Emeteria is this week’s Cover Star. The young singer was brave enough to tackle Mariah Carey’s ‘H.A.T.E.U’ – a fan favourite from her ‘Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel’ LP. How did Emeteria handle such a difficult song? Check it out below:
Normally when singers try to cover a Carey composition it turns out to be a complete train wreck. However, Emeteria did a great job on the verses, particularly because of the minor similarities between the texture of her voice and Carey’s. While she admittedly struggled a bit with the whistles, she still did an incredible job.

Very nice voice. Top to Bottom. People critique whistle notes but most women can’t sing those notes. Nice smooth and clear timbre. Good Job
HATE U is an incredibly difficult song to sing because of the constant register changes, ‘Lovin U’-esque whistles all throughout, the lazy leather quality of MC’s voice on the pre chorus, not to mention to song is very wordy and lyrical overlaps. That being said she made a very decent effort, and relatively did the song justice. Just goes to show that even without the heavy belting etc. no one can sing a MC song like herself. Prime example of a seemingly easy song but impossible for any other singer to tackle…LONG AGO!

memors is actually a really great album and HATE U is like in my top 5 fav Mariah songs, Def Jam totolly dropped the ball on that album, it was just as good as emacipation imo, that being said she did a nice job

Memoirs is amazing & beautiful and much better than the over-hyped Emancipation IMO. H.A.T.E. U is one of her best and much better than We belong together. Obsessed was a mess though. =S

I found her version more clear than Mimi’s actually. Like I could actually understand all the words she was saying. The whistles def need some work. But it was a commendable effort. I like her tone.

those high notes were NOT bad!!! she did a good job, considering this was filmed on a webcam, so of course the sound is gonna be “screechy.”

She sings this song all in one tone, were as mariah’s voice changes throughout the song which makes the song sound amazing, im sorry but i think alot of people could this song the way she is singing it,.
The way mariah carey sings the song is so unique an amazing.
Mariah songs cant be re-sung, its just not possible. Granted she didnt sound bad, this doesnt hold a candle to Mariah’s, of course.
