Trey Songz hit the stage on BET’s ‘106 & Park’ today. The singer performed a medley of new songs including ‘Neighbours Know My Name’, ‘I Invented Sex’ and ‘Say Aah’ from his ‘Ready’ LP. Since it’s release on August 31st, 2009, ‘Ready’ has sold over 503k copies.
Songz delivered a very good performance. However, I find it rather baffling that people consider him to R&B’s current leading man. As a performer who primarily sings about sex, to compare him to the likes of R. Kelly or even Usher is quite laughable. He is yet to come close to the successes of those two, either commercially or musically.

I think Trey Songz can sing, but like his idol r kelly, I’ve noticed all his songs are about s** and he’s turning inot more of a s** symnol thse days than a singer. I just which he would broaden his horizons and sing about other things.

I think Trey Songz is the it guy right. I think he is talented and he is finally getting the shine he deserves. Everybody talking about all he sings about is s**, but wasn’t no body checking for him when he first came out. Trey Songz is one of my favorite artist. But I do agree ppl can’t compare him to R. Kelly nor Usher. Hell even Tyrese who I think is one of the BEST male R&B vocalist. Yes I said TYRESE. And he does need to work on his vocal range. But over all this is my dude and hisi album is very good. I mean it eas up for a grammy so that that should tell you something
just for me, trey is more style over substance. he’s fine and suave and all that, but he’s not the greatest vocalist or songwriter. no shade intended, but his popularity is more for how he looks/his image than his actual talent.
But I do commend him on him selling that much. This has been his breakthrough album.
……Um, what do Usher and R. Kelly sing about then? Yes, Trey sings about s**, but if you listen to the rest of his material, that’s not always the case, just like the same can be said for R. Kelly and Usher. And please, let’s not act like he’s not incredibly talented and knows how to produce a hit.

He’s incredibly talented, even if his songs are kind of juvenile. But he’s the man of the moment, essentially by default. With Chris Brown out of the picture, people need someone else to look to and Trey is there. It doesn’t hurt that he’s being much more commercially saavy this go ’round.
I enjoyed Trey on his first cd. He is now selling s** and people are confusing that with talent. However he is talented and can sing about other things than s** (refer: Just Got to Make It CD). compared his 1st cd album sells to this one. Nuf said!
Um, Chris Brown is most definitely NOT out of the picture, but I do like Trey Songz. I actually like his earlier albums better than this one though. I’m glad that he is finally getting the success that he deserves though, because he is talented.

R. Kelly is not doing too much new or fresh. Usher is great, but It seems like his personal drama made him less appealing, and his kind of dated music. Chris Brown is the best in R&B right now, but he’s recovering from his unfortunate situation. That’s why Trey is the leading man. Trey deserves it!

I think it is Trey Songz.. because legends rarely starts at the top, they gradually go into success and he is very popular in the US. Chris Brown was young when he started which automatically dropped him out the category and he more dances.
Currently there are not really any successful R&B acts out at the moment with the exception of Maxwell, so that makes it easy for him. Performance wise, just ok, just Trey doing Trey and feeling himself as usual. But no, I’m not feeling his material this go round.
I meant to say successful male R&B acts in my first line. But anyway, once Usher returns this Spring, Trey will be knocked back to the bottom.

Has anyone who’s saying he only sings about s** listened to all of his music or just songs everybody else is blasting on the net and on radios? Why is his biggest songs about s**? Maybe others besides you want hear it. I’m just saying. Plus I doubt R. Kelly and Usher never put out s** songs such as S** in the Kitchen and Love In This Club.

Usher’s time is over and R.Kelly’s time has BEEN over ever since his situation went down, Trey is probably the best right now, he’s been on his grind since ’04, ’05 and now he’e getting the recognition he deserves. He’s still got some growing to do, but i think the only place he can go is up
Hmm, interesting point Sam, I think the reason why he’s considered R&B’s front man is because he’s really the only guy singer doing R&B music nowadays & he’s getting the most attention as well. Though all of his songs do talk about s**, i think that if he’d change up some of his lyrics, he will definitley be in the same category as the likes of Usher & the OLD R. Kelly musically & comercially. IMO, he is sort of there, but not all the way, like i said his lyrics need to shift from s** to other subject matters.
i got trey’s last album and it was ok. some songs better than others. this album (ie, ready) is FIRE. every. single. song. every single song could be a single. while he doesn’t have enough hits or the creativity to be considered r. kelly and he’s no performer like usher or even c.b. and all of his are about s** & relationships – if he keeps this up, he is definitely the younger generation’s kellz from the riffs to the swag. i mean did anyone catch stevie wonder and trey at the bet honors. yep

I mean I can go on but thats more than enough to prove that s** isnt the only thing he can sing about. If I’m not mistaken s** (infidelity) is what REALLY got Mr. Usher where he is now. He wasn’t pushing any units like that UNTIL he told us about his Confessions. I do agree NO ONE will ever compare to Robert Kelly because he is in a music group all alone but who else is actualy singing R&B right now besides TREY??….. No body. That boy sleeps in the studio, he’s ALWAYS working. Its You can compare Chris Brown and Omarian and Usher with Trey because they’re all a different brand.
