Weigh In: Why Is Mariah Carey’s ‘You’re Mine (Eternal)’ Tanking?

Published: Wednesday 19th Feb 2014 by Sam

It was billed as “the comeback”. However, after a week of availability, the flame that heated the buzz for Mariah Carey‘s new single ‘You’re Mine (Eternal)’ has but burned out.

As at writing, the track sits at #376 on US iTunes. Yes, three-hundred-and-seventy-six.

A tale of unfortunate proportions, the placing sees the song chart under releases that impacted several years ago. Indeed, the likes Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ (2008), Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ (2011), and even Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ (2010), all rank higher on the tally. Even Mario’s ‘Let Me Love You’ (2004) places above ‘Mine’.

And granted a rebound is plausible as the cut has just been sent to radio and further performances are lined up, the jaw-dropping dip suggests only a marginal rise is likely.

So what is the “problem”?

For That Grape Juice, it’s not actually the song. Carved out in the vein of previous hits such as ‘We Belong Together’ and ‘Don’t Forget About Us’, the track positions Mariah exactly where she should be at this point of her career – serving up accessible radio ballads with subject-matter most can relate to.

Scratch beneath the surface, though, and the cracks that look set to swallow the song’s chances begin to show.

The Video

Touted as a major event, with dual TV and online roll-out via MTV, the tropical clip was slammed by fans and critics alike upon its arrival. Beyond looking like a four-minute montage to Mimi’s “best lighting angle”, approximately nothing happened, giving fans entirely no reason to watch again. It’s misstep that’ll likely cost her video views and ultimately streams – sinful given that the latter could easily have aided the song on the Billboard charts in light of new rules.

Image

As per her own declaration, Mariah is “eternally 12”. Yet, her image has more closely mirrored that of a hyper-sexualised teen in recent years. Indeed, as the singer’s age has creeped higher, her clothes have become shorter and tighter to the point that she isn’t wearing any in the ‘Mine’ visual.

And though we’re utterly against the industry’s silently sexist “demand” that older female acts shouldn’t flaunt their “sexy”, Mariah seems to have miscalculated her own point of appeal.

For, even the loyalest Lamb would admit that this “pin-up” projection Mimi is peddling these days feels forced and uncomfortable (see: candy-flavoured Valentine’s Day shoot). Unlike, the Jennifer Lopez’s of the world, Mariah has never oozed a natural “sexy”. She instead, for many, evokes an air of beauty, class, and regality, and is the epitome of the ultimate “lady”. Why, then, does Carey seem so adamant to strut in a lane that so clearly isn’t hers? It’s puzzling, because given how long she has lasted in the industry one would assume she had a firm grasp on the fact that music is only one part of the “success” narrative – image is a large part of the rest.

Mariah Herself

In an era where acts almost need to be warming and endearing to sell, Mariah presents herself as anything but. Despite the current climate bringing with it the need for folk to buy into an act, Mimi quite literally relays that she’s not for sale. She sits on a level that is both other-worldly and unreachable. A stance she expressed verbatim on ‘The Breakfast Club’ to promote ‘Mine’. Yet, it’s ironically a stance which causes the masses to not reach into their wallets to buy her new music.

Then, of course, there’s her outlandish shade. Over the years, Mimi has dealt many a devastating blow to a number of chart foes – sayings that have been comical for the most part (see exhibits a, b, and c). However, during this recent promotional run, she made remarks and insinuations about other acts (as well as folk in her personal life) that just came across as mean. Yes, she’s a diva and has earned the right to speak her mind. Yet for an otherwise shrewd businesswoman, one would think she’d save certain comments for the day/s she doesn’t have new music to plug. Especially when such comments were about acts that are ironically selling better than she is.

*******

Together the “three problems” triangulate to present Mariah as a cartoonish caricature of her former self and, perhaps, go some way in highlighting why her music doesn’t seem to be moving anymore.

Still, with three months remaining until the May 6th release of ‘Mine’s parent album, it’d be unwise to count Ms. Carey-Cannon out just yet. For, as the mid 00’s proved, Mimi is only ever a release or two away from chart ‘Emancipation’. Can she navigate her way back to success with this release and beyond? Sound off below…

OMG that grape juice why would you guys post this story….it’s sad I love mariah

  2. Cj February 19, 2014

YALL SURE LOVE TALKING ABOUT MARIAH. THE SONG YOU’RE MINE IS ACTUALLY DOING GOOD ON RADIO.

  3. Ashgino February 19, 2014

Because it’s a horrible mid tempo ballad, ain’t nobody got time for no mid tempos unless it’s written by Sia, who wrotes all the number one ballads

  4. JJFan1814 February 19, 2014

It doesn’t appeal to the audience. I downloaded it and only listened to once. As where as I downloaded #Beautiful and listen to it frequently. It’s not a commercial release either. Halo, Superbass, We Found Love, Let Me Love You had a nice melody and a catchy rhythm.

You’re Mine (Eternal) doesn’t. Not in this day in time. Perhaps it would have had more success 10 years ago.

  5. DYNASTY February 19, 2014

    DYIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING @ 376!!!

    ABSOLUTE, DIABOLICAL, DEATH!!!!!!!!!!

    LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Now, watch the lambs come with their 2838485875402 excuses to try and discredit the real reason why it’s FLOPPING!!!!!!!

    KIIIIIIIIIIIIII.

  6. Mc mothered you h*** February 19, 2014

This article is so hateful. You are goin to eat your words when “Youre Mine” rises up the charts.

  7. Mariah floooops February 19, 2014

Because she’s a hasbeen and the song is a dud NEXT

  8. Just sayin February 19, 2014

BECAUSE ITS DATED, BORING UNINSPIRING AND MARIAH IS NOT HOT TO THE KIDS NO MATTER HOW HARD SHE TRYS. PEOPLE DON’T RESPECT HER STANK ATTITUDE UNLESS THEY ARE QUEENS.

  9. metzo February 19, 2014

Loll. Now where are Ya’ll talking ass lamb’s especially Slayriahh? We told yall
Mariah was so 1999. Now she should be called done, flop, old, over.. not queen bey who is stepping over all yall faves careers tho..

  10. Realest February 19, 2014

And this is why the serious-ness of your blog will stay remedial.

Mariah is not a young, new artist. she is established and has run her course. You judging her “eras” and commenting on this and that is so predictable because that’s how you all set things up: compare this era of that diva to that era of this diva. It’s so tired!!!!!!!!! Mariah isn’t an “ERA” type of artist anymore she just makes music and so whatever treatment she chooses to give this time around, that is what it is. She’s not In the runnings of the young crowd who have to come up with memorable “eras” to keep relevance- she has a million. She’s just making music.

I wish y’all would stop hating. Then you might actually get a noteworthy interview and not C list celebs and gospel artists..

  11. Nondelusional February 19, 2014

^but she is trying to appeal to the young audience. One of her stans was posting long articles about her yesterday and her producer said so. Stop acting like she doesn’t care about hits because she does!!!!! Flop!!!

  12. XYZ February 19, 2014

The song is utterly boring – that’s it.

It doesn’t have anything to do with that interview. The song is just boring…as JJFAN1814 already mentioned, it’s not that type of song you want to listen to again. I downloaded it, listened to it…never listened to it again

With that being said, i really loved #beautiful, that was my summer jam… she should have released the album right afterwards, without the desaster that was “the art of flopping”…

mimi lost her midas’ touch…don’t know why, but the songs are just not as catching as they were a few years ago.

On top of that, a lot of people are pissed off by her antics like she’s still 17…

girl, you look good for your age and who cares bout the weight gain…but damn, you’re over 40 with children. you can be s***, but at least be classy s*** and not like a hooker in her early twenties

  13. TGJ Sucks February 19, 2014

For the 1billionth time…TGJ has Mariah’s name in their mouth. She should really seriously sue you for slander…This is getting beyond a joke now! Her music is one thing, but her character is another. Get lawyered up m***********

  14. Mc mothered you h*** February 19, 2014

Exactly^^ these gays take what this article posts and act as if what Sam says is the absolute truth and is the end all be all….child please. Mariah will do just fine shes just been off the scene for a minute.

  15. Just sayin February 19, 2014

And the lambs stay in denial. Mariah DOES care otherwise her album would have been came out when it was supposed to. And she IS trying to appeal to a young audience!

  16. njilf February 19, 2014

As a big fan I actually agree with TGJ…
She has develloped an irritating habit during her interviews which at first , a couple of years ago was funny but now it’s just irritating. I don’t understand why people in her camp are not saying that to her??

This song should really be doing well because it s good.

In my opinion the video is not even the problem, of course it could have been better woth some kind of storyline but the problem is really Mariah herself.

Mariah; stop fixing your hair during the interviews (you look good everytime dont worry!) and stop dwelling on simple questions that interviewers ask you. You are one of the few living legends, act like one.

You brought the good music now bring the good Mariah. I know she’s there!

I could say alot more but I think this is enough lol..

  17. Micks February 19, 2014

Mariah has never been able to reinvent herself. She is boring and her music is boring and it doesn’t work in 2014 sorry lambs deal.

  18. Mariah February 19, 2014

Thats only on itunes chart…lets talk about REAL charts. The song just came out. Her name isnt Mariah Carey for no reason

  19. Tyra February 19, 2014

She’s ruining her legacy by trying too hard and flopping over and over. Bow out gracefully Mimi…

  20. WeAreLambily February 19, 2014

Sorry but Sam isn’t lying here.

  21. JOHNVIDAL February 19, 2014

These guys at THATGRAPEJUICE don´t know a damn thing. Nothing at all!!!
Since when is a video the cause of a problem for someone like Mariah Carey??? We´re not talking about any current model. Videos were never important for Mariah´s success (not to mention I actually liked it, who expected more than that?). The “problem” is the song and the age. The song is good and has grown a lot on me, butiti´s so far from what people and radio demands at the moment. #beautiful was a step in the right direction when it comes to that, it was something kind of new coming from Mariah. If she does this type of music she loves it will be fine, I´ll buy the album anyway and I´m sure it will be quality. But for her to reign in singles charts I think she should change drastically and release something like “Royals”, she would kill it singing songs like that, she would be praised by critics and the songs would be so easy for her to perform live. That´s if she wants hit singles, if she just wants to release the music she wants cos it´s her passion then it doesn´t matter. She´s great regardless.
And the other problem I mentioned was age. Let´s not act as if any other artist around 45 years old is getting hit singles cos NONE of them are.
Seriously TGJ haven´t got a clue.

  22. Matthew Charlery-Smith February 19, 2014

Mariah writes/co-writes her own songs. Great! However, it’s telling that her biggest rivals Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion have had larger successes and far more reaching fame outside America than Mariah Carey. Sometimes you need to let others speak for you, this is what adamant songwriters need to understand. “Thriller”, “Man in the Mirror”, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, “I Will Always Love You”, “My Heart Will Go On” etc have been bigger globally than any of Mariah’s hits. There’s only so much inspiration one person can receive and display. As a result of herself being the main creative source for each release she’s become stuck in repetition. The aforementioned artists wouldn’t be half as famous if they’d insisted on having input on every single song of their careers. This shows that Mariah is disconnected and into her own world where what her mind speaks is the only important thing. Also, she doesn’t look happy. She hasn’t smiled and been playful in a video for ages. She just needs to relax and have fun. How can you appeal to the young looking tired and fed up?

I don’t really think she’s been throwing shade. She’s a grown woman, the most successful artist in the world by many comparisons and has been in the industry for 25 years. So what if she says she hasn’t heard a song by a particular artist? She needs to wear more clothes too! I’m not sure why Mariah feels the need to behave like that when Whitney and Celine who went before her did it fully clothed from start to finish.

The song lacks a good beat and is quite boring. Get with some new producers and songwriters, Mariah! Stop the breathy singing, you’ve been doing that since 1997 and it makes one song/album hard to tell from the next! Her and Prince need a revolution!

  23. MARIAH FAILRY February 19, 2014

    Her music sucks that’s why!!!

  24. Lydia February 19, 2014

    Because its boring.

In other news: James Corden has comfirmed Beys performing at the BRITS today!!!

  25. QueenCeline February 19, 2014

You can say Sam is lying all you want, but the proof is in the pudding. The song is redefining what it means to be a flop but the Lambs are so delusional they can’t see it.
Since when was it normal for a song that came out last week to chart any lower than number 20, let alone number 100, let alone 200, let alone 300?

  26. Kyrie February 19, 2014

Because it’s no longer 1992. This is Beyonces world and Mooriah just lives in it 🙂

  27. XYZ February 19, 2014

    oh, only itunes charts…yeah

and people are buying their music where? oh yeah, guess there was a market leader and it’s name was…itunes..

stop making excuses, the song is flopping…

of course she’s mariah, she won’t get bancrupt out of it…but it’s a fact, the song is flopping. point blank

  28. ARE YOU HIGH?? February 19, 2014

Are you smoking crack you dumb s****?? She is THE QUEEN of reinvention…and not once has she had to grab and squeeze her cooch like Rihanna or Madonna to do it. #GetDead

  29. MCsavedmylife February 19, 2014

People seem to forget that WBT debuted at number 81 on the Hot 100. And look at what it went on to become. Yes, YME is not doing well on the iTunes chart, there is no denying that (you would have to be a fool not to), but that does no necessarily mean that it is a flop. The coming weeks will dictate whether or not the song is a flop or not. Let’s just sit back and see what happens on the Billboard charts and radio.

  30. WHY YALL SUPRISED? February 19, 2014

WHY YALL SUPRISED? TRIUMPHANT TANKED,THE ART OF LETTING GO TANKED… She needs a major overhaul/wakeup call. The diva attitude is revolting, shes sabotaging herself.

  31. Aguilera February 19, 2014

She is a laughing stock regardless of 200 million sold

  32. Yupthatsme February 19, 2014

you sound completely crazy Sam.. and others that believe the song is flopping.. itunes is just itunes…. get outta here.. thats nothing.. Mariah never fails.. the song isnt doing bad at all actually.. theres still more promo to do. People are just so damn brainwashed they forget what real music sounds like..

  33. Mc mothered you h*** February 19, 2014

Lol you guys cant stand the facf that someone whoes been singing for 25+ years is still VERY relevant. Its eating away at you inside isnt it?

  34. Mc mothered you h*** February 19, 2014

I just checked the itunes website. The song Is #56 . Dont believe Sams hate and lies

  35. The Boy Toy February 19, 2014

Lol I see Mariah is the new punching bag around here…

  36. Shaquinisha-rose February 19, 2014

I’m a Lamb and I am far from in denial. I actually happen to agree with some of what the above article states. Mariah isn’t respected by the general public, and I believe this has a lot to do with her image. People just aren’t down with the fact that a 43 year old woman (who I personally think is hot) wears such revealing outfits. I think they prefer the Mariah of old, Tommy’s Mariah. It also has to do with the fact that she throws more shade than a weeping willow. Yes, it can be funny at times but its regularity has increased and it gets old fast. I love her music no matter what, she could sing the phonebook and I’d love it but in recent years her voice has begun to wain, and has sounded strained at times, so when she does actually sound good people don’t believe she is singing live even if she actually is. Finally I think the DIVA thing is dead and gone. get rid of it, the true Mariah is much more fun loving and a jokester, why not show that rather than ‘acting’ like a spoilt diva, because if you play at something like that long enough people will believe that’s who u really are.

  37. FAF February 19, 2014

She did wrong releasing the remix the same day as the original it confuses the listener and the video does not look like it belongs on that remix not to mention she’s a vocal legend and she’s using autotune

  38. The Boy Toy February 19, 2014

The song is weak. Point, blank, period. It sounds like a TEOM b-side, and will result in another album pushback. Braveheart will drop before TAOLG.

  39. FAF February 19, 2014

i agree @mathew thats why r&b is dying bc ppl want uninspired fake soul and pop ballads they dont want autobiographical, soulful music so when one person does all their own writing, even though it pays them, theres no “new sound” each era

  40. Music Stan ( I came I conquer and I draged) ( yall know who I stan 4) February 19, 2014

I would said this…. Mariah is a Legend there’s not doubt in that statement, but for many years she has been trying to give this over the top s** appeal to the generation of today…. and apparently it isn’t working.. I love Old school Mariah but the Mariah after glitter I don’t care for at all … Now the song is very nice but I only listen to it once and move on the next….The video does nothing for the song cause it doesn’t tell a story it just her in a rainforest naked and trey at a photoshoot in new york…. ??? As for her personally it can come off as sometime stink yet can hurt you more then help you…. I think Mariah need to just simply act her age and make music for the mature audicene and her die hard fans… You’ll never see Mary J Blige, Toni Braxton or even Whitney Houston taking off clothes to sell records… they along with her already prove their point in the music biz and has legendary status… Hopefully Mariah will rethink this before releasing her album she still has time

  41. The Boy Toy February 19, 2014

@faf LIES!!! R&B is dying because the music R&B artists are churning out SUCKS!!! It’s stale, dated and uninspiring. People are so pressed over the 90s that they keep recreating these boring love jams or trying to be R&B thugs singing about popping bottles and p****. They tend to forget that the 90s had a different sound than the 80s, 70s, early 2000’s etc. everything sounds the SAME! That’s why I like Brandy because although she flops now, her music never sounds the same. You can write until the cows come home, but if you’re not reaching new heights, creatively….the public won’t support. Mariah needs fresh producers and songwriters to help her be CURRENT since she wants to be young so badly. 😉

  42. My Gums Tho(aka Teacher) February 19, 2014

Leave Mariah alone! I hope Beyoncé breaks a leg tonight..literally

  43. Lovebird February 19, 2014

I told you all this song will FLOP, and it did.

  44. Lovebird February 19, 2014

Mariah NEEDS payola to sell, without it…well.

  45. Music Stan ( I came I conquer and I draged) ( yall know who I stan 4) February 19, 2014

@matthew and @faf I agree R&B is dying thanks to the Men… all they sing about is club and h***…. More of the Females aritsts are singing more about love and life…. it is sad that the females along with Robin Thicke is trying but don’t get the airplay like that

  46. My Gums Tho(aka Teacher) February 19, 2014

And R&B is still not doing great….the last successful mildly R&B song on the Hot 100 was Body Party by Ciara. Idk when real R&B is gonna make a comeback or the person that’s gonna make it relevant again…… And Drunk in Love is NOT R&B! It’s Urban Pop. Jazmine Sullivan is REAL R&B! Keshia Cole, Monica, R. Kelly, etc. EAT MY S***!

  47. Music Stan ( I came I conquer and I draged) ( yall know who I stan 4) February 19, 2014

@boytoy agree… all the guys sing about those things, but the females like Brandy, Monica, Ciara, Kelly, and etc sings about love and other things but don’t get their respect cause it is a Male dominated industry…. All the R&B guys sounds the same on the record to the point I can’t tell who song is it anymore whereas females I can tell the difference between a Brandy record from a Tamar record… It is sad the Justin Timberlake, Miguel,TGT, John Legend, and Robin Thicke are the only one who still sing about other things beside poppin bottles and n***** ain’t loyal and childish things like that… I’m finding myself listening to more NEO-SOUL artists and female R&B Divas then the fellas

  48. JOHNVIDAL February 19, 2014

I repeat: is any other artist around 45 years old getting Hit SINGLES??? Simple answer:NO. I already stated how I think she could get them. But you all have to be honest: she´s the only artist her age that could potentially get them. Are Whitney (my beloved thing, RIP) or Celine Dion getting hit SINGLES thanks to being humble and not showing skin? Simple answer again: NO. No one. So keep that advice for yourselves cos it clearly doesn´t work.
It´s a nice discussion to talk about why something works commercially or doesn´t, but to the users who are haters in this post: your arguments are totally invalid.
Again the main thing is the song itself in this Mariah´s case, not because it is bad, but because it is far from what people want. It could still work if radio decides to support. But overall it seems she wants to keep making the music she wants (and of course still get hits) but not sacrifice making the music she wants just for a hit. If so, she would do what I said in my previous comment. One thing ios for sure, she stays true to her artistry.

  49. S****** Blonde February 19, 2014

Sam make this kind of articles every time an old Diva start a new era (with the exception of his beloved Janet, of course!), he did the same thing to Madonna during the whole MDNA era and i’m pretty sure the hate is already in the works for her new album aswell but watch him make posts about how great and above her peers Janet is, if she ever releases another album, like the kind of post he makes about Beyonce, you get the idea, this is what he does when he likes and dislike an artist. He is as predictable as his Goddess (Beyonce) dance moves.

  50. YourMineEternal IS A FUTURE HIT!! February 19, 2014

Every Future Hit is not Microwavable some have to marinate and bake for awhile case in point #AllOfMe wasnt a major hit when it was 1st released it grew on people THEN AFTER JOHN PERFORMED IT ON THE GRAMMYS IT TOOK OFF NOWS ITS #1 @ Adult R&b in the top 5 on Itunes and has crossed over to Pop Charts!! Bloggers and Critics need to be patient and understand music that goes against the grain of whats the trend will take time to grow on the listeners ear im certain this will be a future hit if promoted correctly This song is anything but boring and it seems to be doing ok with adds at radio Lets not make our focal point ITUNES SALES lets look a the whole picture #VevoViews #RadioAdds ##Promotion&Marketing & yes a occasional glance at itunes

  51. C.J. February 19, 2014

Honestly, the song was decent. But the promo was boring and it just felt like, for me, I wasn’t able to relate to it. Like the Valentine’s candies and the song title… just felt gimicky. Like it was a Valentines Day “treat” for her core fans…. not something that she was releasing as a single to the masses. The whole thing was boring, especially if you DIDN’T have a valentine and didn’t want to hear a love song. If I were her, I’d wait until late spring, right before summer starts and come out with a summer smash.

  52. YourMineEternal IS A FUTURE HIT!! February 19, 2014

“ALL OF ME” By John Legend is R&b at its best and its doing great on The Hot 100, Adult R&b,Pop & Itunes charts So R&b is back already i think if R&b was given as much promotion as Pop Or Country it would do as well if not better!! Mariah just needs to along with her team continue to push this single

  53. The Boy Toy February 19, 2014

All Of Me is a great R&B song. Happy is a great R&B/Soul/feel good song. You’re Mine is not a great song. It’s dull. Some of you only like it because it’s Mariah. If it were any other R&B singer you wouldn’t care for it.

  54. Mark111 February 19, 2014

Cause she was just smoke and mirrors through out her career and people finally knows it now. She’s Janet Jacksoning herself by releasing flop after flop, except JJ put in a lot of work last decade, MC is just lazy.

Where the LAMES at? They were acting like this was the best song in the world last week. I guess they’re in hiding along with the Britney Spears and Gaga stans.

  55. Rob February 19, 2014

Real recognizes real and I usually can’t stand Sam, but everything he wrote in this article is CORRECT. I think I’m going to send a link to Mariah on Instagram.
I’m a hardcore Lamb, but I’m worried. Mariah and her team need a honest intervention and come to terms with what is turning people off from her. I think the main thing is her IMAGE. She needs to be classier in terms of her look and clothing. Also, no more attitude in interviews or just don’t interview at all. Only do AMAZING LIVE PERFORMANCES to sell the song.

  56. jt February 19, 2014

And of course, your icon is of a woman who steals music from songwriters.

  57. jt February 19, 2014

It hasn’t been sent to radio yet — give it a chance. I know you uneducated Beyonce fanatics have to write about something, but you could at least wait until it impacts radio and see how it does before pronouncing it unsuccessful.

On the positive side, there were fewer grammatical errors and less awkward usage in this post. Congratulations to you.

  58. Better yet a navy February 19, 2014

Who’s the ugly guy in the video with the tight face & horrid makeup job. The irony of u saying shade is bad for business

  59. eric February 19, 2014

Mariah is used to having control in many areas of her career. I think it’s time to step back and let a creative team take the lead for a little while–image, song choice, everything. It wouldn’t hurt to try.

  60. frank February 19, 2014

Great article ! Loved everything about it.
    I hate this fat b****!

  61. ROSEGOLD February 19, 2014

Sadly everything about Mariah is dated. From her music and clothing, to her hair. Like someone stated, she needs a complete image overhaul. “You’re Mine” isn’t a bad song at all, it just doesn’t stick. It wouldn’t hurt for her to welcome some new people into her circle.

  62. Music Stan ( I came I conquer and I draged) ( yall know who I stan 4) February 19, 2014

@john yes at her age to still have hits is great but these naked attempt is more for the pop divas and not for her… she already stamped her name in the business….. let these pop divas do your old scraps and sit back and enjoy… Mariah doesn’t need to prove anything to the young generation… that is why people are hard on her… cause she is a Legend… Tina, Aretha and Patti don’t have to do these childish antic to keep relevancy in the Game… Their Name, Success, and Power does it for them…. Their Success speaks louder than anything…. When Mariah learns this then the General Public will stop the harass treatment… but until then it is going to continue

  63. ROSEGOLD February 19, 2014

@Music Stan I agreeeee!!! People really don’t respect Mariah’s legacy and it’s sad. The diva act and cheesy music/image are ruining everything she built in the 90’s. I liked Glitter lol, but the publics perception of her started to dwindle around that time. She regained respect in 05, but quickly started to lose it again afterward. I hate to compare, but Mary J Blige is doing the damn thing right now. She released a very successful Christmas album, performed at the Noble Peace Price Concert, performed for President Obama and the president of France and she just booked the OSCARS! That’s what legends are made of. MJB knows that she no longer has anything to prove…especially for this new generation who has no type of loyalty to artists. Mariah needs to stop trying to impress the kiddies and be the legend she rightly deserves to be!

  64. RASPUTIN February 19, 2014

Mariah needs to freshenup her look and her sound and her attitude, by default she is the voice (RIP Whitney, she sings the same thing year after year, even beautiful and letting go and now your mine is nothing different from the years gone, take some risks, change her vocal styling, cut the horse hair and for GOD-sake stop trying to drees in clothes for miley and the other teeny boppers, in other words become relevant again. The music industry changes rapidly she should also.

  65. eric February 19, 2014

I didn’t think Glitter was all that bad either. I liked the soundtrack more.

  66. Theman February 19, 2014

People do respect Mariah, saying that they don’t is an outright lie. ITunes is not the main chart. Let’s see how the song does when released to radio.. Sam u wrote three pages, u are a pressed fan. U should be doing this for Kelly/Ciara/Brandy. They need it more than ever. Mariah is the only one that u do this with. It’s hate period. U have been picking little things to make articles out of. She could relax with the diva thing a little perhaps, and she’s a great songwriter. But letting others write for her is great also.. She could also work with other producers.. She does have a lot of control. The issue with sites like this and current music is that y’all expect instant hits. This is a song that marinates. R&b songs take a little longer to connect, see “DIL”.. John Lefends “ALL OF ME” is just now climbing. Why would u expect a song that has just been released to be a hit instantly, without radio adds. That makes no sense.. The song could be a little higher on iTunes, but let’s see how this works on radio..

  67. BEYONCE F***** BARAK OBAMA February 19, 2014

yeah and it was expected tbqh.

  68. Jdek February 19, 2014

It’s basic and boring af. Who’s trying to listen to that crap? plus her fan base isn’t as strong as it use to be. She’s not legendary enough to make crappy music and still be supported.

  69. Mariah Love February 19, 2014

wow, this site really is out to destroy anyone who they think is a challenge to Beyonce, extremely sad that someone would go out for the to write an Essay hoping that if enough people read it, they’ll see her as flop.

Well here is the thing, Mariah Carey is already a living legend who has created a back catalogue that will ladt generation after generation way after we have all seen our graves.

We all know that radio are agest and when an artist gets to a certain age they don’t blow them up as much, regardless of how great the work is, this happens with Madonna, Janet, and the legends before them Cher, Tina Turner, Aretha.

However these women have nothing to prove, whilst we watch from a distance and try and bring these beautiful hard working talented women, down because of petty rivalry that we create, they continue to make great music and live from the legendary back catalogue that made them who they are today!

Beautiful and You’re Mine, are both great songs, Mariah did her job, she is not to blame in any way for whether radio decide to play her work or not, or what labels do as far as promo she can only deliver good music thats her job.

Her personality has been the same for the last 15 years, and so has her dress sense, whats sad is that people think its cool to try and destroy the hard work that these artist put in to deliver great music just for the sake of being bitchy, but God see’s everything and will continue to bless her as he has done since she was 17

  70. Oinkriah Carey (Pork De Force) February 19, 2014

Damb the Lamb chops got more excuses the a niggah going to jail Ki Ki

  71. ABC February 19, 2014

Mariah had a great run from 1990-2008. She’s done.

  72. Mark111 February 19, 2014

And this is why you never push an album back. I know she hurt her shoulder, but she was still promoting Beautiful, and it was a hit, jow she has to get another one. Just drop the album, it will do fine, maybe not platinum, but gold.

  73. NICKI IS QUEEN OTHER B****** TAKE A SEAT February 19, 2014

I see NO LIES! Hagriah is a hasbeen and it’s time to hang it up. I don’t think people would buy the song even if her attitude was different.

  74. Kevin February 19, 2014

I absolutely love Mariah, she’s a LEGEND, and she can do no wrong in my eyes. I’ll definitely be purchasing her album no matter what. And speaking of shade, she’s the Queen of it, and I love it.

  75. HOTSTUFF February 19, 2014

Mariah needs to stop wanting to show that she can sing. it’s been 20 years and the world knows that she can hit all the notes etc. What she needs to focus on is a song that is catchy, a track where the main focus is on the song and not her voice…i don’t know how to explain it. The world isn’t surprised anymore when they hear a mariah song where she’s hitting all kind of notes. Beautiful was the right direction because it was the perfect balance between her voice,a catchy song, with a nice melody, the focus was more on the song…i’m not saying that she needs to ‘lower’ her talent and make basic music but it seems like she’s getting complacent, she thinks because she sings a song with her epic voice that it will be a hit, this was true 20 years ago, now people want a great song from Mariah, no rehash, not where she’s only showing that she can still sing (you’re mine)…

  76. Biting Truth February 19, 2014

Mariah’s problem is that she doesn’t know how to create music for the sake of art and being an artist. Her motivation for everything is chart success and commercial appeal to key buying demographic; that’s how she was bred by Tommy and while it worked in the 90s, it doesn’t anymore…or at least not the same way…and its turned into a tragic element of her now. At 25 she never envisioned being at this stage of her career.

She never tried to get better as a live performer, she never tried to strengthen her touring prowess, she never tried to better her visual aspect, she never let herself become motivated by non-commercial music experimentation…it was always about competing for the top of the Hot 100. The one genuine weapon she had going for her was her voice, and she didn’t even maintain that. So now what does she have to fall back on? At over 40, when the average music buyer now either wasn’t born yet when “One Sweet Day” was on the radio, or was just a baby at the time, she doesn’t know what to do with herself now that she’s seen as someone’s mothers music…and she’s too much of an egoist to reconcile going the Celine route and being happy just appealing to the grown folks who came up with her. Sad.

  77. Casual February 19, 2014

    This.

She could be selling to the fan base that’s aged with her like Celine Dion, but that’s not the way she wants to go.

  78. Casual February 19, 2014

Was trying to respond to a comment by Just Sayin’.

  79. B.Mike February 19, 2014

Love Mariah, but the song is average. She doesn’t need average — she needs “Fantasy” or “Honey.” Mariah, please go back to the URBAN POP, MID-TEMPO sound you helped to pioneer, a la “Drunk In Love” and “The Way”. We need a beat babe.

  80. Ami February 19, 2014

Love Mariah but the song is too tame.Where is the pop and sizzle in the words of the song? She needs to get rid of all the yes people on her management team.

  81. RASPUTIN February 19, 2014

Nobody is out to destroy Mariah, fact is fact, and I “Her personality has been the same for the last 15 years, and so has her dress sense”. Do you wear the same thing from 15 years ago, do have the same hairtstyle from 15 years ago, do think or act the same from 15 years ago, her music should represent her growth as an artist. YESSSS she has a great voice and yessss she is pretty, but for pete’s sake, are we to believe that this 40ish woman has had no ups and downs in her life that we can relate tooo or is she encased in a magical bubble made of bubble gum and candy, Heck no, she can be a down right b**** that throws shade. so its unrealistic of her to expect ppl to see her as this oh so sweet and delicate naked flower. its about GROWTH as an artist, you are not same as when your were 12 (I hope) and neither am I. She has a voice use the damn thing, all of its textures and shades and tones etc…I’m fedup of the nursery rhymes and bubble gum.

  82. Music Stan ( I came I conquer and I draged) ( yall know who I stan 4) February 19, 2014

@Rosegold exaclty I love me some MJB AND she is very classy… she had her bumps in the road but that was when she was younger now she is a GROWN WOMAN and a living legend

  83. HOTSTUFF February 19, 2014

    @ B MIKE

EXACTLY WE NEED A BEAT !!

  84. Nicki Minaj the queen February 19, 2014

    has been 😉

  85. Ajanni February 19, 2014

This was an awesome write-up. To keep it short, I think she was doomed the minute she spoke ill about Beyonce’s Drunk in Love and little, mighty-voiced Ariana Grande. Whether it was shade or not, her professing she had never heard of Drunk In Love was not a good move. Beyonce’s fan base is massive, and many were also big Mariah fans too, but as proven too many times, the Beyhive will not only attack you on Twitter, they will shade the hell out of your sales too.

Ariana Grande’s fan base is devoted and made up a younger sect who were also fans of Mariah until her Breakfast Club interview.

Maybe she’ll make a comeback. We’ll see. Like the article states, it’s never a good move to shade folks when you are trying to sell your album.

  86. LOL February 19, 2014

LOL SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUŔE NOT MARRIED TO THE BOSS? LOL…

  87. Navy Nick February 19, 2014

it is a great song, she messed up with that tacky video, and inlcuding weak *** Trey Songz! BUT THE song is good- Mariah is just boring tho!!!

  88. Theman February 19, 2014

Y’all are giving Ariana wayyyyyyyyyy toooooo much credit.. Her album isn’t even gold. She appeals to kids. Mariah could careless about little kids in terms of music. Y’all forget that MC appeals to different FANBASES.. Y’all don’t tell Jay Z to make appropriate music, when he’s walking around using the N word. People just have it out for MC.. Bottom Line. This song is great, a lot of y’all are just used to uptempo ready
made garbage.. As if Ariana’s nickelodeon FANBASE even really knows what ” THE BREAKFAST CLUB” is.. ONLY BEYONCE FANS TOOK THAT INTERVIEW SERIOUSLY. Y’ALL THINK EVERYTHING IS SHADY.. SHE DIDN’T KISS A**.. HER FANS ARE SUPPORTIVE NO MATTER WHAT.. LETS SEE WHAT RADIO DOES !!

  89. Jemina Nelson February 19, 2014

EMPRESS MARIAH IS IN A LEAGUE OF HER OWN, COMPARED ONLY TO KING WHITNEY(RIP). BEY CAN SING BUT SHE’S NO WAY NEAR MARIAH’S VOCAL ABILITY. TO COMPARE A CAN BE LEGEND TO A WANNA BE LEGEND IS JUST RIDICULOUS! TELL THEM LIKE IT IS GIRL!

  90. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) February 19, 2014

These h*** are pressed. Mariah remains unbothered. She sold more than all your faves.

  91. JOHNVIDAL February 19, 2014

And some hours later the haters still seem to not be able to stay on topic. For the 3rd time: we are talking about HIT SINGLES!!!! Is any other artist (male or female) getting hits at Mariah´s age??????????? No lol In fact she´s like the only one with the potential to do it and that´s why you follow her every move and stay pressed.
Can´t believe some people are giving MJ Blige as an example! When was her last hit? I mean, be serious. Her last Xmas album did so well? When? Better than Mariah´s last one? No.Does she sell any damn thing outside the USA? No.
Ok, I want to focus on singles, cos that´s the topic. Who is talking about Ariana in this post? lol Has that girl EVER get a decent hit at all????? LOL You haters kill me. What a pair of stupid examples.
Like I said, if there is a problem it is the type of song she released, it is not the trend, so either it grows after promo and a lot of work to make the masses appreciate music which is not the trend of the moment ot it flops. One can still release an album without a hit single, ask any artist above 30 who are unable to get a hit.

  92. JOHNVIDAL February 19, 2014

People who were very successful in the 90s both commercially and critically are Lenny Kravitz, Alanis Morissette, Roxette, Sheryl Crow, Jewel and many, many more. Where are their hit singles in the lasdt 15 years? LOL I mean, be real. And they are true musicians who love this so even if you don´t know it, they are still making music and releasing albums, but do their albums sell something anywhere? No. They just can´t chart.
So Mariah, Madonna and Celine are like the only ones doing it, and even these 3 can´t get a hit single, except Mariah potentially like I said. So respect and enjoy their still great efforts. I still remember how last November that other blog made an article giving proof that both Celine and Mariah still slay all your faves vocally now, in 2013, with a capellas. If only for their talent even at their 40s, you should know better than bashing them.

  93. CJ February 19, 2014

**UPDATE** Mariah Carey’s “You’re Mine” debuted this week at #88 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

  94. JOHNVIDAL February 19, 2014

Without being sent to radio and for a woman in her 40s and for an R&B song it is not a bad debut at all. We´ll see in the next weeks though.

  95. MC!!! February 19, 2014

it debut on hot 100 at #88 without any airplay shes doing something right and the critics loved it leave mariah alone and let her do what she does best!!! #makemusic

  96. MUSICHEAD February 19, 2014

The problem here is simple: The song is BORING!

I am a big fan but why is her team allowing her to release these uninspired songs? The song is boring, dry, annoying, not catchy and did I mention BORING!

Please try again and this time bring the heat Mariah!

  97. Oinkriah Carey (Pork De Force) February 19, 2014

her flop song debuted at the bottom of the chart lmao 88= flop of the year

  98. Teflon Boy February 19, 2014

There are a number of aspects that I truly believe could help Mariah Carey at this point in her career. I am a huge fan of her talent, it’s clear she still has it in abundance. Personally, I think her and her team are extremely complacent when it comes to the packaging of her output. Whether it is her look, her wardrobe, her jewellery, the actual production, there hasn’t seemed to be any definitive evolution in theme the last few projects.

There is no rhyme, reason or defining appeal of her most recent projects IMO i.e. at least when you think of Daydream and Butterfly, they seem like completely different bodies of work. Visually, vocally and sonically they are completely different.., one I think of as black and white, ballad heavy and stark, the other as warm, honey dipped, lyrically complex and personal. If the tacky ‘Rainbow’ had been more classy ‘Kaleidoscope’ then it might have snowballed into a really cool pattern. The ‘Emancipation’ also stands out in her discography as an era that really got it right in terms of how each video tied together in terms of narrative and overall look; sepia, gold, white, black and Old Hollywood Glamour. It really worked with the Motown-esque balladry.

Lately, she has all but given up trying to give her projects a connected theme. YME had potential would what distinguishes it as a ‘piece’ of a greater ‘whole’? At this point I have no idea what the new era is trying to get across. I can’t think of a single act that doesn’t benefit from cultivating a definable era so to think that Mariah doesn’t ‘need’ to offer this is misguided.

  99. Grab February 19, 2014

She’s just a b****. Her flopping is the result of only one thing:karma

  100. James February 19, 2014

She needs to tone the bitchy attitude. I can’t stand her

  101. CJ February 19, 2014

Shut up hater. The song came out a week ago. It was barely sent to radio today and is already on the top and and is getting heavy rotation. Someone is clearly obsessed with Mariah. Let it go! Really? Oinkriah Carey, who says that(

  102. James L February 19, 2014

The reason the song is tanking is because its fuc*ing sh*t. Worst song out of the recent singles she’s had.

  103. Ever.Green February 20, 2014

At least it’s Charting, it’s debuting at #88 on Billboard … not bad.
Better then Through the rain (peak #81) or Up Out My Face with Nicki (#100).

Songs great, and I’ve heard it on the radio a lot – Hopefully it grows, it’s seems like what ppl have been asking MC to do!

    #Beautiful (#15)
The Art of Letting Go (4theLambs)
    You’re Mine

All solid songs!! Looking forward to the new album

  104. Patrick February 20, 2014

Bottom line is, the song sucks. Her latest efforts have barely been efforts at all. She is delusional and thinks she is still coy, s*** Mariah (the one she created in her head). The thing is, she isnt s***, she is a mother and people want her to sing about her life and experiences, not about this b******* teenage crush s***. She needs a heavy reality check and to get out of her own head, or I fear she will never release another hit.

  105. Antonio February 22, 2014

The main issue with Mariah at this point is image and sound. Ppl in my age group 24+, are familar with Mariah’s shade. But ppl 21 and younger aren’t. They think she’s being a hater or just mean. You’re Mine is actually a solid song, but it’s not the best choice for a single tbh. #Beautiful was something new and refrshing for Mariah and it appealed to the younger demographic, as did songs like Touch My Body, Bye Bye amd Obsessed with is why they charted high. You’re Mine apis typical Mariah. 18 yr old’s aren’t hear for 43 yr old women singing mid tempo ballads. Look at how MJB’s The One, I Am, Don’t Mind, Why and Mr. Wrong flopped off the charts, however, MJB’s albums all have sold very well due to her remaining consistent all while adding new sounds occassionally. Look at Ciara. She took it back to her R&B roots with Body Party and got a huge hit, but she switched it too soon with Overdose and ppl were confused and it flopped. Sorry could’ve been a huge R&B crossover single, but ppl weren’t checking for Ciara at all during 2012. Mariah needs to crap this entire project tbh and start with new producers ans writers, who’ll bring a refeshing sound to her while keeping it vintage Mariah because this album is on track to becoming the biggest flop of her career. Memoirs sold 600k in the US and 1.5 mil WW just off the hype of her name and from her just E=MC a yr and a half earlier, but this album has nothing to fall back on. Look at Madonna’s and Celine’s last albums, they didn’t do s*** and Janet’s only flopped because she was still blacklisted by the Super Bowl fiasco. Mariah, Ciara and Xtina all need a whole new image and sound revamp because they’ll be doomed in a yr or two. Neither of them can experience another flop album/era or they’ll be done forever

  106. Greg March 2, 2014

It’s a great song. I’ll still love and support MC.

  107. Anonymous March 4, 2014
