New Song: Toni Braxton – ‘Deadwood’

Published: Thursday 14th Sep 2017 by Sam

Toni Braxton is back. Officially.

The R&B legend has debuted ‘Deadwood’ – the lead single from her new album ‘Sex & Cigarettes. Due in the coming months, it’s the  diva’s first solo body of work in over seven years.

Braxton co-wrote the song with Royce Doherty, Kwame Ogoo, and ‘Love On The Brain’ mastermind Fred Ball, who also produced the track.

Discussing the sonic and lyrical rooting of her new material, the 7-time Grammy winner says it’s “grown” and unapologetic.

So what are you waiting for? Listen to ‘Deadwood’ below…

Welcome back Toni!

Ever in fine-form, this gorgeous guitar-led offering proves that her tone has lost none of its buttery brilliance. The production serves as a slick, crisp vehicle driving the song’s lyrical agenda and does so dynamically. Marvellous melody and memorable hook too.

In an era where many of her peers are struggling to cater to the youth, it’s great to see Ms.Braxton stick to her tried and true sound and audience. This has Urban A/C hit written all over at it. And deservingly so.

I don’t like it. Still come through living legend Toni Braxton ?

  2. DanYiel Iman September 14, 2017

Actually sounds good to me!! ??

  3. steve September 14, 2017

Gosh! I got depressed. Like her mother said in the biopic, she sings about pain. I especially like that she didn’t try to do any dramatic vocals.

  4. Arthus September 14, 2017

So excited ! Love it !

  5. Fredrick September 14, 2017

    What a comeback..Toni Never dissapoints

  6. Theman September 14, 2017

Some of her peers appeal to a wider audience than she does. The Urban AC market doesnt help these artists move many units. Sam you just say anything. Being contemporary doesn’t equal chasing a certain demographic.. A few artists appeal to more than one audience..

    • ??? September 14, 2017

lol then why are her peers flopping without any hits, and ending up in vegas or as opening acts? lmao

      • Theman September 14, 2017

They’re charting better & making more money in Vegas too. It’s called a residency. On top of that a residency is legit.. Not to mention that a few of them are doing awesome in (Arena) tours.. This song will not chart past the Urban AC chart. Nice try silly..

Delusional lambs. Didn’t mariah flop on that tour with Lionel ? She wasn’t even a headliner. She never had a decent touring career. by the way, she’s release more flop singles this decade then all her peers. Up out my face, almost home, I Don’t , you’re mine, art of letting go, All I want for christmas 2, oh santa, Triumphant. gimme a break.

      • janelle September 14, 2017

vegas is for hasbeens, stop with all the excuses for this dried up alcoholic.

      • janelle September 14, 2017

mariah also can’t get a #1 album to save her life this decade.

    • jody September 16, 2017

Toni was one of the originals with a residency in Vegas don’t forget. She had to quit her show when she was diagnosed with Lupus.

      • Tha Man December 10, 2017

Mariah will NEVER be washed up. She will always be the legend that she is while you h*** are struggling to survive… 😉

The title is very appropriate for this song!

  8. Gee September 14, 2017

This song definitely fits in the urban A/C lane. Glad to see Toni back and more confident than ever. The song is classic Toni and that is a great thing.

  9. Keith September 14, 2017

  13. MovieAmi September 14, 2017

Yuck. She’s on Def Jam? They couldn’t have found her a more suitable label at UMG than Def Jam.

    • cassandra chen September 14, 2017

She won her last Grammy on Def Jam, what is the point? Toni been there done that and staying with her fans. This is classic Toni!!

  14. Jeans September 14, 2017

    Not a good song. Sorry

  15. Meme September 14, 2017

I’m happy for Toni return as she is my fav artist ever. I’m glad she went the classic route instead of trying to be trendy. However I didn’t the tingles I was hoping from the song. I wanted to be emotionally connected and just moved by the song as I do with much of Toni’s music. This didn’t do it for me

    • Metzo September 15, 2017

She’s also one of my favorite artists EVER. Her voice is one of a kind. A living legend.

  16. Meteorite September 14, 2017

It’s not bad, it also sounds familiar, was this song sampled? Hymn For The Weekend? Idk but it sounds familiar… it sounds like a filler track. But I give it a 6 out of 10

  17. Aj September 14, 2017

Yes yes yes! This is hot!! There’s not enough heartfelt music like this anymore. It feels heartfelt and genuine.

    • Living Legend September 14, 2017

I love it because it’s new Toni, but I don’t think it’s an automatic hit. More of a filler. A good filler. It’ll get plays from me.

  18. eric September 14, 2017

Not sure I can hear this on the radio, but it’s better than average. It’s a cool simple jam.

  19. AnonymousTruth September 15, 2017

The verses sound similar to the verses in Freedom (Bey) … just the melody .. not staying it was copied . But it sounded familiar to me … and then I realised .
The song is whack btw… I’m not sure who she made this for ?

    • Robert Robinson September 17, 2017

For her REAl fans, this is classic Toni, and people be loving it

      • kay for Toni braxton September 17, 2017
