‘Bodak Yellow’: Cardi B Becomes 3rd Female Rapper THIS CENTURY To Crack Hot 100’s Top 10 With a Solo Hit

Published: Monday 14th Aug 2017 by Rashad

Cardi B‘s ‘Bodak Yellow’ ain’t just helping her make money moves, but it’s assisting with some impressive chart moves too.  That’s right, just as we reported last week, the ‘Love & Hip Hop’ starlet’s breakout single could very well be on its way to breaking records if the steam behind it continues at the rate it has.

We’ve already told you that once it hit #28 it made her the first artist from the VH1 franchise to have a solo top 30 hit (since its inception in 2011), but now – thanks to a lofty leap to #8 on this week’s refreshed Hot 100 – the song treads on new territory…

Here are a few interesting stats:

  • 3rd female rapper this century to enter Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 with a solo hit (behind Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott)
  • 1st female rapper since Iggy Azalea‘s 2014 hit ‘Fancy’ to crack the top 10 with a debut chart entry (not to be confused with debut single)
  • Fastest trip to the top 10 for a debut single by a female artist (of any genre) since 2014’s megahit ‘All About That Bass’ by Meghan Trainor

And, if stats from Billboard are anything to judge by, the song is by no means on its way to slowing down.  The Music Bible reports:

Streaming accounts for nearly three-quarters of the Hot 100 points for “Yellow,” as it charges 6-2 on Streaming Songs (31.4 million, up 28 percent, good for the Hot 100’s top Streaming Gainer award for a second straight week). It also rises 20-15 on Digital Song Sales (23,000, up 8 percent) and roars onto Radio Songs at No. 36 (32 million, up 47 percent). On Hot Rap Songs, it hikes 5-2.

*****

Congratz are in order for Ms. B! Keep it locked to TGJ for any other moves this colorful hit makes.

Slay Cardi! The song is hot. I love how Nicki is showing her love, too. People want them to beef so bad.

    • Slicc Loskii August 15, 2017

Nicki just tryna ride her wave though now that she winning, and because people say she don’t embrace other female rappers. Why she aint been try and f*** with her. It took for her to be on top and for drake to bring her out for nicki to finally say something. Typical hating ass b**** move. Remember all these b****** is her sons she dont want nobody to ever be overtop her, and since she can’t beat the she has to join them. #FACTS

      • Ciah’s Turtle August 15, 2017

1st of all..been try to fvck with her when?? None of us was taking Cardi serious until this song came out (2 MONTHS AGO) Nicki doesn’t fvck wit just any b**** that raps. She salutes the ones that are actually out here making a name for themselves. Which doesn’t happen to be too many. She did the same with Dej Loaf & Young M.A. Yall got a problem when she doesn’t “acknowledge” other female rappers and when she does..she “riding they wave”. Its never enough for yall.

      • Yolanda August 18, 2017

CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! I’m throwing you social media kisses right now. You hit it right on the head. Cardi was clear when she said that Nicki turned up her nose at her until Kelly Rowland showed her love on the red carpet. Also, Nicki is on Instagram dressing like Salt & Pepa but where was she during the Hip Hop Honors? She could have honored Salt and Pepa there!!! Who has Nicki ever gave tribute? Remy gave tribute to MC Lyte before she went to jail and gave tribute to Missy after she got out of jail. Lil Kim also gave tribute to MC Lyte on the same show. If Nicki was about female rap, why didn’t she attend Hip Hop Honors? Why didn’t she honor the legends??? Queen Latifah introduced Nicki at the BIG Awards show and Nicki couldn’t even return the favor on Hip Hop Honors.

Yaaaaaaaaaas…slay sis! Cardi is zooming up the Billboard charts! I mean, DAMN

  3. SMH August 14, 2017

So proud! She said her dream was to make it to the top 10 and she did it!

  4. DanYiel Iman August 14, 2017

I’m glad she did it without any features just straight up her style, I purchased the song but hasn’t listened to it because I’ve heard it 989,99,000 times!!

  5. hotmess August 14, 2017

Not to rain on parades cause i love cardi but it’s actually the 6th solo song, Missy Elliott “Get UR Freak On” “Work It” , Nicki Minaj “SuperBass” “Starships” “Anaconda” then “Bodak Yellow” as Momma Dee would say in that order. 🙂

    • Music103 August 15, 2017

“Super Bass” featured Ester Dean vocals all on the chorus just not credited. As for “Starships” probably considered a Pop/Dance song not Hip Hop.

      • Caleb August 15, 2017

I would also say that ‘Anaconda’ features Sir Mix-a-Lot ? Tho he is not credited lol

      • Ciah’s Turtle August 16, 2017

@Caleb.. and you would be wrong. Why would a sample be credited as a feature ? lol

    • ThatMessJuice.Flop August 15, 2017

Education is important y’all. Learn to read. Third FEMALE to have a TOP TEN SOLO HIT. Third FEMALE. THIRD FEMALE. THIRD FEMALE. NOT third hit. Third FEMALE.

P.S. They’re wrong tho coz Lauryn Hill is another with Doo Wop

      • Cardi’sDaNewQueen August 15, 2017

doo wop that thing did not come out this century tho

      • ThatMessJuice.Flop August 15, 2017

I took century as the last hundred years instead of the beginning of the 21st…

      • Slicc Loskii August 15, 2017

This CENTURY…. meaning 2000 and later.

    • Navy Gravy August 15, 2017

I’m not sure if you can READ or not, but the point is that she is THE THIRD FEMALE RAPPER TO CRACK THE TOP TEN WITH A SOLO RECORD, NO FEATURES. So we are talking about the NUMBER of FEMALE RAPPERS to accomplish this feat NOT the number of times that any particular female rapper has done so. So you did all of that Wikipedia research to make a point that nobody mentioned but, AT LEAST, you thought you were right.
      Missy Elliott
      Nicki Minaj
      CARDI B

      IN THAT ORDER..

    • troll August 15, 2017

Save your little rain, because it says 3rd ARTIST, not song. Reading is key.

    • Slicc Loskii August 15, 2017

Clearly u can’t read… Its 3rd FEMALE RAPPER not song! Reading is fundamental..

  6. Davii August 14, 2017

Sh*ttie must be cutting her wrists somewhere

  7. ThatMessJuice.Flop August 15, 2017

So Doo Wop never happened. You know the only hip hop solo hit by a female rapper to top the hot 100. Lauryn Hill is a hip hop artist and she raps better than any female rapper to ever grace the charts. Never forget that.

    • Cardi’sDaNewQueen August 15, 2017

that song did not come out this century

    • troll August 15, 2017

That came out in 1999, not this century. Next question.

    • ThatMessJuice.Flop August 15, 2017

I hear y’all. I took century literal not as the beginning of the 21st but the past hundred years.

    • Yolanda August 18, 2017

Remember, Nicki Minaj tweeted that Lauryn Hill was an R&B artist when Nicki wanted to be considered the only female rapper with a #1 Album. Yes dear, Nicki even turned on her so-called idol, Lauryn Hill.

  8. …I HATE WHITE B******. …and. BLACK B******. …both not s***… August 15, 2017

One hit wonder. B. Is the name . spik btch is just that. Let her riiiiiide off her last hit until the wheels fAll…..

No need to beef queen Minaj know that this btch won’t laSt 1 to 10 years..

    • iCritic August 15, 2017

Nicki Minaj is a beef queen herself. She is gonna fall off and you will deal. Barbz are too emotionally attached to that cancerous b****. I really pity y’all! I do!

  9. Truth be told August 15, 2017

I think she needs to keep working and release another song. Doing performances is great but once B.Y. gets old she’s need more to keep people listening. Iggy couldn’t keep us interested but I think Cardi has something Iggy doesn’t (TALENT AND DRIVE). Another song/single is needed. Remy f***ed up when she let cardi come in and hold it down for LHH rappers. I don’t see Remy being more popular than Nicki or Cardi and that’s facts.

    • Ciah’s Turtle August 15, 2017

      No lies told

  10. Kemar (@S_C_Jr on Twitter) August 15, 2017

Congrats Cardi! Absolutely appallingly that only THREE female rappers this century reached Top 10 solo. I’m glad there’s a resurgence female rappers. Remy, Cardi, Dej Loaf, etc. need our support! Stop the damn stan wars + just appreciate the music!

  11. pat August 15, 2017

congrats Cardi! nice of nicki, but she really has no choice, but to be nice to Cardi. anything else would have her looking like the old bitter bych and make her that more replacable as the go to rap girl.

  12. Jeans August 15, 2017

Omg! So happy for her! It must feel good to her! Love the song! Hope it goes #1 or top 5! Crossing over on debut!

    • Slicc Loskii August 15, 2017

Once the espanol version is released on Friday, it will def be #1

  13. ??? August 15, 2017

congrats to her. there really does need to be more than just 1 or 2 female rappers at a time, hope she keeps blowing up.

  14. SMH August 15, 2017

Streaming has saved so many lives lol.

    • Slicc Loskii August 15, 2017

Yes and nicki life is one that it has saved! Cause without streaming, the pinkprint is not plat.

      • Ciah’s Turtle August 15, 2017

a lot of albums wouldn’t be platinum without streaming but guess what.. GET OVER IT . It’s a digital world heaux. PinkPrint Double Plat btw =)

  15. Caribbean native August 15, 2017

ANOTHER ONE FOR TRINI FEMALE RAPPERS!!!!!!!

  16. Via August 15, 2017

Cardi wont last long, she’s wack. Anybody can break billboard records. Piggy Azalea did it and look where shes at now. Cardi won’t be remembered in 2 years.

  17. 0Joenysmith August 15, 2017

Do y’all mothafuckas know the meaning of the word century. RAP wasnt even a thing 50yrs ago. So how can she be the first of this century.

    • Caleb August 15, 2017

THIS century, as in year 2000 til now.
