Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history

This week we’ll revisit ‘Lady Marmalade’ – the colossal Missy Elliott-produced remake of Patti Labelle‘s 70s hit.  Featuring the Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, P!nk, and Mya, the unexpected quartet boosted the tune to the top of the charts this week in 2001 and kept it there for 5 weeks.  ‘Marmalade’ was so successful it not only topped 2001’s year-end charts as it reigned as the year’s best-selling release, it went on to garner a Grammy for the ladies and remain the highest selling releases from Lil Kim and Mya’s overall catalogue (while P!nk and Aguilera would go on to earn even higher accolades in their respective careers).

Strut down memory lanes with us as we press ‘play’ on the ‘Moulin Rouge’ soundtrack hit:

My, my, how the tides have turned…

  2. king z May 27, 2016

who would’ve guessed it would be P!nk, out of all them, that would have a sustained career!

yes, xtina is still makin money but she’s commercially irrelevant

    • BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 May 27, 2016

Right, Pink has always been a silent killer. X-Tina still thinks she is (this X-Tina from 2001) however her voice and “The Voice” is the only thing keeping her relevant

      • Rich 86 May 29, 2016

Let’s not forget you pressed b****** as well. After lady marmalade christina aguilera was far more explosive than pink. Bionic and lotus just wasn’t good and clearly christina wasn’t into those two projects but this Era she’s coming back strong and she’s gonna slay. She can’t have a third album flop and therefore she’s definitely going to show up and show out like never before. Even though she had two failed albums she still does more concerts than pink.

  3. Credits May 27, 2016

Seeing this list took me right back to grade 7. I’m waiting for the epic collaboration of this magnitude for this decade, but right now, it’s every singing b*tch for herself lol.

  4. BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 May 27, 2016

Beyonce & aribanna are the only female artist that have the potential to make (Huge collaboration for this decade) however most female artist are more (selfish) compared to woman back in the 90’s & early 2000’s

    • Cough Cough May 27, 2016

That’s just be for social media hoopla and theory. In actuality that’d be a boring, maybe mediocre pairing. Wouldn’t have the same effect as this of whitneys/Mariahs etc. it’s slay on iTunes for a couple days then be forgotten

  5. Black power May 27, 2016

Omgggg we really ran the charts back then… Back when we use to support our artist.

Now everyone outside of an “elite few” are deemed as flops no matter what they put out

    • King Mark111 /.\ May 27, 2016

      Oh. Shut. Up!

      • Black power May 27, 2016

Fuckkk you, you miserable troll… I don’t see your fav anywhere on that chart.. And she was still alive at the time

  6. No favs, just here for the music May 27, 2016

Wow just took an unexpected trip down memory lane looking at that chart lol! It feels good though remembering those times and the music associated with it

  7. Weezy Tha Goat/ Zayn is ? May 27, 2016

Minus 911 and the death of Aaliyah 2001 was a great year for me.

  8. The Kpop Guy, Matt~ May 27, 2016

    I’m like a bird <3
What happened to her after "Loose"?
That album was CRAYZEE good, especially "say it right" and "All good things come to an end"

    • #JACKIE May 27, 2016

She released an album that sold like 6k a few years ago kii

      • The Kpop Guy, Matt~ May 27, 2016

        That you?

  9. King Mark111 /.\ May 27, 2016

This was the 3rd song to top the chart with just air play. 2nd was Survivor and 1st was Try Again. 🙂

    • coupe May 30, 2016

Survivor didn’t top the chart lol

  10. #JACKIE May 27, 2016

    Mya used to SLAY!

    • Junior in Jamaica May 27, 2016

She was my favourite in this collabo! S*** and sweet!

  11. King B May 27, 2016

    Survivor peaked at #2.

  12. kwinzy May 27, 2016

OMFG City High!??? Totally forgot about them!

    Starts singing…

“What would you do if your son was at home
    Crying all alone
    On the bedroom floor,
‘Cause he’s hungry and the only way to feed him is to
Sleep with a man for a little bit of money?
And his daddy’s gone in and out of lock down,
    I ain’t got a job now,
    He’s just smokin’ rock now,
So for you this is just a good time
But for me this is what I call life mmmm.”

    That was my jam!

  13. King Mark111 /.\ May 27, 2016

I want the Tards to see Lil Kim’s name up tere, somewhere Nikci never been. #NoNumberOnes

  14. justme May 27, 2016

Omg Mya I loved her so.. Honestly u think she is the only one from the old era that can garner a hit with the right producers and label. She appeals to the masses. She just needs to get off being independent and go back commercial.

    • king May 27, 2016

Mya said as long as the money is right. And as long as the contract benefit both sides. Than she would considering signing with a major label again. She said she has made more money as a indie artist than what she has ever made when she was signed to major label. She said if she sign a deal with a major label. It’ll be for a distribution deal so that she could get her albums into mass retailers and so that she could get more radio support when it comes to her singles

  15. HOWYOULIKEIT May 27, 2016

Oh i remember how this song was so huge !!!
And the video is very impressive and over the top

  16. Gee May 27, 2016

Wow to think Christina was so major back then and fast forward to now Pink has remained the most consistent of all the ladies on this song. But in any respect this collaboration was major in many ways. Missy Elliott receiving credit as producer which is huge and this big for all the ladies at the time.

  17. Junior in Jamaica May 27, 2016

So why Mya’s name not in bold? lol

  18. Kyle May 27, 2016

2001 was hands down my favorite year in music. Looking at the top 20 from that year made me smile because most of those songs were my jams!!! I definitely miss those days.

  19. Annalise May 28, 2016

“Why spend mine, when I can spend yours”

YASSSS KIMMIE! BAD B*TCH CENTRAL!!! This is one of the best all female collabos in history!
a handful of other songs on there are bops, but this is really when a lot R&B started decaying into trashy pop.

  20. Annalise May 28, 2016

OOOOP Jay-Z just dropped a new verse about lemonade. What’s the tea!!! ??????

    • RihNavy May 28, 2016

      Bihhhhhh you lying!!! Where?!??

      • Annalise May 28, 2016

He raps about it on the ‘All the way up” remix with Fat Joe & Remy Ma, but his verse is a bit weak tbh sis!

    • RihNavy May 28, 2016

I just listened to it, and it gave me Molly teas aka weak b***** teas aka aka

      • Annalise May 28, 2016

KIIIIIIII YUSSSS u betta dragging that deranged bipolar B*TCH! EYE AM GAGGGING!

    • RihNavy May 28, 2016

KIIIII! Wait! Your new AVI is sleighing and it’s not even Christmas time yet! Giving me unexpected, “I will just release this without warning and you will deal” Beyoncé Giselle-Knowles Carter teas.

P.S. NOT me the second person after you to have Davíd so steam PRESSED honey. Like…omg ??

      • Annalise May 28, 2016

kjejfieihfeifhifhiefhif I CAN’T!! Im confused, why does he keep removing your comments about the WalkingDead Stan and then saying he’s gonna block you, but you keep coming back like the Terminator 3. KIIII TGJ and their empty threats, like I can-NOT!!!! the spirit-airlines comments had me in actual tears!!!!!!

  21. Smoove Jones May 28, 2016

In a recent interview, Mya said she’s working on a full length album and it’s coming together nicely.

Aaliyah the first artist to top the chart based solely on airplay with Try Again, Shaggy was 2nd with Angel and Lady Marmalade was 3rd. Lady Marmalade had the highest audience (111 million listeners)

  22. Reddish tran ivy blokz Need UK timely May 28, 2016
