Janet Jackson Expands Tour

Published: Monday 11th Apr 2011 by Sam

Never write off a legend. At least that’s the lesson Janet Jackson‘s naysayer’s are learning this year. For, due to phenomenal demand, it has been announced that the singer’s ‘Number Ones: Up, Close, & Personal – World Tour’ has been extended through to the Fall.

Jackson, 44, hit the road in February.

Full story below…

Via JanetJackson.com:

As a result of massive sellouts for performances in Asia and North America, the JANET JACKSON ‘Number Ones: Up Close & Personal Tour’ is being expanded. JANET’s largest ever world tour will now be vastly extended to even more global cities in addition to the currently scheduled performances in London, Paris and Monte Carlo. The North American leg of the tour, which is currently underway, will be continued in the fall after a scheduled spring and summer in Europe. Originally slated as a world tour of 35 cities to match the 35 number one singles from her double-disc album, NUMBER ONES, JANET will now greatly exceed her planned dates. The high demand from key venues on several continents will bring Janet around the world and back again. Several of the concerts on the initial schedule were sold-out in the first ten minutes of availability.

The star, addressing the new scope of her concert commitment, observed,
“When creating music or a tour, I draw from what is going on in my life and hope that the fans relate to it. I am excited to know that the fans are having a great time at my shows and are asking for more. Thanks for all the love and your input on where I should take the show next. I’ll see you soon!” said JANET.

Critics have been as enthusiastic about her concert performances as have her fans. Here is a sampling of the media praise for her nightly performance of songs selected from her thirty-five number one singles:

“More than a week has passed since I saw JANET JACKSON at Radio City Music Hall, and I’m still smiling…” –New York Times, Rob Hoerburger

“This is one tour not to miss, a tour on which you can see a pop icon who has done it all, giving you her all.” –BET, Clay Cane

“This was a concert displaying her growth as an artist and the tracks released during the journey.” –Entertainment Weekly, Brad Wete

“The best Janet Jackson performance I’ve covered in 20-plus years.” — Chicago Tribune, Greg Kot

“Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson’s outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set .” — MTV, Vaughn Schoonmaker

Kudos to Ms. Jackson for proving her critics wrong. There is clearly still demand for her.

It’s now down to Janet and her team to turn that demand into a musical comeback. She’s said herself that she’s due back into the studio later this year. Hence, given that – unlike fellow older diva Jennifer Lopez – Janet doesn’t have a platform such as American Idol to overcome the industry’s silly age bias, she’s going to have to strike while the iron is hot. Her every musical move will have to be calculated down to a tee (label, direction, release). The tide is in her favour at present, here’s hoping it stays that way.

  6. xar126 April 11, 2011

She truly deserve this! I saw the concert and it was amazing! It kept me dancing all night! Fantastic stuff that only a legend can deliver! I wish she continues in the business! I have seen Madonna and I love her too but Janet delivers more music and create more magic! way to go gurl!

  7. Onemil02 April 11, 2011

Saw her in the ATL week before last, and I can see why demand is so hot, she SHUT IT DOWN. Janet shits on these young girls out today. I would go see her again and again because I know I will get a good show!

  10. Ms Nasty April 11, 2011

How is that HUGELY successful when she is doing 3000 to 5000-seat theater? I mean…she is doing good bur keep in mind an artist like her should be doing arenas …not theaters. Last I checked, Madonna, U2, Prince …and MJ (RIP) are / were doing Arenas. So the HUGELY SUCCESSFUL bit is all relative.

  11. royalkev April 11, 2011

I knew I’d go again(after seeing her in N.J.). Janet was AMAZING! The crowd was chanting her name when she went back stage, we didn’t even want her to take a break. I was considering going again to the Texas show, but that wasn’t happening. I don’t know if I can wait until the Fall to see Janet again! I’ll make it happen sooner, I’m just not sure when. I’m glad that I have the Fall as a back up plan though.

Is this supposed to be impressive? She’s playing backyard barbecues and high school gymnasiums. LMAO!

    Please.

  13. DRB April 11, 2011

How is this her largest tour? Her other tours have had 2-3x as many dates and far larger venues.

  14. Jim April 11, 2011

    @ms nasty

totally agreed. the iron is hot according to sam because janet is selling out 3,000 seat theaters. Big frickin deal. her other rivals Prince are Madonna are selling out ARENAS.

saying that I do like Janet but let’s take it easy about this demand/iron is hot for new cd. her last 3 cd’s were awful

  15. TheMan4u April 11, 2011

you guys seem to forget she’s doing multiple dates at these events selling out both dates so a 5000 seat she is doing twice
i think the fact that she hasnt had a hit cd or single in a long time and is still able to sellout dates is great considering mariah Carey couldn’t even sell out 3500 seats on her last tour.

  16. Thedimplepuppet April 11, 2011

I can’t wait until the final numbers are in when this show finally wraps up so you doubters can actually see how well Janet did. Arenas or not Janet is doing a tour off no backing of a new album or label. Prince has a lot of musical acts on his show with him. Madonna yeah #NEXT.

  17. latin86 April 11, 2011

    GET iT janet!
she needs to do her album with jimmy jam and terry lewis THATISALL!

  18. Robier April 11, 2011

Janet and its Jackson if u nasty

  19. B. Hill April 11, 2011

LOL@Sam trying to make this “budget” tour sound like some sort of success. This trek is embarrassing for her. Prince, U2, Madonna, the Eagles, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Paul McCartney wouldn’t be caught dead playing theaters, and most of them have been around as long (and in some cases, longer) as she has. I guess this is what you have to settle for when you have 3 back to back flop albums, and your last attempt at a stadium tour tanks.

  20. royalkev April 11, 2011

@The DimplePuppet You and me both! I can’t wait for those numbers too! I don’t like the constant bickering with people that think she’s performing in front of 2 people. What’s written in black and white will be all the proof we need! I’m tired of all this talk about Janet’s albums not selling. Damita Jo and 20 Y.O. have done platnium. Discipline hasn’t, but neither has Madonna’s Hard Candy, Mimi’s Memoirs or any of Prince’s last 10 albums! …
*Sidenote – I like Mariah and Prince classic stuff (not shading)!
Anyway, I’m tired of Janet always having to prove something when she’s been relevant since the 80’s. The fact that she seems to be the only diva (in the legend) bunch that have everyone monitoring what she do NEXT and STILL having high expectations for her music shows that she’s alot more relevant (music wise) than her peers. That said, I don’t understand why people compare her to Madonna and try to make her (Madonna)seem superior when the interest in her music is dead (and so much so, that people don’t even realize when she’s flopped). They still stay stuck on automatic praise for Madonna when she’s not the legend still going platinum (that would be Whitney) or with the last #1 single (that would be Mariah) or the first to have a #1 in the last 3 decades(Janet).

Again most of Janet’s Up close and Personal tour dates have seating that is 5000+(some 10,000). So, let’s not keep being ridiculous.

  21. shanika L.Overton April 11, 2011

Hi Janet Jackson I’m a bigfan.I love all your music.Janet is amazingsinger.I love your new book.Shanika.Overton

  22. Sheltop April 11, 2011

@Ms. Nasty.. okay so what she doing smaller venues, she doing multi dates at these venues and selling out every date. ex: 3 sold out shows at radio city means ruffly about 10-15,000 people seen the show in nyc… on her 3 chicago dates she raked in about 1.3 million so it sounds like hater are on here to me and mad that ms jackson is back on top doing her thing.

  23. DC April 11, 2011

Why does Janet always get it so tough. Her last 3 albums might have not been classic Janet hit makers but they were still good and worthy in an age of poor music standards.
I can understand dismissal and sidelining if she had really offered nothing at all, but as is clear from this tour, and performances since her late 30s, she is still dancing hard and continues to hold a very disciplined work ethic, which is not what I can say for a lot of lazy current popstars. That deserves praise and appreciation.
Furthermore, as a person, she seems harmless, humble, ‘normal’ and grounded. She is very easy to like….so I don’t get where the hate comes from. I can only assume its jealousy or envy.

  24. 2damnfunny April 11, 2011

I saw her in Toronto and both nights were packed!

I loved it and if she comes again, I’m going to get front row this time (was 7th row center).

  25. Thedimplepuppet April 11, 2011

Hi Kev. I can see Janet dropping a new single the last part of this year and a new classic album the top of the new year which means 30 years in the music industry since she drop the Janet Jackson album. 1982-2012 just amazing. I see why they = (idiots) are mad. #PRESSED.

  26. Thedimplepuppet April 11, 2011

Not only will she be in her 3rd decade of being in this music industry but she’s still is gorgeous and in her mid 40’s HA!

  27. Anon April 11, 2011

I saw her in NYC @ radio city music hall. she was spectacular! The whole audience was enthralled for 2hrs. She is still a force to reckon with.

Also, I was at the book signing here in NY, and she was so gracious. Me and many others were in line for 15 hours. When she finally arrived in her car, she stuck her head out and waved to the crowd.

People went insane! Some almost got hit by cars, being in the middle of the street! It was mayhem!

This all is a testament to the fact, Janet is still a f****** mega star!

Deal with it haters! She’s not going anywhere!

  28. Anon April 11, 2011

@ royalkev and the dimplepuppet, preech.

She is also the 1st artist in music to have number 1’s on different billboard charts in the 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, and 10’s.

To all the haters, don’t stay pressed, “get well soon” to quote Ms. Jackson…

  29. royalkev April 11, 2011

Yes, Dimplepuppet – 30 Years! That’s amazing! … To have started in 1982 and still mean what she does in this industry is something special. This Janet album is going to make people mad. Janet’s still an artist. They’re are a lot of people making music just to do it, but I know Janet’s next album will be another masterpiece! People always start copying her 6mos – a year later and I’m certain that she’ll continue to inspire her peers.

@Anon – I totally feel you on that! I can’t put into the words the energy that was there in room during her concert. The only other time I’ve felt like that in my life was at Bey’s (Beyonce Experience). Still, let’s seperate the 2because it’s 2 different shows that are 2 different kinds of amazing. Janet is one of a kind and I know she’s truly the QOP!

    ThePagewithroyalkev.b*******.com

  30. Spunkypoop April 11, 2011

I love me some Miss Janet. I am so glad I saw her show this time around and It was AMAZING! I can’t wait for the second leg, I will be going to multiple cities around the country in support of my Queen! She deserves all this praise and sell out’s there is still and will always be a high demand for Janet. She isn’t going anywhere and they can’t stop her.

  31. NaQu April 11, 2011

Janet playing the State Fair. That’s right folks, get there early to witness her mime Escapade while you ride the teacups.

    Flop Tour.

  32. Anon April 11, 2011

@naqu stay pressed. That date was just added and what’s wrong with that?

Also, she will be playing the Louvre in Paris under the crystal pyramid. In front of French dignitaries, world leaders, and the French citizens.

She is the 1st female popstar to be asked.

Your fave could never. Try again troll….

  33. Anon April 11, 2011

@royalkev I feel you on that! Janet and Bey are of the few in the entire industry that give spectacular shows nowadays!

  34. Taylor swifts number 1 fan April 11, 2011

I think janet and britney spears should duet… they’ve got so much in common.

  35. theman April 11, 2011

First of don’t try to bring Mariah into this, she has nothing to do with it, alot of her dates on her last tour sold out, so lets not use her as a distraction for someone elses career. Janet is doing great things, she has no album nor single out, this tour was based upon a collection cd. She’s added multiple dates because the tour was in such high demand. She was basically just touring for her fans.

She’s a smart woman she’s molding everything into how she wants it to be, this tour is just reminding people of why they really love her. Stick to the script. Anyway, congratulations Janet.

  36. theman April 11, 2011

To the person that brought up “Memoirs” that did strike gold with a 2 million selling hit single might i add, Mariah has cranked out a hit from each of her last three albums, regular albums that is, the one before “Memoirs” was platinum plus, and the one before that was just massive. So lets not play dumb. People always try to bring Mariah up when another artist career is in question. Find a new topic.

  37. Ken April 11, 2011

i love me some janet and i cant wait for a new album! 😀

  38. B Lamont April 11, 2011

Love when the haters come out to bash Janet. Ur soooo pressed to downplay her, but I don’t see ur favs doing anything great! Clearly she could’ve done an arena tour. But ur just as dumb as u can be cuz you can’t do math. She’s done multiple nights in most of the cities she’s stopped, with people who didn’t get tickets upset that they missed the show. Let’s see umm Radio City holds 6,000, multiply that by 3 and that’s 8,000…same thing in othe venues like Santa Barbara, LA, Chicago not to mention the 4 cities she visited in Texas alone. Anyway, get it Janet!!!!!

  39. Chris April 11, 2011

Yall mad cause your favorite cant see Janet’s success? People keep talking oh she playing smaller venues. Well lets look at something, when your favorite plays bigger venues, they cant sell them out and they sell their tickets way cheaper. Janet’s tickets were mad expensive, sold out and she did not have to cancel anything! Go head Janet s*** on these kids!

  40. royalkev April 11, 2011

@ B Lamont & Chris – Thanks for breaking that down. Some of these people aren’t doing big arenas now that people are claiming have(no need to pinpoint who).

@ The man – I’m not sure if that last comment was for me or not, but the mention of Memoirs wasn’t to bash Mariah. I was just saying that Janet falls in line with a lot of her peers and gets much more flack for albums of her that didn’t even flop. It just appears that people seem to think her albums didn’t sell as well as they did.

JANET’S CONCERT IS SOOO AMAZING! SHE STILL “DANCES” HER ASS OFF! SHE MAY NOT HAVE STRONG VOCALS! BUT SHE SOUNDS SOOOOO DAMN GOOD ON THIS TOUR!

AMAZING TO SEE HER SOOOO CLOSE LIKE THAT! SHE ALSO DONE STADIUMS ON THIS TOUR AS WELL!.

JANET CANNOT WAIT FOR NEW ALBUM IN 2012!

  43. BitchIcantevenspellwelfare April 11, 2011

@ROYALKEV, yes!!!!!! Please tell these delusional people something.

    e.g. THIS brilliance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY7Qc_VMKmk

  44. AC April 11, 2011

The show is amazing. Janet still dances as though she is in her 20’s and continues to prove that she is one of the greatest entertainers to walk the face of the planet. And experiencing her show in smaller venues and theatres is incredible. There is not one bad seat in the house. It is also astounding that the show has no special effects, no props, no big explosions, no changing sets, and yet the show is still amazing and highly entertaining. That is the sign of a true performer. To all the haters, can your favorite do that – eliminate all special effects and distractions, have the audience’s attention focused only on the artist 100% of the time they’re onstage and still put on a great show? I doubt it. And even more importantly, will they be able to do that 15/20 years from now when they’re in their 40’s? I highly doubt it.

And to everyone who’s criticizing her for performing in smaller venues, I will reinforce what some people have already said. She may be performing in venues that only hold 5,000 people but she is also doing two and three nights in those same venues. Radio City Music Hall holds about 6,000 people. She performed there three nights, which means 18,000 tickets were sold for the New York shows altogether. She could’ve taken the easy route and did one night at Madison Square Garden and sold out the venue, but she’s choosing to perform in a more intimate setting so that she can get up close with her fans. That attests to the hard work that she puts into her shows and pleasing her fans. The same can be said for her shows in Chicago, LA, Vegas and San Francisco. And I have to mention that over 70,000 people attended her concert last month at RodeoHouston in Texas. She did the same thing back in July for the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. She did all this without releasing a new album, without support from a record label, and with little to no promotion.

The haters can keep on hating but it’s not slowing down this 44 year old woman any time soon.

  45. MJStanForLife April 11, 2011

Yassss the Queen! venues with 4,000 seats. 3 dates each. You do the math. These haters probably couldn’t even sell out their station wagon!

  46. Chaz April 11, 2011

I love how you guys put these haters in place. I don’t have to say much more, you guys already said a mouthful. Janet Jackson is back b******!!!

The Queen betta WORK! YES, Janet! Come back for Essence, too! 🙂

  56. I {heart} music! April 12, 2011

Some of these comments are hilarious! LOL

SMH……She is royalty that has been through hell and back and still is the classiest artist out! She is a self-made superstar and now a self-promoting DIVA! With just the mention of “Janet” and “tour” in the same sentence, people went and used up their rent money to see her. That’s the impact she has on ppl and that’s why she has inspired so many generations of people. And to note…..when you go to a JJ show, there are 6 years old, 12 year olds, 25 year olds, 30year olds, 50 year old, even 60-70- year olds there! That ALONE says ALOT! She is an artist who has learned how to listen to her fans.

And by doing that and giving herself 100% so far, the love has been received back to her in 10-fold which is why she continues to have to add dates on! LOL I mean she’s a goddess and there are some things, no matter what words may come out of ppl’s mouths or through the internet, that people have to realize they cant take away from you! You can’t take away her magic and her talent! Get over it and move on!

  57. Mariah4Life April 12, 2011

Janitor Jackson is playing my jewish friends brothers bar mitzvah this Saturday. Anybody want a ticket? Or 2. Hell, I can probably get you 3. Come on! It’s only $8. $5?

  58. Kim April 12, 2011

I can see that the 10 year olds are up past their bed time. Janet is an ICON and will always be. When its all said and done. When people mention Michael and Janet ony ICON will follow, not who? Which will be the response to a lot of these so call artist that you children are worshipping, so sad that you people will never know what a true entertainer is.

  59. IWC3_Prod April 12, 2011

So i read what some of you guys throwing shade at Janet for playing 3000-5000 seat venues. But in most cities she is playing 2-3 dates which mean she is really playing to 15000 people in some cases. Which is really an arena sized show. because an arena seats between 10000 and 15000 people. And as far as this being her LARGEST TOUR EVER, she doesn mean in size, she means in Dates. She is playing alot of countries and cities around the world that she has never played before. So Largest tour means locations not scale in this case. Just FYI.

  60. AC April 12, 2011

@MARIAH4LIFE…Let’s make a couple comparisons here:

    1) On her last tour Mariah Carey performed one night at Washington DC’s DAR Constitution Hall (which holds over 3,000) and sold 77% of available tickets. Last month Janet performed in the same venue for two nights and both shows were sold out.

    2) On the same tour Mariah performed one night at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre (which holds over 4,000) and sold 76% of available tickets. Last month Janet performed in the same venue for one night to a sold out crowd.

    3) Mariah performed two nights at Chicago’s Chicago Theatre (which holds nearly 4,000) and sold out both shows. Last month Janet performed in the same venue for three nights and sold out all three shows.

I could keep going but I won’t. I do like MC but you get my point…

  61. Mariah4Life April 12, 2011

    @AC

My post had nothing to do with Mariah, you silly buffoon, you. You just wasted your keystrokes typing all that crap. Keep up or shut up.

  62. Anon April 12, 2011

@Mariah4life your an idiot. None of janets tickets were discounted and her shows sold out! So much so, she is having a second leg in the US fool!

The reason there was a comparison to Mariah is because that’s what your tag stans for dummy! And if anybody’s tour would end in a bar mitzvah, it would have been Mariah’s last tour.

If you wanna shade Janet, people are gonna pull Mariah in because her name is your tagline numbnuts!

    I love Mimi and Janet.

But u are a moron. Kick rocks like the ones in your head……

  63. Anon April 12, 2011

And by the way Janet never had an album be cancelled. Nor has she had to sell a record on cable shopping networks.

So before you open your mouth, check what your fave has done lately.

    Thank you, your dismissed dipshit….

  64. X,Y, “and Z” April 12, 2011

Janet wouldn’t be anywhere if not for the last name “Jackson” and being Michael’s sister. Let’s be real. She has marginal talent, at best. Her mousy singing is a joke, her songs are corny and she herself has little in the way of personality. In 2011, the milk is past the point of being sour. But she has enough back catalog now to always be able to go out on these itty, bitty theater tours, playing to those few retained nostalgia fans who’re desperate to recapture their lost youth for one night through those old songs of hers.

    X,Y, “and Z”— OUT…!!

  65. Anon April 12, 2011

@ the idiot above me. It’s pretty obvious you don’t have much reading comprehension. Janets milk must be pretty fresh loOk at the reviews dummy.

Also, look @ the fact that she had to add a second leg to her tour wackjob.

Your funny clown. Go drink rhiannas h***** filled milk(who you Stan for) and buy one of riri’s 10 dollar tickets to her wack concert of no talent.

    Bye fool….

  66. AC April 12, 2011

@ANON…Thank you for clearing up that mess with the Mariah stan.

@XYZ….Your argument does not hold. People always try to say that Janet is only successful because of her last name, but let’s talk about Jermaine’s solo care, let’s talk about La Toya’s solo career, let’s talk about Rebbie’s solo career. They all have the last name Jackson, and none of their careers took off. So why did Janet’s??? Because she’s immensely talented, a musical genious and top notch performer.

I’m sorry if you grew up in a generation where mediocre music is topping the charts. It can cloud your mind from properly perceiving what real music and talent is.

Jermaine, Rebbie and LaToya didn’t have the luxury of having the last name AND Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis svengaling them hit songs too. Before them she was a flop and after them she’s a flop. They were the real talents behind her success and her last name got her in the door. Janet basically lucked out for that window of time she was popular, she never paid real dues. Maybe that’s why her career in the past 10 years has gone in the drain, the fates came along and took away what she didn’t really earn.

@ the dumb b**** above me

1st you can’t have success in music, films, publishing, etc. for 30 years on the strength of a family name crazy.

Next point, Latoya’s music and albums for years were written and produced by Michael dumbass! She was on his label!

Next point, Jimmy and Terry , even say Janet writes WITH them, she is not their creation, dummy! And, the only album she did without them wad disipline, and the critics as well as fans did not miss them. It was an awesome album( but being banned from radio affects sales dipshit!)

Next point, all the Jacksons have always had the chance and have worked with titans in the industry, with mixed results. Janet was the only one besides Michael to do the thing right! And you know it hater.

She is still winning, adding shows to her tour because she brings the talent, HO!

Your are a pressed loser, thats why you feel the need to send your b******* post 3 times loser.

    Stay pressed…. Bye b****
