Mariah Carey Readies R&B Revival With New Album

Mariah Carey Triumphant

She’s back! As one of the industry’s longest reigning divas, it’s only fitting that Mariah Carey‘s return to the charts is worked like an “event”.

Hence, so as to celebrate the debut of her new single ‘Triumphant’ today, the singer’s label Island Def Jam assembled premium press for an exclusive Q&A with the songbird herself.

That Grape Juice were fortunate enough to be on the call, which saw the 42 year old dish on her forthcoming new album. Find out what she had to say below…

On R&B she explained:

It would be incredible if we could bring that days when R&B records didn’t have to crossover and just be hits on their own.I remember back when those records were the soundtracks of people’s lives.

I remember when I was pregnant with dem babies they only responded to the songs with the classic R&B feel.

However, in an attempt not to offend her Pop counterparts, she added:

It  just makes me sad that there are so many great R&B artists out there that don’t get the chances that they should.

Additionally, the icon also welcomed the possibility of collaborating with both Drake and Frank Ocean, revealing how excited she was to work with ‘industry shapers’ such as Meek Mill who lends a verse to ‘Triumphant‘.

Although the hotly anticipated set has yet to be christened with a title, she did reveal that she has over 100 songs recorded to cherry-pick from and that Epic mastermind LA Reid will assume a poignant role in its creative direction.

With many trying but failing to breathe life into the genre, if anyone has the power (on paper) to do so it is Mariah.

Here’s hoping the project sees her make her biggest mark to date and kick the door wide open for future generations of R&B crooners.

She isn’t going to help revive R&B music by putting out sub-par material. There are artists out there such as Jazmine Sullivan, Maxwell, Elle Varner, etc. who are proving themselves to be extremely more capable than current day Mariah Carey. I’m not saying that she doesn’t have the star power to make it happen but the music has to be worthy as well. And if she just releases poor material then it could actually do the genre more harm than good.

Oh yeah??? And have those you mentioned made it? Shut up

      • Not Impressed August 3, 2012

Oooh, someone got their thin stan skin pinched. LOL

Hey JohnVidal, Mariah Carey sucks ass and has become a clown with time. She was never all that great to begin with, now she’s just a cartoon.

        You mad? Good. 😉

        @not impressed

Well the 1st single was ok simply bc she barely was on it. It was more of a collaborated than her song at best since meek n rr. I hope the best for her though, but wasn’t her last few albums rnb anyways? Most of the songs were rnb/pop at best being consider pop. Hopefully for X Factor winner, Melonie Amaro doesn’t get over shadowedby MC since they r both on the same label. Anyways that’s good she is going to focus on rnb n not trying to get a simple 19th #1single off a dance song

RnB – Rhythm & Blues – Beat & Soul. If she brings that and brings it hard she can do it. Bring rnb back!!!

    Queen Mariah!
I don´t want LA Reid to make many decisions though. He was responsible for Migrate not being second single after Touch my body (which was going to be her 19th #1 for sure, it was the perfect song for that moment, and Mariah wanted it) and he also wanted her to work with The Dream for the ENTIRE Memoirs album, and that was too much

    • Virtuoso Intellect August 3, 2012

Damn till this day. I keep pondering why that song was not a single. Another EOT that got away

    • ThéLourson August 3, 2012

LA Reid definitely should not make decisions for Mariah… I 100% cosign!!!

    YAWN, gril bye.

Of couse she wants to collaborate with Frank Ocean….LOL. The gimmicks ppl will use these days. I wonder had he not recently told the world he’s been “foolin’ women” *Khia voice* & was not so well received by the white gay-oriented media, the racist progressive majority, and groups like GLAAD, would she be so eager to collaborate with him?…LOL 🙂

    • JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) August 3, 2012

Relax she didn´t even mentioned Frank (or Drake) they asked her and she really said nothing about it. By the way such a great talent like Frank would be good working with Mariah

    • truth tea August 3, 2012

you cannot talk about gimmicks and publicity stunts when you stan for chris brown, the queen of controversy stunts.

      • MC August 3, 2012

        lol

  7. Casual August 3, 2012

I like Mariah Carey, but . . . 100 songs and she puts out Triumphant?

    • ThéLourson August 3, 2012

You are aware she’s not the only one making decisions, arent you?

    • andyd August 4, 2012

i agree. not the best for me. i still love it tho. triumphant remix is dope. i wish more of her was on the single. its no number 1.

  8. mobwife August 3, 2012

LOL, what are folks blathering on about? I heard the new CD snippets! Was that just for show or are those songs from her upcoming CD? So MC is going to do what no one allowed Beyonce’s ‘4’ and are now actively working against Chris Brown’s’ Fortune’ to do and that’s represent R&B music as R&B artists? Should you listen to both CDs, you would discover they both are R&B centered not Pop or Dance music as the bullsh** media has said!

Well, good luck with that Mariah! Sure, based on name recognition and new post as an AI judge, that should generate some interests but I doubt if she sells as many copies based on the songs I heard from her CD snippets, as Beyonce’s ‘4’. You know, the CD that everyone loves to trash!….. Oh, and I’m not part of the “Bey HIVE” I’m JBH!

**Either way, Adele will remain the top selling SOUL MUSIC act of 2012 believe that. The PTB aren’t playing with you ppl! LOL 🙂

    • MC the place to be!! August 3, 2012

aw shut up!! mariah>>>>>>>>beyonce adele>>>>>>>>>>>chris brown and on a sidenote this is going to be mariah 14th album in her 22 years and counting career NEXT

    • Virtuoso Intellect August 3, 2012

If her era is better managed in terms of leaks, promo and singles then it should perform better than 4. If Bey wanted to return R&B to the top of the charts, she wouldnt have 1) managed herself 2) release an album knowing fully well she was pregnant. The messiness of the 4 era is so embarassing. Im just glad for the performances and critical acclaim

    • ThéLourson August 3, 2012

Lol “why you so obsessed with her” ? 2 comments in 10 minutes…. Please.

    • andyd August 4, 2012

those snippets are not from her new cd. he s*** is always on lockdown and NEVER leaked. those snippets are from her collection of ringtones she recorded for her pepsi endorsement. check ya self before you reck ya self!

“if we could bring that days when R&B records didn’t have to crossover and just be hits on their own”
    SHADE.
but she did not lie, these days most r &b artists have to compromise themselves to sell.

  10. trizzy trainwreck August 3, 2012

This woman should take a sit,

  11. Le Velvet King August 3, 2012

    I believe in you, Mariah.

  12. KD August 3, 2012

She’d have better luck trying to bring back Dodo’s from extinction. White America is not here for R&B unless it comes from an unattractive white female that makes the feel comfortable.

  13. JER August 3, 2012

Me and Mariah just aren’t in tune these days. I for one am over the whole “we’re gonna bring back R&B” “we’re gonna do an old skool sound” or “we want to do REAL R&B” chile please. It’s called the public is over the same tired producers making the same TIRED R&B songs that’s why R&B isn’t selling and why POP radio won’t touch R&B. We had over a decade of R&B dominance from the late 90’s to the late 2000’s. A lot of GREAT songs and AMAZING albums.

Take Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige, who put out great R&B in the late 90’s but struggled in the early 2000’s, then made a great record in 2005 but then went on to make subpar or just ok albums after that.

Mariah can talk about doing R&B music all she wants, but she’s a POP STAR, she always has done both and she needs to keep on with that. I am not hear for Charmbracelet 2.0 of Mariah whispering on every song.

How many times can Mariah say she is gonna “Take it back” or “go throw back” or “have a retrospective moment dahling.” Every album she says the same thing and all we get is WEAKER music and WEAKER vocals. HELL Memoirs was trying to be a damn Greatest Hits. PULEAZEEE. Mariah please go to Madison Square Garden and have all the seats.

    • Jayla August 3, 2012

Mariah has not done pop since Music Box, What the hell are you talking about, SHE IS R&B
