Rihanna – ‘Rated R’ Album Cover

Peep the official album cover for Rihanna’s 4th studio album ‘Rated R’. Pretty much standard-fare and expected, granted the album’s title. The cover was shot by noted photographer Ellen von Unwerth.

One can only hope the record itself, due November 23rd, serves up better material than its first single, the lukewarmly received ‘Russian Roulette’, and follow-up single ‘The Wait Is Ova’ – which isn’t sounding like anything to scream about. As one of those who firmly believe Ms. Fenty’s success is a testament to nothing more than the power of the dollar (see: stylists, paid radio play, media-flooding), ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ was a fluke IMO. Hence, I’m rather cynical about the chances of this record sounding like anything other than a dying alley cat hollering over hot beats. That said, believe it or not, I’d love to be proven wrong.

What do you think of the cover?

I’ll be glad when this whole “bad girl” look is over. Her music is catchy and I do enjoy it but Im just a little tired of this whole look. She needs something else. She’s seemed a little off lately.

Sam u r a fool lol, loves it..

  3. LEA October 27, 2009

but yeah this cover is BORING.

  4. gina October 27, 2009

Sam, I’m so not feeling this cover- it’s too dark and it’s like they are trying too hard to make the public thinkt hat she is some deep artist or grace Jones which she is not! Too contrived and i hope that ‘the wait is ova’ record sound better than that mess that was offered to us cause that just sound like a chant.

Sam you are usually spot on with your reviews and comments but lately you have gone far beyond constructive criticism! ALL of your post about Rihanna have been NEGATIVE its like you seem to really HATE her! ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ was NOT a fluke you don’t luck up and sell over 7 million records worldwide, win a Grammy, have 8 successful singles, and become a trend setter!

And I don’t know what reviews you have been reading but ‘Russian Roulette’ has gotten generally positive reviews from mainstream music critics! and the song is already number 35 on the charts without anything visual out except 2 promo pics and it hasn’t even become available on itunes! So lukewarm is a little far fetched!

And trust me you will be proven wrong! This release will be the biggest of the year!

So please go back to the old Sam we all know and love because you have been writing post like you work for mediatakeout.com! You have truely been coming off like a big ass HATER!

another hopeless rant….the cover, together with leona’a echo cover, is one of the best this year

good girl gone bad was not a truly great album by any means, but it had killer singles and people liked it….nobody was paid or programmed to buy it….people like(d) her, get over it

  7. bobs October 27, 2009

Amazing Cover, of course. Also “Russian Roulette” has received GLOWING reviews everywhere except from Sam, who prefers wife-beaters (Chris Brown) and ex-crack whores (Whitney) to true talent.

  8. Lady J October 27, 2009

So BOBS are you saying that Rihana is a true talent and Whitney is not?! I like Rihana, but lets not get crazy and say that she is a better talent than Whitney. Because if we are keeping it real, crack and all Whitney and Rihana are not in the same league and should never be compared to each other ever!!!

I like Rihanna, but I dont’ know about this whole image.

I don’t think GGGB was a fluke. A lot people look at Rihanna and say that she’s being used as a tool, but what major label artist isn’t? She’s successfully transitioned through quite a few different styles and pulled them all off; no matter how much you’re catered to and how much people are giving you material, that’s not easy. Sure she doesn’t exactly scream “Independent woman”, but she’s done quite well for herself and it a very small amount of time. Eventually I’m sure she’ll be able to take more control over career.

That said, I don’t really care for this new “image” she’s working with, but as long as I keep seeing the willingness to experiment and improvement I have from her (see vocal upgrade from “Pon De Replay” to “Rehab” live in Manchester), I’ll support her music.

psshhh. New layout, SAME OLD SITE.

get some new opinions, or some (ANY) facts, how about that?

You think this cover is “standard-fare and expected” but you jizz your pants over a video for a song called “transform ya” that uses…wait for it….TRANSFORMERS? Wow. Good thing you’re not biased or anything.

  11. Anon October 27, 2009

a few more things: Do you think Whitney DOESN’T have stylists? What about Chris Brown?

Do you think there is ANY mainstream artist who doesn’t have their record label paying radio stations through promoters?

Do you think there is ANY mainstream artist who doesn’t try to “flood” the media when they have a project to promote?

    What’s wrong with you?

  12. Fatima October 27, 2009

Amazing cover. And most covers don’t impress me.

Isn’t there a new blogger now? It’d be nice to have an opinion that isn’t the same re-hashed insult every 5 posts. No one cares you don’t like Rihanna, but the large amount of times you express the same sentiment with nothing new added is what’s bothering people.

  13. jemma may October 27, 2009

The head b**** is back shitting on yo fav flops!

  14. KORAL October 27, 2009

Rihanna is a testatment to how deluded people can be…How this talentless bleating billy-goat got so far has to be placed in SOME kind of record book?

As for you deluded fans out there who praise every blantantly-crying-for-attention move she makes you should be praising Def Jam marketing NOT her. I agree with Gina and the others who can see through this veneer the deluded Goats (Rihanna fans)…can’t. Her image is contrived and being a good mannequin (her only talent) she has sold it to you hook, line and sinker.

Lets wait and see how many singles she has to drop or how many re-releases she’ll have to crank out before this album actually sells.

  15. nickalus Randle October 27, 2009

dude, seriously? good girl gone bad, a flop? seriously man? … OK she aint the best singer, but her she aint no fluke! dude u hating,i like this sound, the cover is kool, i mean, lets hear the rest, so far she has delivered, so i think she will do it again …

  16. XCPER October 27, 2009

I miss the old Rihanna, the “SOS” and “Unfaithful” Rihanna. What happened to her?? 🙁 Stans better not say “she grew up and matured”, because this look and attitude she’s carrying is anything but that. Ever since Chris Brown beat her, she’s been a different person. I hope she gets better soon…

  17. sean2009 October 27, 2009

  21. denise October 27, 2009

since when was rihanna’s album ”Good Girl Gone Bad” was a fluke?!

how was it a fluke when ”GGGB” when it OUT-SOLD/SOLD MORE than the last whack ass album beyonce put out….that B-DAY b*******

  22. wtf October 28, 2009

hey sam, i missed you buddy..trent is cool and he not witty and funny as you are..NOTE TO DEF JAM, please try again..everything rihanna has put out so far is whack..if the wait is ova is supposed to be the next single, then its a rap!!!we have seen it and heard it before and YAWN… come harder or go home…breezy is slaying you right now and he lost everything..smh!!! this is what happens when you lie and suck the life out of sympathy votes yet you know every well that there is no talent there to promote..now you have run out of ideas to market this gimmick and YOU ARE FAILING!!!! lets hope you can get something out of all the money you put into this rubbish..Amerie would have done better with the same budget and attention you are giving this trash!!! NEXT..

ps, note to the stans..A fluke means she did well but it was by luck…FACT is she got those number by remixing those songs till she could no longer..it took her 2 years..i think that is why she is in the record book…she pushed a single album more than anyone in history..ROTFLMAOOOOOO…get real goats, she will never ever get those numbers again in her lifetime…her 15 mins are ticking and cant wait till she exits…She IS on her way out so deal with it!!! ga ga ga ola la la ro ma ma ma..

  23. whystillinbusiness October 28, 2009

You know why we have not been seeing Rihanna? She is in the studio redoing that whole CD, her CD was going to be 75% love songs but the bad reception she got from RR changed all that… This dark edgy fake look did not reflect her street walking when she was parading around before this CD was coming out that’s why people know it’s fake… I bet they want do what Beyonce did and give you a listen before you buy thing..

  24. Steffon October 28, 2009

    I don’t like it

  25. sean2009 October 28, 2009

  26. bobs October 28, 2009

    Here’s the LUKEWARM RECEPTION:

Todd Martens of Los Angeles Times commented particularly on ‘Rihanna’s command performance’ citing it “A midtempo song without overbearing production, the single belongs all to Rihanna, and she makes the best of it — a bit icy, a tad fearless, with the vocal strength to keep the orchestral flourishes at bay.”[10] MTV News stated “it retains the same sort of attitude and atmosphere that has made Rihanna such a definitive artist.” MTV Newsroom followed with a poll resulting quite favorably as “83 percent of the people (poll sample) we talked to gave “Russian Roulette” the thumbs-up”[11] E! Online declared it “a surefire hit.”[12] Simon Vozich-Levinson of Entertainment Weekly said that Rihanna took some risks with this track and they “absolutely pay off”, he commented on the fact that “Rihanna is in fine vocal form throughout, and Ne-Yo’s songwriting is economical and evocative per usual”.[13] Popjustice described the song as “brilliant”, selecting it as their song of the day on an unprecedented two occasions.[14]
