This girl is has her place in the music industry. . .call her a gimmick, call her talentless, but no one will last for close to 7 years, with just hype & a gimmick alone. There’s something to her, and it is that something which is what has kept her career alive. Her personality is a breath of fresh air, and her demeanor & temperament make her interesting, which is useful, but shouldn’t be the sole area of focus as at the end of the day, we’re here for the music.
Do I think she is classic? NO! Iconic? YES! Will I be listening to her music 20 years from now? Probably not. Her success is huge & resembles that power pop music has when it is engineered intelligently & how over-exposure can be used as a tool to garner a somewhat long-lasting success. You look at the Spice Girls for an example, intelligently created with a great team but as much as I love them, I cannot recall the last time I played their music, don’t even think I have their stuff in my music library, but groups like TLC, and Destiny’s Child I will constantly blast every now and & have a good time because their’s is of quality. Their craft holds. And this is what makes them legendary & this is what music is about.
Will Rihanna’s legacy stand the test of time? Only time will tell which artists remain remembered for their craft, and which fall off & only be remembered for their image & scandalous lives & become nothing more than a memory of a well structured symbol pop with music that failed to sustain.

Good old Google always has the answer and according to its results, Rihanna was ranked the third most Googled celebrity woman of last year. This is a praise certainly worth mentioning given that people resort to Google to search for basically everything, so the fact that Rihanna is one of the hottest topics among female celebs is definitely a commendable accomplishment. My review: “Brilliant, resilient, fan mail from 27 million.” I’m sure this is a rough estimate, but Rihanna takes on a boastful tone that you might expect from a rapper. She definitely sets the tone for this album with “Wait Your Turn.” Rihanna proclaims that “the wait is over” and, in low vocals says that she is ready to take over. This album could do just that if people are able to accept this new, vulnerable and vulgar Rihanna.

We see the turmoil of a relationship (could she be talking about Chris? It’s more fun if we think she is) filled with infidelity. “Stupid in love” is actually one of my favorites on the album. She tells the tale of a woman who is constantly arguing with her lover, meanwhile, her friends are telling her to leave the relationship alone. She says she is dumb enough to fall for him and love him, but not stupid enough to stay in a bad situation. The lyrics are honest, the beat is steady and never slows down too much, since this is not a ballad — it’s a tense argument with herself right before a breakup. “Hard” is a crowd pleaser featuring Young Jeezy who gives a mediocre rap, in my opinion, that doesn’t live up to the Miss. Bossy-feel of the song’s lyrics. Rihanna warns against people attempting to bring her down. “I see you aiming at my pedestal / I’m here to let you know / That I’m so hard.” It’s upbeat, in your face and cocky. Perfect music to play to boost your confidence or get ready for a night out. “Rockstar 101″ has the same effect. The song has a great electric guitar and takes “Party Like a Rockstar” to the next level. You won’t be able to help nodding your head and singing along. It’s best listened to at full volume, driving under city lights.

“Russian Roulette” is the big song on the radio right now. It works great lyrically as a metaphor or taken literally (though the literal meaning is quite scary). Rihanna sings the song honestly and uses strong vocals not expected of most pop stars. She gives us a peek into a crazy life, desperate to stick in for the long haul — even when the consequences can be dire. It’s uplifting, disturbing and utterly stupid at the same time. Sure to become a favorite.

“Rude Boy” I suspect will get some radio play. It’s a take-charge song with sexy lyrics that are just a hair shy of Trina’s bluntness. It would make new feminist proud with its granting of permission for the male to please the woman, and demands that things go according to what she wants — even if he thinks he’s in control. Not the song you want your kid listening to, but definitely not a damsel-in-distress piece. She croons out “tonight Ima let you be the captain/tonight Ima let you do your thing” but then warns in the next verse “baby, if I don’t feel it, I ain’t fakin’ no more.” About a million guys’ ego were crushed in one fail swoop. The chorus is full of taunts and demands for the “rude boy” to get his unmentionables up so Rihanna can take full advantage. Very riske!

“Photographs” is an odd piece that seems like it would fit better on a Black Eyed Peas album. But, that’s because BEP ringleader Will i am is the one who produced it. The music changes like a dj coming in and out of seizures. The song begins with a folky, Jewel-inspired tone, shifts into a pop song that contradicts the melancholy lyrics and then shocks the listener into a dance-techno trance smack in the middle of the song. It’s a rough voyage for anyone used to listening to one genre, but it’s done in true BEP style for any E.N.D. fanatics.

“I lick the gun when I’m done ’cause you know that revenge is sweet.” This song should have featured Bone Thugs, because that’s who it caters to. “G4L,” or Gangsta for Life, is packed with threats of being taken down by a gang of rough females. “Bitch, I’m with you if you with me.” Language has no censor on this track as Rihanna drops f-bombs without a care and gladly sings “we got our guns in the motherfuckin’ air.” It’s a great song about camaraderie, but not something to aspire to in my opinion. Still that first verse comes in so hard and crisp that I have to love the track in all of its thug-nificense.

Rihanna handles this lesbian attraction with care and sensitivity. “I understand that we all need love and I’m not afraid to feel the love, but I don’t feel that way.” Sung over traditional island music, mandolin plucking a beautiful rhythm into your ears, this song is intriguing and beautiful.

“Cold Case Love” sounds like the last days of Rihanna and Chris’ relationship after the horrible beating. Once again, the lyrics are honest, raw and she sings them like she is reading right from her own hindsight diary entry. The notes come out easily and filled with emotion. The drums don’t come in until the end of the song, making for a dramatic conclusion equal to the hype surrounding Rihanna and Chris’ relationship when the crime was committed.

Sadly, I have nothing to say about “The Last Song.” It’s not a bad song, but i can’t find a reason to listen to it all the way through when the rest of the album is up to its neck in masterpieces. Save the best for last must not have been the goal here. But, this makes a great end to a live concert. The instruments will vibrate through the stadium and leave the audience feeling good and deep in thought.
There is no doubt, this album came out at just the right time. Anyone who doesn’t support domestic violence has technically become a Rihanna fan. Plus, connecting the songs to Rihanna and Chris makes the listener feel like they know what she’s talking about.

Sam, how comes you are ignoring Rita Ora flashing her boobs twice in one week? On Monday, she showed her full breast on stage – like a playboy model – you can see her whole boob and nipples. The uncensored picture is on the daily mail web. Today she is cold as Germany, signing pics with her bra out?
If this was Rihanna – first of all Rihanna would NEVER expose her full breast and nipples on stage. She is too professional and talented for that. Secondly, if she did do that, you would going HAM.
I am trying to work out why Rita keeps exposing her breast and bra. This the 3rd time she has done this. I thought she had this one of a kind genuine talent to back it up? From 5 outfits in on day; to Rob Kardashian; to the nipples hanging out…..to walking around with BRA out! She has more gimmicks than Rih.
