From The Vault this week pays tribute to Ciara‘s 2005 summer sizzler ‘Oh’. The gritty cut was released as the 3rd single from her Platinum selling debut, ‘Goodies’. Featuring a verse from Hip-Hop titan Ludacris, the release peaked at #2 on the Billboard 100 and was yet another international hit for the singer.
Riding high on the wave that was Crunk-R&B back then, the Dre & Vidal produced cut served as Ci’s homage to her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. While having a darker tone than previous singles ‘Goodies’ and ‘1,2 Step’, ‘Oh’ maintained a crossover appeal and radio-friendliness that allowed it to perform as well as its predecessors on the charts.
From the elaborate choreograpgy to the overall swag and attitude displayed, the single’s accompanying video further cemented CiCi’s status as the most visually exciting emerging artist in town.
Here at TGJ HQ, we can’t help but feel like the world hasn’t seen the best of Super C yet. Something which could very well change now that her rough spell (see: Fantasy Ride, Basic Instinct) is seemingly behind her and the comeback narrative is falling into place. Let’s only hope that her collaboration with her Epic knight in shining armour, L.A Reid, yields fruitful rewards. After all, he is responsible for Mariah‘s 00’s comeback and Rihanna‘s (successful) joke of a career; yet also bares the load of mishandling of Janet‘s 2008 under-performer ‘Discipline’. For Ms. Harris’ sake, their reunion (he launched her career) needs to translate into critical and commercial acclaim and of course more hits. Hopefully this new venture will also allow Ms. Harris to expand her creative vision through big-budget videos and worldwide tours. She’s too talented to still be so ‘local’. She’s a global star in-waiting.

‘Oh’ was hot! No one can’t deny that Ciara was the 2004’s Queen. All her singles were good and popular, her debut album was selling pretty well, she was invited to perform on big shows and awards, etc. The first thing that killed Ciara’s career was the fact that crunk-n-b died pretty fast. The way it came, it went. Crunk was huge in 2004, but it barely lasted a year.
‘Revolution’ is my favorite Cici’s album. ‘Promise’ and ‘Like A Boy’ were huge and great! ‘That’s Right’ was my jam.
The last thing that killed Ciara’s career was that her team tried to sell her like a global superstar. It didn’t work out. “Love, S**, Magic” was a big hit, but she should thanks Justin Timberlake because without him she wouldn’t have this hit.
Ciara lost the connection she had with her fans. She needs to find herself again before recording new songs.

Maybe single choices had something to do with it, but I don’t agree with Jive’s so called lack of promo. Ciara obviously had a huge budget for “Go Girl” and she got to record with Justin Timberlake for “Love S** Magic.” Evolution was multiplatinum and FR went gold (if that), and it wasn’t because people didn’t know that the album was in stores. She might not have attracted many, if any, new fans with FR, but the overwhelming majority of the old fans that bought her first two albums didn’t buy FR.
Beyonce is the Queen Of Dance. hands down. Fantasy Ride was BANGING album.. buy Beyonce’s I Am…Sasha Fierce was a Relevance KILLER it completely outshined everyone at the time… so Ciara had no chance. Go Girl was a female anthem with a banging ass video.. but Single Ladies dropped the same day.
I feel as tho people just dont want to support ciara anymore out of laziness or lack of interest. some people feel that Ciara has done it all. nothing she can do now will impress them. and she does not have the best vocals but on the majority of the billboard charts are filled with Gimmicks and Fake Entertainers. so if u ask me. i think Ciara needs to go back to the formula that made her INTERESTING and HOT in the 1st place. but i feel shes gone too hollywood now, that if she tried to go back to being STREET it would just look fake. I think all three women Bey, Ri, Ci have their own lanes. It’s not that Ciara is somehow indistinguishable from the rest. Ciara has her own brand that built around dancing, her toned physique, being a crunk princess, etc., etc.. FR was a departure from her original sound, and BI was an attempt to return back to that, but BI sold worse than FR. Like others have said before me, the question is whether or not, there’s still enough interest in her lane and brand to motivate people to buy her albums.

People keep saying that she should go back to this sound, but this is when the whole ‘r&b crunk’/ style was still hot, that sound is played out now. I do think she needs to find a new approach and possibly try to capture that old magic but I just can’t see her having much success if she goes back to that ‘crunk’ sound.
Maybe signing with Epic is a step in the right direction, but it’s gonna take more than a new label to jumpstart her comeback I would love to see her work with Timbaland & Missy, especially since she is so close to Missy. She is an established enough artist to work with big name producers and maybe they can give her some hit s***. I think she should stay away from ballads and such though and focus on dance tracks.
I’m skeptical about her ‘comeback’ but I wish her luck.
