals Adam Levine and Blake Shelton as coaches on the NBC hit.

True to the show’s rotating roster of talent, they replace Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams – who are sitting the season out.

It’ll mark the first time two females have occupied spots on the US series, which up until now has always favored a three guys/one girl format.

Both ladies have new music on the horizon and will more than likely use the platform to push material.

Jury’s out on how they’ll will fare. But, for now, peep another promo snap after the jump…

It was a streaming-based reign not even Beyonce could end.

Now, much to the dismay of his fans and the delight of his detractors, Drake is set to lose his hold over the Billboard 200’s top spot thanks to a new release by Blink-182.

Lil Kim left fans reeling in New Orleans over the weekend when she cancelled her performance at the 2016 Essence Music Festival at the last minute.

The excuse provided?

According to a rep, the rapper could not take to the stage with Puff Daddy and the Bad Boy family as planned due to “unfulfilled business obligations.”

Folk scratched their heads as to what that was supposed to mean. Yet, now, it seems the answer may have manifested.

The pint-sized femcee was snapped looking all sorts of glam at the Ralph & Russo fashion show today in Paris. Only 24 hours after the axed performance.

As well as posing it up with the designers, she also pow-wowed with supermodel Jourdan Dunn.

Drake, by all counts, is a charting rarity.

The Hip-Hop titan has towered above the competition for much of the year with releases from his mega-selling ‘VIEWS’ album. Especially the cuts ‘Controlla’ and ‘One Dance’ – the latter of which has topped tallies globally.

Interestingly, despite being a streaming force, he’s yet to release any visuals thus far this era.

That all looks set to change…it seems.
