Mariah Carey Hits The Studio With ‘We Belong Together’ Team

The band are back together. But can they drum up another hit for Mariah Carey?

Full story below…

Today on Instagram, Jermaine Dupri shared a snap of himself in the studio with Mimi, songwriter Johnta Austin, and fellow producer/writer Bryan Michael Cox.

JD left little to the imagination when captioning the pic: “never not working”

The quad are the dream-team behind the diva’s dynamite smash ‘We Belong Together’ – which broke chart and radio records in 2005. It also went on to become one of the songbird’s signature tunes; no small feat given the catalogue of classics Carey had in her arsenal by that point in her career.

Can the collective cook up another commercial win for the 46-year-old?

They’re certainly capable, as doubly proved by follow-up #1 ‘Don’t Forget About Us.’

That said…

The superstar is at an interesting stage of her career; on the one hand she’s embracing the “legacy” stage of her story as evidenced by her Las Vegas residency. She’s also defining her success differently, no longer resting solely on the charts (which have, in recent years, shunned her). Instead, she’s making it rain with TV and endorsement deals.

Yet, for her fans, critics, and seemingly Carey herself, there remains a thirst for mainstream triumph. A ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ style victory lap. Or, more fittingly, another ‘Emancipation.’

Given today’s oh so uncertain climate, we feel it better to manage expectations. As such, for us, we’re just hopeful for a quality album that sees Mariah in fine form vocally, lyrically, and sonically.

If that yields a hit, then so be it.

SHE HAD ‘FADED’ which is just as good but they ignored it at DEF JAM

      • LISA LEVINE July 28, 2016

FADED IS THE BEST SONG SHE HAS HAD SINCE SHAKE IT OFF. HANDS DOWN. FADED WAS HER HIT AND THEY DROPPED THE BALL WITH HER SINGLE CHOICES.

  2. #JACKIE July 27, 2016

    Yesss Moo!

    • Mark111 July 27, 2016

      But she’s not fat anymore.

      • #JACKIE July 27, 2016

        And your point is what?

      • Mark111 July 27, 2016

        You’re really bad at arguments.

      • #JACKIE July 27, 2016

Who’s arguing? As a matter of fact, don’t even answer than Lukhas. Exit my replies and have a wonderful day.

  3. Leavaqusq July 27, 2016

Mariah…you fought a good fight. Time to bring out the flat screen and HANG IT UP

  4. MusicFan103 July 27, 2016

A hit is ONLY on the way if they a smart about making Mariah sign and release something that is elegant and mature. None of the “Triumphant” or “Infinity” trying to be young and cute while singing a ballad mess.

I’m rooting for a great Mariah single, even if its not a chart hit. Bring it MC.

    • HUMAN July 29, 2016

Yes she should work with Adele’s team instead

  5. DRB July 27, 2016

As long as its up to par with Make It Look Good and no longer uninspired “ballads with a beat,” bring it on.

    • Kae July 27, 2016

MAKE IT LOOK GOOD and FADED are excellent

  6. Mark111 July 27, 2016

I think she has one more #1 hit in her. Looking forward to it.

I’m glad she’s back in the studio. I hope she works with some other people as well. I have my money ready to buy.

  9. GODRIAH July 27, 2016

I think she is more focused now then ever. She has a better team then when she was with def jam. She has massive potential to make another comeback. I can still the fire in her

My ears always perks up when new Mariah music hits the airwaves.

  11. MUSICHEAD July 27, 2016

A Mariah Carey & Drake collaboration would be just what she needs to kick the doors down at mainstream radio. Follow that up with a classic Mariah ballad and we are back on top.

    • Mark111 July 27, 2016

No, clinging to the latest rapper is played out.

      • MUSICHEAD July 27, 2016

It’s her formula and it works for her. Hell, she invented the formula.

  12. TheOne July 27, 2016

If she gives us grown and s*** MC plus voice then it a sure hit!!

    Retire sis.

  14. Danzou July 27, 2016

I know Mariah has more top tens in her. However I’m gonna need her to stop reaching to recreate magic and just WORK. I hate when artists try and remake a hit with the same team. Say what you want about rihanna Beyoncé nicki kanye etc but they always change direction. Mariah hasn’t changed direction since emancipation. THAT’S why people are ignoring her right now not to mention her weak vocals for a couple years straight after that.

    • MUSICHEAD July 27, 2016

That’s not true. Mariah’s last album, Me.I Am Mariah, was a complete departure from her last 3 albums. The problem was she ignored radio trends this time and couldn’t get played. Plus she chose the wrong singles and refused to promote the album because of her weight.

      • Danzou July 28, 2016

Had she promoted thirsty as a single or faded then that album would’ve hit platinum but like I said she released beautiful and that other song with trey songs which were typical Mariah singles a ballad with a beat behind it. It all sounded dated because she went back to jermaine dupri who’s sound is not it anymore.

      • The Emancipation of Elusive Chanteuse July 28, 2016

She said on Complex that she can afford tons of A-list composers but she choose to work with her friends because she wants that her record is “Personal” for herself and for her fans so …

    • Lauryn July 28, 2016

But she’s been on point this last year. I saw her a few months ago and she was amazing. Like all those underwhelming performances never happened.

I don’t know what her new team has done to her, but it works!

She can achieve anything she wants. Her voice and strength are back along with the right team: she’s unstoppable!

Ready to buy whatever she’s serving

  15. Theman July 27, 2016

Mariah’s last album sounded nothing like the emancipation. It was a great album & sounded amazing. She has so so much more to offer. She has so many options. She should also work with fresh producers. She brings the music. It’s just this messed up musical climate.

    • MUSICHEAD July 27, 2016

Mariah’s last album showcased the songwriter that she is but unfortunately it was not radio friendly. I did feel her pain tho and felt it was her most honest body of work to date.

    • LmfaoHoe July 28, 2016

Ive been saying this for some time now but Mariah needs to do a JAZZ ALBUM for real. She’ll get hell pf support in that direction. A collab with Kem would be nice too

  16. Theman July 27, 2016

Also, Mariah’s vocals have been great recently. Sit down with the bull crap..

    • Danzou July 27, 2016

Obviously you’re mad but the real tea is your fave has been trying to recreate emancipation SINCE emancipation. Deal.

      • The A Team July 28, 2016

Have you ever listened to a Mariah Carey album apart the Emancipation of Mimi? You sound foolish

  17. Reality July 27, 2016

No shade, no tea, but didn’t Michael Jackson have that problem, chasing the fame and success of Thriller? You can’t recreate that moment. Not that I’m saying she is but I hope she’s not.

  18. Luk3box July 27, 2016

Mariah needs to give her all, she has a chance to get a new hit. Problem with her is that set the bar so high for herself that people who loved her and took her to number 1 18 times do not tolerate mediocre music from her. Get to work MC and show the world you still have it.

  19. Theman July 27, 2016

“Faded”, “Thirsty” & “You Don’t Know What To Do”, all had the potential to be hits. Again, it was’nt her. But radio rather. She always has the quality. Just because radio doesn’t latch onto your music doesn’t make it non friendly radio. She did have a few radio hits. “Beautiful” should have done a lot better than it actually did. It isn’t always the artists. It’s other variables as well.

  20. Theman July 27, 2016

New collaborators, new producers, and ect are welcome too. She keeps working with JD. She has to switch it up..

  21. Nicole Slaysinger July 27, 2016

    I’m here for it!

I really hope she doesn’t follow any mainstream hip-hop or pop trends to be more popular though, (kelly rowland, beyonce,)

  22. EvilEye July 27, 2016

Countdown to flop. Nobody got time for this washed up cow rehashing her old sonic diarrhea. You had your time Pariah, now sit your old ass down.

  26. Justafan July 28, 2016

    Ooooh I smell a hit

  27. JOHNVIDAL July 28, 2016

Sam is such a hypocrite. He always saying the same things about Mariah´s next release, that at this point she has to releases a quality album and forget about the charts. And then, the album comes, Sam admits it is pretty good… only for him to start following Carey´s sales every pucking day. Something he doesn´t do with absolutely nobody else.

Anyway, Mariah just doesn´t stop working. She and Madonna are the ones that have working this hard for longer in the industry. She´s in good shape on all fronts right now. I don´t have any doubt that a new album will be good. Me I am was great. And even if it is almost impossible for a woman her age to have a big hit, I think Mariah is definitely one of the few who can do it. She has that type of universal appeal with teh right product (and with the right amount of support from radio and all, just like Katy Payola and the rest have only for being young). That said, I don´t think working with this team will achieve that. I´ve said it for the last few years. What seh needs for a hit is working with new people and release a great but easy song. No need for epic vocals in teh single. And she´ll be able to perform it everywhere like it´s nothing. Are you going to tell me she was going to struggle to sing live songs like “Royals”? “Diamonds”? and the likes? No, that´s so easy for her. And that´s what she needs imo to chart well. Not that she needs it. If she does a Me I am again and just focus on the music she wants to do I´ll be fine. She has earned it.

    • Biting Truth July 28, 2016

      It will flop.

@JohnVidal Your geriatric ass is so irritating and bitter but I agree 100% with this comment.
