Jennifer Hudson Reveals She Was Originally Offered Role of ‘Precious’

Published: Wednesday 21st Dec 2011 by Rashad

‘Spotlight’ singer Jennifer Hudson shot to fame seemingly overnight with her acclaimed performance in 2006’s ‘Dreamgirls’ as Effie.  The role, the career-defining moment in the American Idol alum’s stint in entertainment, later led her to the Academy Award stage to accept the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ in 2007.  Interestingly, as Hudson’s new memoir ‘I Got This:  How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down’ details, the songstress was almost the center of another acclaimed, Oscar nominated film – 2009’s ‘Precious’.

The role, eventually landed by actress Gabourey Sidibe, may have won its leading lady a nomination for Best Actress at the following year’s Academy Awards, but Hudson says she was unwilling to pack on the pounds for the portrayal.  Speaking on the offer, J.Hud says:

““I had done that with Effie… and as much as I was moved by this film,” she said. “I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight.””

Despite the missed opportunity, Hudson hasn’t looked back and continued with the other movie and music ventures that shortly followed.  Fans can read more on this and find out what other gems Jennifer sheds light on in her new memoir, due January 10. (source)

LMAAAAOOOOOO… Jennifer Hudson would have been too fierce for the role. And just like Gabby, people would have been calling her Precious instead of JHud/ Jennifer Hudson.

Great she declined the offer. Lmaaaooo.

As much as I love her voice and her role in dreamgirls, I dont think she’s a good actress. And I don’t think she could have did that role….

Thank God she didn’t accept the role. Precious was made for Gabourey Sidibe. She was just perfect . What about her role for Winnie Mandela?

I’m glad she let it go. Her popularity in Hollywood would have ruined the “indie spirit” of the movie.

    Gabby is our Precious.

JHud can act worth s***. She got the oscar for her singing ability not acting. Eddie Murphy DID deserve the damn supporting oscar for Dream Girls. His performance was nothing you see him do before. It was terrific! Compare his character development to Jhud in the movie and it’s night and day. Jhud was basically playing herself whilst Eddie was someone 100% different. She’s getting cocky and arrogant since her weight loss. Gabby was the better actress anyway. Wow, can Jhud dream some more. I dont see her career lasting very long quite frankly… music is failing and not really selling at all and her flicks since Dream Girls have epic failed. Her lame fake south african accent in Winnie is pathetic. Like a poor tv movie. Ugh…

She still look like a skinny Precious!

She sounds ignorant. Precious was not really about weight at all. Yes, the character was overweight, but it wasn’t a major factor in the story. I’m really not a fan of Jennifer. Her music is forgettable and she has become quite arrogant. I’m glad she’s healthier, but something about her has changed.
