I haven’t heard the average American argue in defense of Rihanna’s “talents” in general, let alone in comparison to Ciara or anyone else. From what I’ve observed, most of the casual listeners of her music will say that they simply like the songs for what they are, not because they view her as some kind of special or anomalous talent. In other words, it wouldn’t much matter if the same song was released with the name Ciara, Britney Spears or Smurfette attached to it instead…their feeling about it would be virtually the same. Rihanna’s song writers and producers are the one’s with talent, and her A&R people and management are the one’s with the ones with business savvy. If even one of those carefully arranged deck chairs is tampered with, her house of cards would fall faster than a quarter over a cliff.
Rihanna, for all intents and purposes, only exists to be the face of a song that someone else wrote and produced. She’s basically Milli Vanilli, but with production busy enough that allows them to go ahead and use her lackluster voice behind a bunch a overproduced tracks designed to shift attention away from her vocal limitations.
