Dr. Dre is back.

Though the legendary MC has been omnipresent with his entrepreneurial endeavours, musically he hasn’t released new material in over 13 years.

That’s all set to change next Friday (August 7th), when the Beats mogul blazes back onto the scene with ‘Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre.’

More details on the project’s unique concept below…

Speaking during his new Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music, the rapper revealed:

“I decided during principal photography [for the Straight Outta Compton movie] that I was leaving the set, coming to the studio, and I felt myself just so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album/ I started recording a soundtrack. I kept it under wraps, and now the album is finished.

It’s an inspired-by album, it’s inspired by Straight Outta Compton. I’m really proud of this, I’m excited about it.”

That wasn’t where the surprises stopped, though. For, the announcement brought with it confirmation that the long-awaited ‘Detox’ album has officially been shelved. He explained:

“This is something you’re not gonna hear many artists say. The reason why ‘Detox’ didn’t come out is because I didn’t like it. It wasn’t good. The record, it just wasn’t good. I’ma keep it all the way 1000 with you. Seriously, I worked my ass off. I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans, and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn’t feeling it.

I’m ready this time [though], it’s really coming out. I’m so excited about it. I think everybody’s gonna really get into these records, man.”

Joining Dre on the set, which is due for an iTunes exclusive roll-out are acts including Kendrick Lamar, Marsha Ambrosius, and fellow West Coast rap pioneer Snoop Dogg.

No excuses. Detox was first announced back in 2001. It took him 14 years to conclude that he wasn’t feeling the material and to abandon it? He could have started all over years ago and put out 10 album in all that time. This had nothing to do with wanting to do right by fans; the same fans he’s kept waiting for over 15 years. You don’t do that to fans. They’ll rightfully abandon you for that level of truancy. This was all about him making so much money from headphones that a new album fell way down his list of priorities.

But think about it….14 years of anticipation is hard to conquer. every song would have to sound like it was worth the 14 years….good luck with that.
