She is one of the only artists who has been able to score high sales figures despite being in the era of ‘song leaks’ and illegal downloading.
Now, Lady GaGa has given her thoughts on what she feels is the real reason some artists struggle to shift commendable units.

On artists who blame piracy for low sales figures, she says:
“I believe it is whole heartedly the obligation of the artist to create a wonderful album that speaks to that generation through the digital era and through the challenges that we’ve been put up against.”
Going onto reveal:
“People that blame things on piracy and blame things on music being stolen- this is just an excuse. It’s an excuse for artists not creating through all of that.”
Whilst many a fan of ‘insert name commercially unsuccesful artist here’ may be rattled by these comments, Ms. Germanotta does have a valid point.
For she herself is an artist who has faced continous ‘leaks’ and ‘illegal downloading’ yet is still one of the highest selling artists in the world despite debuting just three years ago.
Even embarking on two record breaking tours in the space of two years whilst some of her contemporaries continue to serve as opening acts even after countless albums and support from well meaning fans.
She is just one artist in a long list of performers which include Beyonce, Drake, Adele, Kanye West ,Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears and Chris Brown who have managed to chart with impressive figures even when faced with the tiresome issue of music piracy.
Whilst some fan bases also choose to blame lack of label support for the shortcomings of their favourite artists, it is worth remembering that there is ultimately nothing a label can do if these fans know an artist has an LP out but choose not to buy it.
Perhaps GaGa’s comments will inspire the marketing managers of struggling artists to find new and inventive ways to persuade music lovers to invest in their artists.
For it is becoming increasingly obvious that it is the artists who embrace their fans the most, are the ones that have the most to smile about when the sales figures roll in.

Her sales has dropped drastically. 3 years in this crazy music business is not enough to boast. Britney had a great start too. People always jump on what’s new. Anyway, of course the leaks are what definitely made the sales drop, it´s been like that for years now, except for 2011, first year since I don´t know when in which sales have increased (only 1%). But they are still really low. Only 2 or 3 albums per year become big sellers now. And of course those are albums in which the artists put their soul, like Gaga said. This year´s example: Adele and Gaga
Label support is so important too. Specially when you´ve been in the game for longer and are a veteran and it´s more difficult to stay relevant. I mean, the cash labels waste on Rihanna, Britney and some others should go to promote true artists and legends who keep making great music
It’s a combination of all three: the artist, label and fans, that contribute to the success of an album. The artist has to create great material and make sure everyone is doing their job, the label is responsible for promotion, radio play and making sure people know the album is out, also single choices which is also important, and the fans should be buying the album and not downloading, and also an artist may not get album sales because people do not think they are good enough when they are not #1 and do not even listen because they’re like “Frank Ocean, who’s he? Not going to listen to him then”, when these artists are actually more talented than say Katy Perry or Kesha.
Therefore, it could be anyone who is to blame for poor album sales. The label is to blame if the album is not being promoted enough, the fans if they are illegally downloading instead of buying and the artist if the album is poor quality, or it could be a combination of all three.

This is exactly what I don’t like about this arrogant snob! It is mainly the label’s fault for not supporting their artist when a project isn’t received well. She makes it seem as if every artist that flops doesn’t have creative music. Lady Gaga gets the luxury of having one backing her with promotional campaigns that have started since New years’ eve, for an album with a May release date. Of course she would benefit more than the average artist in today’s low music climate . Promotion is Key and most people that continually hear that an album is brillant, start believing it. It’s all about marketing! It’s funny how an artist with the least amount of opposition and obstacles to contend with feel compelled to speak out on the topic. Amazon pitched in and picked up the slack(in taking a financial loss) just to sell Gaga’s BTW album for .99, yet still award her to gain royalties for those purcases at a rate of it selling at full price. This is a much different situation than an artist, say like – Ciara, who doesn’t have a label shipping enough cd’s in stores where she would have her highest consumer interest. Your management & label support is crucial and it’s make or break in these times we live in. I don’t think that an artist whose shoved down our throats from Glee to Idol, that have a label shipping her cd’s in stores like ‘Staples’ and even women clothing stores like ‘Dots’ is in any position to speak from this perspective.

There needs to be an overhaul in the record industry. The record companies, media and stans (sorry) browbeat the same artists down our throats every day. Producers browbeat the same beats and autotune. It all became about a quick buck and accepting mediocrity for it. Gaga is lucky because she has excellent promoters, record company backs her up, and a strong fanbase. That’s why her sales are so strong. There’s so many artists that are not getting that type of back up unfairly. The music execs are so blinded by greed and trends. This isn’t anything new. It’s just got worse the past few yrs. @ Kat Deluna Fan, I do think it would be interesting to see Gaga take breaks in between her music and start from scratch when she has a “new era”. You can’t tell them apart because there’s not any musical growth with any of them and these era’s are walking, one right into the other. So many of the greats (Whitney, MJ, Janet, Prince) didn’t drown their fans with new music every 10months. The only 1 that did and still manage to have an impressive discography was Mariah. There aren’t too many artist of her caliber around today! Gaga has been trying to be shady to so many artist since her arrival, 3 short years ago. She need to stop worrying about lip syncing artist, artist that can’t sell, etc and focus on her own artistry. If she doesn’t have longevity what would have been the point of it all. Being promoted in the biggest way possible is critical to the artist but of course you can’t force consumers to buy what they don’t want. But if you have a strong fan base and a weak album (like beyonce) promoting usually isn’t that vital.
I agree with Lady Gaga. Put out an album where your singing about something people want to hear and they will buy it. A lot of artists are singing about nothing these days. It’s all about who produced them, and what the music or the beat is like. A lot of artists are still selling despite music piracy. If they really like the album, they’re going to buy it. But when you have 3 songs out of 14 on an album that’s good, then don’t get mad when consumers don’t buy. To me that’s a waste.

As for that question about who is to blame if a CD fails to sell…ummm, I think it is an issue for all involved. The ARTIST must produce a quality product for his/her fans and build a connection with their fans (e.g. TeamBreeezy, GagaMonsters, NMBarbiez, RihannaNavy etc). The FANS must go out and support the singles/CDs that an artist produces. The ARTIST cannot do it alone. Lastly, the RECORD LABEL has got to step up and promote that artist!! We are now in this new era of the “360 Degree Contracts” where if you sign the Label bares all responsibility and reaps all the reward for an artist’s success! This is something rarely discussed in the industry!
I don’t agree with GAGA statement nor TGJ at all. GAGA is selling now bcuz she’s hot. Just like britney and beyonce where when they were the “it” girls. GAGA albums are not masterpieces of art, their the same pop music songs everyone sings, so for her to say to create art that’s worth buying, she needs to get back to the drawing board and do that. I understand how people feel about her comments, she talks too much sometimes…but she is spilling true tea. I watched this interview of hers on “Fuse” and she talked about her struggle and how she basically had to do it all on her own, so I understand where shes coming from somewhat. I think shes kinda saying “I can do it, so why can’t you…?” because she feels that she has struggled, been dropped/ignored everytime she attempted making music until now. BUT I do think she can be a little cocky, as well as special. The first time I heard her new video was gonna premiere on American Idol, I knew she had too much power because the MEDIA gives it to her. They pull strings for her (MTV, Magazines, Award Shows etc..) they give her alot of power.
Personally I think it’s a matter of everything. From music to image to style to personality to connections to the plain “shock” factor. Rihanna can’t REALLY be singled out with GaGa because although her label gives alot into her, there was a type when the public wasn’t feeling her (Rated R era, lets not get into it…) and for whatever reason her fame and etc started going down until she changed (Once Again) her image and music to give people what they wanted… (LOUD era).
Basically it’s a mix of everything in one. Just because your labels giving you everything on a silver spoon, and they’re really into you DOES NOT mean the public will as well. Unfortunatley in this industry you gotta have the “It” factor. I think when it comes to the “bigger talent” etc like Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Rowland, Marsha Ambrosius I believe it’s simply a matter of support and interest. You can only hear a powerful love with a beautiful woman behind it so many times until it just gets boring and you want something new… (i.E Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady GaGa…) . Ok im done. 🙂 #truTEAtho

Leaks is very much the problem and the lack of fan and label support. The music industry is such a joke right now. I mean when u have Gaga and Rihanna running the charts, i mean come on. Gaga, I don’t think the problem is the artist an their creativity. They won’t make music for people, they make music to express themselves as you said (tell stories…). If people don’t get it, yes, they won’t buy it. You are successful ’cause first you created great music people could dance to, now that you are recognized you create even better music people can relate to a lot but also because you have a lot of support from your label and you are everywhere doing promo. I know you’re thankful for all of this, but artists is are going to compromise themselves to adapt to what the general public thinks or to be shocking and be on everyone’s mouth. They are going to make the music they love and they won’t give a damn if the general public doesn’t like it. I’ve seen you going the artistic and genuine way so far (that’s why I’m a fan), but if you’re going to start making music to be likable to you monsters and be a puppet lip-sycn machine of the industry then people (even some monsters) won’t like it.
You can dress all the crazy stuff you want but we ALL know your music and passion speaks louder then that, please, keep it that way always.

I think Gaga is right in saying an artist needs to give fans what they want but to act as if label support isn’t crucial is lunacy. It is definitely a combo of factors that allow an artist to succeed . People are saying Adeles success is pushback from the autotuned pop that has rules the charts and airwaves , maybe it is maybe it isn’t.
Right now Gaga has the luck of full on label support. Label support can even determine where artists CDs are places in a store, that’s how much they factor in. Fans clearly are the ones that make a huge difference. Not every ” fan” is a hardcore fan that will buy Everything an artist puts out, some only buy if they like the music.
I will be interested in how some artists will do when the label support is lessened? In this Internet age it should be easier for an artist to maintain some contact with fans but good luck on promotion and distribution. Labels allow for MASSIVE promo and distribution and that’s crucial for a chance at success. In 5 years will we be discussing any of the artist we currently are?
No one is jealous because of Gaga’s success, but I don’t think Gaga is successful because she’s talented anymore. It’s because she’s now an entity, a company and franchaise with it’s own slogan. “Paws Up Little Monsters!” and devoted folowers. The POPmusic she’s putting out isn’t up to muster and rather than transcend has fallen into an 80’s pit and jerked around. Worse yet I think while she was once different without being ridiculous I think she now merely hides behind the costumes and crap never having to be challenged for Stefani or expose herself.
Monica is a good example of an artist that broke the barriers of leaked albums and songs and still sold mainly because she had a tv show that showcased her talent in creating music and she touched people and inspired a lot of artist that fell off.

Fans have always bought unsuccessful albums, esp by the biggest artists: Mariah, Janet, Madonna, etc. Those ho’s flopped with GOLD status while others smash albums barely go PLATINUM. It is almost always the label mishandling the promotion and pressuring the artist to change strategies mid promotion, change singles, do this don’t do that and it often ends up being a mistake. IMO opinion Lady Gaga has been so successful because she doesn’t let the Label control her. She puts out the singles she wants, the album cover she wants, and she tweets what she wants. She has a lot of power… partly because i don’t think the Label even knows what to do with her. Also, an artist can have the most wonderful music ever, but if they do not have enough promotion the right places at the right time. Many of those who have successful careers had to use the DIY formula.
The perfect example is Jennifer Lopez who started from scratch in her t*** years. She didn’t have mom and dad by her side, no family & friend guidance/protection, nothing. She made it all alone, which explains the strong woman she is now.
Therefore she owns her success to HER and HERSELF only.
What many said above also explains why Kate DeLuna or Kelly Rowland are where they are today. Well somehow it makes sense, especially when you also see the kind of support and promotion they get.

I totally agree. There are a lot of reasons why records sell so poorly. One of the biggest reasons (which never gets discussed) is Clear Channel Radio’s hijacking of Top 40 radio. This has led to a total stifling of new music genres and styles and the result is that we’ve heard nothing but ignorant ghetto thugs on the radio for 10+ years and your cliche, 1-named, female pop star types, all of which seem the same. In the late 90s, we had an explosion of t*** pop (which occurs every 7 or so years), rock/rap fusion and techno pop taking off. These genres would last a few years and new styles and artists would take their place. At one time Top 40 radio encompassed it all. That’s not the case anymore. We now have corporate entertainers who get deals with American Idol and a couple months later their singles are suddenly on the radio. Everything feels planned and there is no longer any originality at Top 40. Why would the general public promote mainstream artists who all seem the same with styles that have been around for now well over a generation?
She’s right that blaming music piracy alone for an album flopping is an excuse that won’t fly, but I disagree that creating great music is a preventative measure for that. For starters, what is constitutes as quality music is highly subjective. There are loads of people who don’t consider Katy Perry, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, etc. great music. And they’re highly successful. I wonder what she has to say about them. Hell, there are people who don’t consider Gaga’s music to be all that. And there are artists who make undeniably fantastic music, and aren’t even well-known. Like Janelle Monáe. She’s signed to a major label, and no one can accuse her of being lazy when it comes to promoting her work, why isn’t she huge right now? Not even word-of-mouth is giving her the level.of exposure that she deserves.
Honestly, I believe that at the end of the day, luck plays the biggest factor in one’s success, regardless of your level talent, quality of music, amount of promotion you get or even work drive. Seriously, you can be the puppet whose level of involvement in your music amounts to absolutely nothing more than showing up at the studio, sing some songs with no input and then leave, you may still be inexplicably massively successful (I mean, look at Britney for example).

Gaga promoted the hell out of Born This Way, she still promoted The Fame and The Fame Monster months and months after they were released which is why they all sold and still are selling well. The Fame is still in the Top 50 on the Billboard charts after nearly 3 years and The Fame Monster is still in Top 100 and Born This Way is still in the top 10. Chris Brown promoted the hell out of F.A.M.E. and it’s only sold 800K WW, Keri Hilson promoted the hell out of No Boys Allowed and it’s only sold 400K WW, with certain artists, their music may stop connecting with their fans if it remains stagnant. Rihanna’s albums will always sell well because she’s changes her sound and image with every album and so does Gaga. Britney changed her sound with every album so her album sales remained high because she was different. Ciara’s album sales dropped because she remained stagnant and plain, Christina began trying to hard and Usher just trend hopped. Look at P!nk. P!nk changed her sound, image and style with every album. So her sales always increased. People need to stop blaming the labels as the only reason the artists don’t sell. Now some artists like Ciara, Ne-Yo and Brandy do lose label support, but they remained stagnant and just expected the labels to solve their problems. In the music industry, you have to be a f****** beast of you want to survive. Look at Janet. She proved she wasn’t just another Jackson trying to sing and that drive and determination led her to create 4 of the greatest albums of all time with Control, Rhythm Nation, Janet., and The Velvet Rope. Gaga’s album are always well received because she takes risks with her music. She addresses topics such as feminism, homophobia, immigration laws, social injustice and individual expression in her music so she always reinvents herself.

The label overall in most cases is to blame. They don’t back the artist or really care about many artists unless they are big money makers (Beyonce, Gaga) . Very rarely you see an actual relationship where the label cares about the artist, Only Whitney and Clive come to mind. But look what hapend when L. A. Reid took over Arista back in ’01, her album at that time didn’t do too well because he focused on younger acts, but she was back on top when Clive came back (and when she got clean).
Any one else would have dropped Whitney back in the mid-00s when she was at rock bottom, but Clive stayed and cared for her since the beginning and they had a #1 album ” I Look To You” when she came back. . It should be like that with many artists, but sadly, it isn’t.
