From The Vault: Christina Milian – ‘Dip It Low’

Christina Milian’s ‘Dip It Low’ is this week’s selection for From The Vault. Released as the 1st single from her ‘It’s About Time’ album in March 2004, the song peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #2 on the Official UK Singles Cart, becoming Milian’s biggest hit to date.

The remix of the track, which featured Fabolous and Samy Deluxe, also achieved critical acclaim, scoring a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. ‘It’s About Time’ also received a Grammy nod for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

Although Milian does not have the most powerful voice, she is certainly competent with a mic and has a natural star quality that cannot be denied. Once Milian manages to keep her personal and professional life separate, and stays focused on her music, then there is no reason why she couldn’t have a successful comeback.

I think Christina Milian got all these chicks in the looks dept, and the camera embraces her dearly. She looks like a thin, but prettier version of Raven Symone.

My main prob with Christina, is she comes off as an artist that you can’t take seriously. I mean, she looks like a little girl, trying to be a grown woman if you know what I mean, but will get better when she becomes an adult. I know that sounds weird, but that is how I always saw her. She doesn’t give me a ‘grown woman appeal’.

In this time and place where all the so-so vocalists with wack dyed hair are the ones making paper, she definitely gets her chance.

Christina’s first quality is her likeability. besides that, she has some acting skills and she can write songs.

I really see her taking where Ashanti and Lauren London have both left. If she stops mixing business and pleasure and stay focused on her career, she can make it.

When I first saw the video back in ’04 I was like OMG little Milian is desperate, rolling around in ink half naked but it’s a MASTERPIECE.

I remember I loved/hated this song. I hated that it was so…. sexual, & everyone around me went into that whole slut-bag phase. I loved that it was my shit, & I wanted to “Dip It Low” too. Anyway… back to Christina. She’s talented, beautiful voice (She can sing), dance, act, write music. People write her off because she’s not a powerhouse & she’s very sexual & looks good. Like they say she’s a industry ho, but if you look beyond that she’s really talented.

I think it’s sad that many people wanna see her succeed just because she’s beautiful. Christina is very manufactured in the looks and talent department. I’ve seen pics of her in the studio without makeup recently and she looks a hot mess and not hot like she does with 10 pounds of makeup and wigs/weave on. I never did like her because she was just another cute, overly sexual, desperate, non talented chick. Are you people blind who say she can dance? All she does is move like a stripper. Are you people going deaf who say she can sing? You may like her sweet, sugar, baby tone, but her vocals are awful and she has no range, soul, or uniqueness. She sounds like Kandie from Real Housewives of Atlanta and Wynter Gordon.

And acting skills? Um.. Just because someone is an actress, doesn’t mean he/she can act. Examples are Megan Fox and Halle Berry. Christina is not a good, diverse or versatile actress . Why do you think she’s never starred in big movies or has gotten huge roles like Zoe in Avatar or Rosario Dawson in Rent? Her image is too young and no one can take her seriously. She has tried her best to break out in the music and film industry for over 10 years, but she should’ve gave it up long ago and went to college instead of getting kocked up by The Dream and hoping that her career would take off. She’s just as untalented as Rihanna, and Katy Perry, and could get by on electro-pop beats and a sex put image, but do we really need another one of those?

This was and still is my jam! Its the only 1 I like by her actually, she’s just ok for me her voice is/was/always will be just so-so. She never could really do the trick for me vocally. She’s kinda boring and there isn’t anythin interesting about her. She has a bland voice that isn’t really unique or noteable. She has classic beauty but she isn’t stunning. And she lacked consistancy with her music which is why she is where she’s at in her career currently.

Christina is cool.

I agree with the people saying she should come off a bit more serious. Her attitude does seem overly happy, and like a little kid enjoying the trip, to some extent. But regardless she is talented. She writes songs. I just think her main problem is that her acting and music careers have always conflicted. She doesn’t seem to put forth enough time to promote one project to its fullest, especially when it comes to her music/albums. Why wasn’t there more singles (and better) released after “Dip It Low” ???
Like I understand the 2nd single didn’t do as well, but why didn’t the label try with a third single. . . I mean a Top 5 hit says something!

@DONTAZZ I have heard that she turned down “SOS” because she said it was to Pop-y and she wanted her album ‘So Amazin’ ‘ to have a more R&B soudn to it, but I NEVER heard that she turned down “Unfaithful.”

@mgaskwater There were rumors that CHRISTINA actually sang the chorus on Jennifer Lopez’s “Play” uncredited vocally, but she did co-write the song. And it has been said that ASHANTI sang backup vocals on I believe both “I’m Real” [Murder Remix] and definitely “Ain’t It Funny,” [Remix], when I listen to “Play” I def hear Milian on the chorus, and I can kinda hear Ashanti on the “Ain’t It Funny” [Remix].

#DEAD at the person saying Christina to pick up where Ashanti left off, ummm excuse me [no offence to Milian but,] if that was the case Irv [Gotti] woulda signed Christina over Ashanti, did you forget they both came out around the SAME time, duh!

C. Milian SANG the chorus on “Play”… just go listen to it. its her voice. Her first album was actually pretty good. Very underrated.

I have her second cd sooo amazing and I love it! but somebody is right, she has the it factor but not exactly the it factor, but ummm where did rihanna come from?? lol!
