New Video: Kelis – ‘Brave’

Published: Saturday 20th Nov 2010 by Sam

Who said flop sales spell the end of a project? Case, point, example, Kelis. Despite the 30 year old’s last LP ‘Flesh Tone’ being certified Triple Wood, the singer has not only toured in support of it – she’s still releasing singles from it. The latest being being for ‘Brave’.

Check out the Rankin-directed clip, which premièred today, after the jump…

As an advocate for story-driven videos, this concept-based clip was somewhat pre-disposed to underwhelming me. This only heightened by the fact that, believe it or not, the London based shoot was very expensive – hence in reality could have seen more effort put into it creatively. Instead it served up boring close-up’s of Kelis – who on a plus side, looked stunning.

A snoozer.

  2. Andrew November 20, 2010

    ..I like the song
    The video…was definitely a miss
    She’s looking good though

  3. Becca November 20, 2010

I don’t care if the album flopped, the music is amazing.

I’m here for music, not for the sales or certifications.

Only IDIOTS base their musical tastes on chart performance.

??? what is this empty video?

  5. Spunkypoop November 20, 2010

like the song! the video is okay and her vocals are depressing to hear but it’s KELIS whatelse is there to expect. lmao!

  6. salz November 20, 2010

dat picture at the top still freaks me out!

  7. Oggie November 20, 2010

Excellent song, Sam your a top bloke but come on man, judging anyone on sales now days is pointless, as long as shes making money from touring its all good, her singles have done brilliantly so if the album has not sold well its either cos of downloading or bad marketing Flesh Tone cannot be denied as a winner!

  8. TresChic November 20, 2010

the video might be plain, but i LOVE the song!! 😀

  9. Angie November 20, 2010

I adore Kelis! I think she definitely found her niche in this genre. I appreciate how experimental her music has always been, but this dance/electronic sound is the best. I swear 4th of July is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Atleast shes still believes in the album and is still trying – I mean I’m an Xtina stan but the girl gave up on Bionic too quickly. I dont care if it didnt sell more but atleast release more singles like Prima Donna and Bionic. Oh well on to the next.

I think the only reason this video might have been expensive is cos she did it in London; so when you exchange the cost from pounds to american dollars it seems high.

I LOVE KELIS! I don’t care! FleshTone is the album of the year!!!!!!!!! Yeah the video was boring but, she looked great. If she doesn’t win a grammy at least in the Dance/Electrtonica categories someone needs to be beaten.

She’s the definition of an artist. She creates art, not product.

  15. lala November 20, 2010

That pic of Kelis @ the top is hilarous. Kelis is cool but her style was very weird in a way. lol

  16. drfenty November 20, 2010

    ………..

    what

    was

    that
    😯

  17. raraskils November 20, 2010

    i loooooooooooooove this song!
but the video is hella boring. 😐

  18. Mrsjones November 20, 2010

Ok is this b**** insane? There is nothing artistic or creative about that picture. That s*** is just plain creepy.

  19. lott November 20, 2010

Yea the video is very minimalistic, but being a fan of the acoustic version of the song I appreciate the stripped down approach to the visual. It brings the testimonial lyrics to the forefront of the bass-heavy track.

Like aforementioned Kelis is an artist and has been creating with her music, videos, and performances the whole “Flesh tone” era. Sales aren’t the focus obviously. Her and her label are focusing on the touring aspect!

  20. Dasja November 20, 2010

I love the song and the video is … different but i still liked it !!!

  21. Antonio November 20, 2010

Kelis is one of the most original artist to emerge this generation, her albums and videos are always innovative and creative, but what’s sad is that she doesn’t get promotion or recognition. She is also a really good singer and performer, just go on YouTube or Vevo and watch her Summer Sets performances

  22. Mr.S** November 21, 2010

Go look at “Get Along With You”. And tell me she’s not Epic. People copy Kelis like it’s nothing ( That red hair Rihanna rockin? The Gray Hair Gaga rockin? Kelis did all that S*** before them) , and the sad part is, she’s not promoted enough to be defended or believed for being an original. She does a wide genre of music, Dance, Hip/Hop, Rap, Soul, Rock. People just don’t know….

  23. Mr. T November 21, 2010

Maybe someone can fill me in on something…..Kelis is about to headline her on tour?? And if so, who’s showing up?

I adore Kelis, but she can’t perform, she can’t sing….and album sales don’t determine if music is good or not, but they sho as hell would determine how good a tour will turn out. No one is buying the album, who in the hell is gonna go see her on tour? Jus a question

  24. stan November 21, 2010

    um, the f was that?

  25. DION-ISH November 21, 2010

Xtina needs to do the damn same! She gave up completely on Bionic!

  26. Kyla November 21, 2010

Guess the recession is ever present with this vid even though you say it costs a lot.
On another subject, is it me or is she clearly talking about her relationship with Nas?

  27. baby November 21, 2010

shes not original but just lazy n cheap

  28. iolastar November 22, 2010

I’m so tired of my girl getting these low budget videos. I like Kelis CD, but she just needs better people.

  29. incognegro November 22, 2010

I thought that video was very nice. Simple, yet striking. I think that we are in this era where music videos have to resemble Pokemon movies with excessive colors and visual effects, in order for people to be intrigued. I am sure that I am not the only one who does not need to experience a seizure as a result of a hyper-active video in order to enjoy it.

I think that for those individuals who can relate to the song, the video was powerful in the sense that it forced you to listen to what she was saying, and the expressions on her face. This song has so much going on, that if the director threw a millions colors on top of it, the point would be lost. With that being said, I cannot understand why it would be sooo expensive – but art does not have a pricetag right? I love it, way to go Kelis!!!
