Former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton continued her emergence from the shadows last night, with a rousing performance of the US national anthem at the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Clippers basketball game.
The 26 year old is reportedly working on her debut solo LP, although there is currently no word on whether she is signed to a major label as of yet. Based on this performance alone, they should be queuing up at her door.
Check out Thornton blowing the roof off the Staples Centre with her soaring rendition of ‘Star Spangled Banner’ below…
While not classic as the Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s takes on the song, Ms. Thornton certainly held her own, turning in one the better attempts at the iconic number when compared to other singers from the ‘new breed’.

She’s always screaming at one point, but she definitely has a shot. I see her more in pop music though. To break into r’n'b, she needs to control her voice better than this.

Sounds like she’s scringing (scream/singing). She won’t outsell unless the material is tight.

She’s awesome. The problem is that she has the voice of a gospel singer. Y’know she like the-amazing-girl-who-auditioned-for-AI-and-didn’t-make-it-to-the-finalists kinda singer. Yet awesome. She needs to rework and find her image as well, people mainly know her for being Nicole’s (slash)back up singer(slash) Pussycat Doll’s underrated member. Keep it going Melody!

I like her power and range, but it overall that performance wasn’t so hot! She’s rushing it and doesn’t know her limitations. I think she’s too eager to show off her vocal chops. Her voice doesn’t have any character or warmth and I must say that Nicole (her former band mate) does. She definitely has potential, she just needs coaching, because there’s still something amature about her singing technique.

I didn’t hear a nice distinctive tone in her voice. She also went to damn fast and it’s probably because she was nervous. Her notes were everywhere and she had no control. I do hear potential though and from watching other youtube videos of her singing, I know that she can sang her ass off! She sounds very similar to Christina Aguilera. She was the best singer out of PCD and sings a million times better than Nicole. Nicole screams her ass off, and has such a raspy and rough tone. She sounds like somebody’s grandmother trying to sing and it just sounds ugly. It’s a shame that she’s struggling to get her music out there. But that’s okay because Nicole’s bitch ass aint doing hot either.

I am wondering where did she scream. But, yet if it was anyone else, they would’ve slayed. I guess belting is the new screaming now. Kill me… Not her tone isn’t necessarily warm or on point, but vocally she killed. I’m still dead @ this comments.

Nicole is the one that screams all the time! Melody sounds like she has been working on her vocals because she seems to be getting better vocally. She was always my favorite PCD member & the only other singer in the group. There were some miscommunication issues before this performance & she couldn’t hear herself sing…But she still rocked it! Team Melody Thornton!
