That was in.cre.di.ble! It seems that GaGa was addressing the Roman Catholic persecution of the gay community as well as the military’s ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy’. It is astounding to see how far she has come since her ‘Just Dance’ video to the point that her clips appear to transcend basic concepts and represent short films in vein of the projects created by Michael Jackson and Madonna. It’s safe to say that in the music industry today, there is GaGa and then there’s everyone else.
Sidebar: Imagine if GaGa were to release a video anthology. It would certainly prove to be a better buy than the collection of low budget footage put out artists such as Beyonce.

It was very boring for such an expensive and long video.
Let me reiterate that there is a fine line between artistic and over-the-top. This is way beyond the line of over the top. This is the problem with the world. They see something crazy and they eat it up. Can someone care to explain to me if she’s so artistic why can’t she stop imitating Madonna, Roisin Murphy, Grace Jones, etc? Why is it her videos never match the meaning of the song?
She/he is probably the biggest gimmick ever in music history. Sure, she’s talented, but that doesn’t make her any less of a gimmick.
However, the gimmick is running up. Just as fall as she rose, that’s how quickly she will fall. Enjoy the fame will it lasts, because it will be over soon.

I’m going to basically explain this video to everyone that’s either disgusted by this, indifferent or simply does not ‘understand it.’
The soldiers in this video are meant to represent the gay, transgendered and bisexual men in this society that are *expected* to be aggressive and fully ‘masculine’ men. Them marching around in synchronized form represents the role that they’re expected to play in society – Always marching in a tight pattern, never meant to branch off from that gender role. However, as the video progresses, you see Gaga in and out of scenes, wearing these religious outfits. Those outfits are symbols for the intense religious Christian-Catholic backlash that the LGBT community experiences from religious zealots with how they say that ‘gays are going to hell’, ‘you need jesus,’ ‘being gay is a sin,’ etc.
Gaga is not meant to be the focus of this video. Gaga is simply a symbol for how conflicting religion becomes when a gay man has to emotionally deal with accepting that he’s ‘gay’ when his religion tells him that it’s a sin. Gaga is a modern symbol of the virgin Mary – a cold, religiously bound woman who cares about serving and satisfying Christ. That’s very blatant and evident in what she wears, the crosses in the background, her swallowing rosemary beads, and so on. As the video carries on, you see her getting “felt up” by a man in a scene with various beds.
Those beds are metaphors for what gay men experience when they’re trying to fight their growing erections from their fantasies when trying to sleep at night. During the day, society pressures them to act a certain way, to truly be the biased aggressive man. But as soon as they’re alone, even if they still ‘look’ manly and assertive, their feminine aspect of their sexuality comes to the forefront and they express their fantasies in the dead of night. Also stands for the millions of gays, transgendered and cross dressers that can only show their *true* selves at night when greater society isn’t watching. These few scenes are increasingly sexual in order to show the massive, heated underlying sexual conflict that gay men experience within themselves. It’s restless, monsterous and almost unbearable because society tells them that they shouldn’t express their feelings towards other men.
“Alejandro” is a metaphor for society’s gender role of the aggressive man that society yearns for.
The ‘nazi costumes’ are symbols that we are so bound to fulfill gender roles assigned by society to the point where we are psychologically placed into internment camps. Meaning that we’re forced to act a certain way in fear of being shunned, abandoned, alienated or ridiculed. When gay men get mixed up into that, they portray ‘nazis’ in this video or simply ‘strong military men’ to once again show the roles that they’re expected to play by culture’s eyes.
Gaga is a symbol of how mainstream Christianity and Catholicism religions see the LGBT community.
The ‘funeral’ represents the LGBT community ‘killing’ those mainstream biased gender roles.
The continuous emphasis on showing that one man as ‘Alejandro’ with a scene of a riot playing behind him represents how, despite his throbbing sexuality – he must fulfill his role as a ‘man’ by staying silent as he listens to riots break out surrounding the tension around his sexuality.
The song has nothing to do with the video. At the last minute she decided to take this video in this direction. I am so sick of her. I wish I didn’t even buy her concert tickets.

The video is very defined yet complex. And I like that she doesn’t need you to get what the video means to her, because like a lot of things in life, it’s up to how you see it or relate to it. And it’s good that she stays true to her love for the LGBT community. Heck, even as she was dry-humping the dude, it was oozing homoerotica. She knows who she is and at the root of it, that’s what matters. Keep up the awesome work, Lady GaGa. Okay, here’s my TAKE ON THIS… The video was very similar and reminiscent (once again) of Madonna’s previous work. I’m sure everyone that’s being completely objective can admit that it does visually. It’s Vogue,Express Yourself, even Like a Prayer themes thrown together and you easily notice the different elements of all those influences(the black and white, her look, the crosses, etc) .
That said, I must give Gaga credit. It’s entertaining and very interesting. The look of this video has a very grand appeal to it and her presence is amazing. It’s still not ground breaking. The concept is not clear, but I don’t think that matters to Gaga’s audience or to her fans. Heck, I’m not even sure it’s clear to Gaga herself. I believe she’s just being wierd just to be wierd. Anyway, after a slew of crappy, elementary and simple sounding pop singles(excluding Bad Romance) we finally get something solid. It’s her best offering in my opinion. I still am waiting for more originality, but this is the only thing that gives her monsters a claim to making Gaga out to be an actual artist with talent. It’s still a far cry from anything that defines her as a Queen of anything.
Still, the media wants this woman to have some status and own a title soooo badly. She has shown some improvement. I hope her next album she’s rushing out gives us more substance and allows us to see the individual, Stephanie and less Gaga. So far Gaga has produced below average music albums with 3 good songs between the 2 of them(Alejandro being one of the them, the others- Bad romance and So happy I could die).
I’m not impressed yet, but I see the progress. I think she needs to concentrate on something worthy of the hype. We need to see why Gaga’s getting 9 lives from those that insist on forcing her on us

The song is about how she sees love based on a man’s wallet (she hides true love en su bolsillo [Bolsillo is pocket in Spanish, which plays a large part in the song]). She then wraps men around her finger with her innocent act (She’s got a halo round her finger, around you).
The song also represents GaGa’s fear of commitment to the point where she cannot even remember the name of her lover (exemplified in the multiple changing of names; “Alejandro,” “Fernando,” “Roberto”). Additionally, the line “Mexico, rejoice!” ties into the whole “What happens in Mexico, stays in Mexico” theme that is ever-popular among Spring-Breakers in Cancun.
So, basically, the song is about being promiscuous and garnering as much money as possible, then realizing how wrong it is: “I know that we are young, and I know that you may love me; but I just can’t be with you like this anymore…Alejandro.” By that time, however, “Alejandro” is already in love with the speaker as he calls her name and addresses her as “babe.” Unfortunately for him, he has no idea that she never felt anything more for him than lust and financial assistance.

I liked the Bad Romance video the first time I saw it, but then after I watched it a few times and figured out what was going on and how she was making light of s** slavery and human trafficking, it wasn’t so funny anymore. I watched the Telephone video once and found the mass murder, random crotch exposure, and other nonsense ridiculous enough not to want to watch it again.
Now that I understand this video, I think it’s kind of deep.

I laughed my ass off at Trent’s final statement. After watching the video for a second time, I immediately thought of the latter day Telephone video and right off the tip of my mind was a comparison of Beyonce’s and Lady GaGa’s portfolio of videos. Don’t get me wrong, I love Beyonce to death. I really do. But we all know that Lady GaGa can make such high-budgeted videos because of her successes. Therefore, Beyonce has no reason to put out barely-there videos considering the success that she has railed in as well. Lady GaGa has raised the bar a lot and it really is up to everyone else to either catch up or make sure that whatever it is they do is sincerely their best. I’m embarrassed to say, Lady GaGa’s video anthology would not only pack more punch, but it would also display a more immense growth and development in her artistry. I would have no doubts buying it.

A first album is basically an artists debut to the world. Beyonce’s debut to the world was in 1997 as the lead singer. Before 2008 nobody knew Gaga. 2003 Beyonce had been in the game as a known artist for 6 years. And for her to be out 6+ years in the height of MTV and the prime of BET is already HUGE. Everybody knew Destiny’s Child. Nobody had even heard of Gaga before 2008. So Gaga has been out 2 years with 2 grammys under her belt. I don’t remember DC getting any Grammys in 1999.

This video was BORING, DISTASTEFUL, UNORGANIZED, UNCLEAR, AND OVER THE TOP! I agree with people on here who say that her videos overshadow her songs! I don’t quite know about this one, I think she is crossing some lines here. I like the song a lot, and yes, I haven’t seen this much hype for videos since the marvelous gloved one. I still like you Gaga, but I think you need to use caution from now on, so fresh in the game, you don’t want an early grave, please be careful Gaga.
I thought the video was okay but not my taste and also not ground breaking. The song is pretty good. Since Trent had to throw Beyonce’s name in there, I’ll just say that I agree with Time Magazine’s statement (in their Top 100 Most Influential People website article) that while Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift have become the new “IT” girls or the latest music sensations, Beyonce has become the standard by which all other artists are graded or judged. That says it all.
BTW, Lady Gaga heavily borrows from Madonna in the same way that Nikki Minaj does Little Kim. There’s not much original about Lady Gaga although she seems to get all this credit for being creative. I still enjoy her music for the most part. But her videos don’t really excite me. Personally, I’d rather go back and watch Madonna’s videos. Can’t get enough of videos/songs like “Borderline”, “Lucky Star”, “Material Girl”, “Get Into The Groove”, “Vogue”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, “Like A Prayer”, etc.
