X Factor 2009: Auditions - Week 1 - TGJ '2 Pence'The second week of X Factor 2009 audition stage aired tonight here in the UK. Check out my 2 Pence below:

{For those unfamiliar with the show; The X Factor is the UK’s version of American Idol – with a twist in that groups and over 25’s are eligible to enter. The show also birthed the career of a certain Leona Lewis, as well as Alexandra Burke}
I can’t help but feel that last night’s show was a little dry. That said, Trinidadian Rozelle rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s ‘One Night Only’, as well as the group Miss Fitz take on Britney’s ‘Toxic’ were particular highlights:

Whitney Previews New Album In London
A radiant looking Whitney Houston was joined by mentor Clive Davis last night here in London at the Madarin Hotel to preview her ‘comeback’ album ‘I Look To You’ to select media and VIP’s. Ms. Houston received a standing ovation from the audience upon her entrance, as well as after the album’s R.Kelly penned title track was played.
Word has it a song called ‘Calling You Tonight’ is almost set in stone as the album’s first single. Check out the Johnta Austin penned, Stargate produced demo by clicking here. I see they are going for that Jennifer Hudson ‘Spotlight’ feel with this one. I like. Other producers set to feature on the record include Swizz Beats and Akon.
‘I Look To You’ drops August 31st here in the UK (Europe) and September 1st in the US. {Thanks Sasha!}

Solange Hits Out At Beyonce HatersBurgeoning star and the youngest of the Knowles clan Solange takes no nonsense when it comes to defending her superstar sister Beyonce. The ‘I Decided’ singer lashed back at a post on Twitter suggesting that her elder sister needs to sit down somewhere and let “better” vocalists such as Jennifer Hudson and Jazmine Sullivan have the limelight. Check out Solange’s response is below:

“Sick of people thinking I’m gonna be my sisters enemy. Now that was the “nice” read. Next person who hits me with some negative energy about my sister is gonna get Fox news all over again. Don’t try to love ME because you want to be the “anti Beyonce”. I am the ‘all for’ Beyonce. Now kiss both of our Knowles asses if you don’t like it!”

Preach LOL! It’s actually refreshing seeing Solange address the topic of Beyonce head on without the media-savvy answers. It must be uber annoying being pit against your own sister by outsiders for no logical reason. Not sure I’m feeling the Fox News subliminal gloating, but I get where she’s coming from.

Check out this lengthy clip of R&B star Ne-Yo giving advise to an up-and-coming female singer, in a video lifted from Jo Jo Capone’s DVD. As per the title of this post, you can see ol’ Shaffer didn’t hold back with his words. However, not ones to sensationalise anything, I can see where he was going with what he said – to an extent. The reality of the industry today is ‘looks over talent; not a good look’, but the reality nonetheless.

As for my take on Ne-Yo’s comments, I’m torn; on the one hand, he’s spouting the cold facts, yet on the other I’m thinking I’m not hearing much in the way of criticising the industry for the way it is and encouraging the lady to pursue her dreams regardless. After all, the likes of Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Jazmine Sullivan, among others, don’t necessarily fit the mould, yet still enjoy great success.

Former Danity Kane member D.Woods this past weekend gave a rendition of the US National Anthem – The Star Spangled Banner- at the Cavaliers vs Magics basketball game in Cleveland, Ohio. Though not the best offering of the track I’ve heard (See: Whitney, Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce), D still did a pretty good job IMO.

Randomness: Ne-Yo stays winning Grammy’s every year. I wonder how much his overall tally stands at now?

Legend Whitney Houston made her return to the stage last night at mentor Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Awards bash. Looking radiant and sounding better than she has in years, Whitney performed career-definer ‘I Will Always Love You’ along with hits ‘I Believe In You & Me’, ‘It’s Not Right But It’s Okay’ and ‘I’m Every Woman’. Peep the performance below (apologies about the so-so quality, it’s all that is available at present):

Part 1

Part 2

Not great, yet still a great sight to see; a healthy and happy Whitney doing what she’s renown for – singing her heart out. Hoping for her voice of today to be reminiscent of her heyday is somewhat far-fetched IMO. I’m thinking of this as ‘2009 Whitney’, which a a lot better than any ‘Whitney’ in recent years.

Randomness: It’s being reported – Jennifer Hudson came to the front of the stage and cheered Whitney on // Jamie Foxx recorded her set on his mobile phone // Whitney’s mother, brother and daughter were in attendance.

Estelle To Perform At The Grammy's
UK break-out star Estelle has been added to the list of performers to take to the stage at the 51st Grammy Awards this Sunday:

Adele and Estelle have been added to the Grammy Awards growing list of performers.

The British singers were included in the latest round of A-listers now confirmed to play the show on Sunday.

They will join U2, Paul McCartney, Radiohead and Justin Timberlake in performing at the annual show.

Adele is up for four gongs at the ceremony including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Estelle will be on stage alongside hip hop grandee Kanye West.

The 51st annual Grammy Awards will be held on February 8 at Staples Centre in Los Angeles. {Source}

It’s a near certainty that Estelle and Kanye will be performing ‘American Boy’. More power to her! It’s great to see a (talented and deserving) UK on the grandest of the stages.
