Granted there was always going to be debate aplenty, We literally “can’t” at Rihanna being nominated for Best Choreography. That’s an oxymoron.
The reality is that it’s her directors should win Lifetime Achievement gongs for the work they put in to make it look like she putting in any herself!
Yes, she earns 3 gold stars for trying in the ‘Where Have You Been’ clip, yet just like ‘Rude Boy’ – the video is little more than frilly outfits and clever edits.

Rihanna had better snatch everything with ‘WFL’ and ‘WHYB’. Love her or loathe her, these 2 are her best videos. She doesn’t deserve to win ‘Best Choreo’, though. Chris Brown’s ‘TUTM’ was better, no shade.
Lana Del Rey deserved more nominations, but her label is not really promoting her in the States, so no surprises there.
M.I.A. went from being ignored to getting 3 nominations for a song that wasn’t even a hit. That’s a sign that she’s on ROC now
Madonna was totally snubbed, but so was GaGa’s ‘Marry The Night’. Interesting…
Aside from that, I CANNOT wait for the performances!!

I’m really happy for the Throne and for King B for their nominations, they deserve to win.
Video of the Year again is messed up with Katy Perry being nominated again… for what? A video where she walks around in a forest and a hospital… does it even mean anything, just cause she uses a lot of effects, it doesn’t mean that she should be nominated for this award…
And Rihanna being nominated for this award, this annoys me as well, her video doesn’t exactly scream “positive message” to young girls, and because MTV are always going on about being safe and stuff, I’m kinda disappointed that this video was nominated. Her being nominated for the best choreo is bullshit, she can’t dance and there have been other better choreographed videos than WHYB, it seems as through she has been nominated for something because this is her first and best attempt at dancing.
Now Take Care, I don’t understand why there is this massive hype around this video, I guess the cinematography and the art direction is pretty good, but all Drake and Rihanna do in this video is hug and stand around… I realise that this may sound arrogant but I don’t think the video is worthy for a Video of the Year nod. Didn’t MTV also write an open letter to Drake about how derogatory his video for HYFR was? And now they’re nominating that same video for best Hip-Hop video!
Gaga’s snub is annoying me as well as she had worked her ass off for the You & I and the Marry the Night videos, and the latter had her damn life story in it, it was a really important video, she could have been nominated for either of those videos in any category (apart from best Male), but MTV decided to snub her. This is the second year that they’ve done this just for Katy Perry and RIhanna and frankly what MTV are doing is obvious and nonsensical.
It annoys me that when an artist such as Katy Perry or Rihanna has had a good year, they will automatically be highly nominated and because they are basically the most popular artists in the Video of the Year category, there’s no doubt that either of them will win it. And this is further seen with Justin Bieber being nominated for Boyfriend, firstly he is obviously gonna win it again because he has in the past and secondly I don’t understand what has been done in that video that hasn’t already been done before. Another example of this is Chris Brown with TUTM, he’s just dancing around in a club.
I don’t understand why Kelly Clarkson was nominated for Best Video with a Message for Dark Side and not S (WDKY). the former is so dull and boring and I swear it’s the same concept been done before with Avril Lavigne, the latter is so much more exciting and original with a great message.
I appreciate the nods to fun. & Janelle Monáe, Coldplay, Gotye, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Calvin Harris, M.I.A. and ADELE – Nice to know they are having some difference in the show but it does seem like they included Lana & Frank for buzz perhaps.
Carly Rae Jepsen, Selena & The Scene, One Direction and The Wanted nominations disappoint me, they are not award show worthy videos.
With Nicki Minaj, her Starships video had effort put into it and it was pretty fun, so I understand the nods to that but the Beez in the Trap video was some half-hearted stuff with her just slutting herself around, so I fail to understand that nomination.

The video’s concept shows Rihanna travelling around various locations “looking for a male partner who will please her”. The video begins with a shot of flowing water which appears to be set in a dark swamp-like area. Rihanna’s head is then shown hovering above the water as she begins the first verse. She is then presented as a reptilian creature as part of her back is lifted above the water. Rihanna then exits the water, showing a scale ensemble, much like a reptile, which covers her breasts. As the bridge begins, a close up of Rihanna’s face is shown, half covered in a shawl, identical to the single cover. Choreography then begins as the singer is shown with a group of male dancers behind her, wearing tribal costumes in what appears to be an Egyptian desert. Rihanna dons a zebra-print outfit with oversized red trousers as she puts on a fast-paced routine against the backdrop of pyramids. Empty tree branches are shown, as well as a fire and a starry sky. Scenes of a nude Rihanna are intercut, holding a whip made of hair, while similtaneously covering her breasts.
As the second verse begins, the singer is seen in an African hut lying on the floor, surrounded by female dancers. She performs on the floor, in one moment managing to put her leg over her head, before standing up and again, performing a dance routine. The performers are seen to make the shape of an eye, with Rihanna in the centre as the pupil. In this scene she wears a black lace ensemble with a new wild curly hairstyle. This is followed with the singer laying in a large birds’ nest and then goes back to the singer with her previous wild hairstyle, performing a complex dance routine with female dancers, this time with fluorescent green effects. The penultimate scene shows Rihanna in a long dress which lights up neon red, while the singer has sequins across her face. She then appears to channel Hindu god Shiva as multiple arms surround her body. In the final scene, Rihanna and her male background dancers seen previously, slowly descend back underwater into the swamp; Rihanna’s head completely submerges below the water

Actually, no, if you read by comment PROPERLY, you will see that I do not think that no one should ever win a VMA, even from the first VMAs.
You are extremely uneducated and you’re trying to be clever, twisting my words into something that they were not and are not.
You are talking about the Otis SONG, when this is a award show that is focused on the VIDEO, therefore your argument is flawed as the quality of the song, which I actually like, a lot, does not account for when deciding whether this video should win an award or not.
And in the defence of the video itself, it is actually a good video because it represents what Hip hop is, it is not supposed to be highly imaginative, there is a reason why it is like that, it’s almost making fun of how Hip hop is, that is why it is clever.
It is obvious that Chris Brown had not put much thought into that video, if he did direct it himself, I will give credit to the choreo, as it was quite extensive but he dances in a club and flirts with women in a club, I’m sorry but hasn’t that been done before – Trey Songz, Usher? I actually like the song, and the video is decent but I don’t think it’s VMA worthy, I personally think it’s because MTV wants to cause some buzz by getting him and Rihanna together.

That was a whole load of shit. Rihanna skipped the A.M.A’S People’s choice and almost ever other show this year. She went to the Brits and A.M.A’S Because she wasnt busy at the time.

first off when wfl dropped everyone and their mother was saying how good the video was, and how it deserved a nomination for video of the year, well it did now you all are bitching? really now. also whyb for choreography makes sense she did her thing, was it some ciara or beyonce type choreography? no it was rihanna, and it was a great video. only haters trying to critic her on every thing doesn’t think she should be nominated.
also gaga wasnt snubbed she only released one video that was eligible for this years vmas, marry the night. sometimes they get nominated sometimes not. also beys countdown was better than love on top, but because love on top charted higher it got the nomination. people should know by now these nominations go by chart position and impact of the video, whether people like it or not these videos made some type of buzz, and got some recognition.
ps take care was nominated more for its artistry, the symbolism of the bull, fish, and bird, which is drake, rihanna and chris. mtv got the message which is why its nominated, still admitedly a boring video though.

there is a big reason why motivation is not nominated!!!!!!! the music video dropped in april of last year, its eligability period is way over. also the video is good, but its all grinding, not really any choreography, whyb may not be the best in the dance area but she does more than just grind. no shade to kelly though.
almost forgot about you and i music video, which is actually my personal favorite gaga video, i dont know why that isnt nominated? i think they should replace take care with you and i but, alot of videos have been snubbed over the years.

Ah cmon dont u think countdown has a shot at best editing? It was neatly done besides look at her competition *coy smile*. However i dont want her to perform either. I’ll wait till next year after she’s begun a new era. A live premiere at the grammys 2013 – that i would love. If Gaga & Katy can have that advantage so can Bey.

I’m glad Bey’s Countdown is getting acknowledged. I’ve been seeing that chereo in so many videos following behind it. Bey deserves some recognition (of course it would only be controversial only when Bey does those moves). Anyway, Love On Top was another great visual. Glad to see honey Bee getting nods for the right songs.
Overall the nominees are a bit repetitive. Some lack luster videos have been selected as usual. That’s nothing new. Frank Ocean is being thrown in for hype, but it’s refreshing to see a few interesting people listed. You just can’t get too mad about talent being noticed. I’m more excited about seeing Alicia Keys perform than this list though. I don’t expect much from the VMA’s.
I think the list of winners will probably look like this:

Most of these nominations are really ridiculous.
The VMA’s are nothing but a populairty contest. This award show does not stay true to it’s name, I thought this was supposed to be about the best VIDEO out this year, not about the best SONG that stayed on the charts the longest.
Ridiculous, I won’t be watching this year.

I think We Found Love deserves the Video Of The Year. It’s her best video to date.
I’m happy that Gaga didn’t get any nomination this time. I love her, but her BTW era’s videos suck! It is sad to see that there isn’t any Best R&B Video category.

Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Visual Effects are technical awards. In other words, they don’t go to the singer, they go to the director of the music video. Best Choreography goes to the choreographer.

I am HELLA PISSED that there isnt an R&B category – Last time I checked there are currently R&B artists out there (Beyonce, Trey Songz, Kelly Rowland, Usher (to an extent)). I want to make predictions but it really is unpredictable on a lot of the categories since fans get to vote

And finally.She dated jayz for 6 YEARS before marrying him then 4 YEARS to have his child.: okay I’m finished c how good I….boasted! ( that’s the word) bout b n didn’t downgrade any other artists. Honestly, Lana Del Rey has the best videos of the year, her videos have atmosphere. Rihanna’s “We Found Love” is also one of the best videos of the past 2 years, Lady Gaga Attempts to become her videos in the best of all times has disappointed a lots, i mean why make a 13 minutes video who makes no sense at all, boring video, my fav. video from Born This Way was “The Edge of Glory”, to some a bad video, to me just beautiful, simple, just her looking gorgeous. You don’t have to make a 13 minutes video just to make people believe your videos are the best, Michael Jackson was a pioneer and his videos were good, you enjoy every part of it but her videos just not, for example Madonna’s video “Bedtime Story” is one of the best videos ever and the video begins with music and ends with music., if you know what i mean, Beyonce’s “Countdown” is just another copy, the video should have been nominated in a new category “Stolen video of the year”. I can understand why The Queen of Pop didn’t have a nomination this year because her only good video this era is “Girl Gone Wild”, i’m ok with that but Beyonce “Love on Top” are you kidding me, low budget video with a supposed pregnant women.
