BET’s SOS Saving Ourselves (Help For Haiti) is taking place right now live from Miami, Floria. As usual, That Grape Juice has you covered with all the night’s performances, which include the first televised performance from Chris Brown since ‘the incident’, Mary J. Blige, Keri Hilson, Wyclef, Monica, and many more . Be sure to keep refreshing as performances will continually be added…
Music’s biggest night is finally here! Numerous celebrities are arriving for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Check out all of the action below:
An extensive list of celebrities are scheduled to lend their support to Haiti during a benefit concert this Friday. The ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ event will air commercial-free on over 12 networks including NBC, ABC, MTV and Vh1, starting at 8pm ET. Carded to make appearances are Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, Shakira and host Wyclef Jean, just to name a few. {Source}
This is shaping up to be an event on the level of ‘Live Aid’. It’s great to see so many big acts doing their part to help Haiti in the best way they can. However, there is one person who many people have been calling to hit the stage at the event, and that’s Lauryn Hill. Certainly, it would be amazing to see her make a rare appearance to benefit the cause and sing in that way that only she can. After watching Rihanna squeal through ‘Redemption Song’ yesterday, it became only more evident how much Hill’s voiced has been missed over the years.
Oprah Winfrey has announced that Rihanna will be performing on her show this Wednesday. The model will be doing a rendition of Bob Marley’s timeless classic ‘Redemption Song’ while R&B crooner Maxwell is set to sing ‘Fistful of Tears’ from his ‘BLACKsummers’night’ LP. The episode will be dedicated to the people of Haiti and will feature Wyclef Jean who will shed some light on their situation. {Source}
As much as I can appreciate Rihanna using her star power to raise awareness for the problems in Haiti, I wonder if her ‘singing’ would be the best way to accomplish that goal. To be perfectly honest, her voice has not been noted as either ‘moving’ or ‘soulful’ in any way. Furthermore, of all the songs that she could have chosen, she has selected to perform one of Bob Marley’s most respected tracks. I highly doubt that anyone wants to hear her massacre one of the best songs of all time, although she will be doing so for a great cause. Hopefully she will pull it off….hopefully.
This week’s classic From The Vault video is Wyclef & Mary J. Blige’s year 2000 collaboration ’911′, which was lifted from the former Fugee star’s ‘Ecleftic’ LP. Put simply, this track still goes hard today, with the video having aged particularly well some 10 years later. A classic.
Last evening the Skylight Studio, New York hosted the official launch of VEVO, the music video website started by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Some of the biggest names in Pop, Country and Urban entertainment appeared at the venue to debut their latest projects. Check out some the shots below:
Mariah Carey shut everyone down with those shoes!
Ciara experimented with this ‘look’. Okay then…
50 Cent and Mary J. Blige posed for the cameras.
Lady GaGa wowed the crowd with a performance of ‘Speechless’ from her ‘The Fame Monster’ LP.
John Legend kept warm in this ensemble.
Wyclef Jean was enjoying the festivities.
Music executive Doug Morris, L.A. Reid, and Mariah Carey were clearly some of the most powerful people at the event. O yeah, and Rihanna’s in the picture as well.
This week’s edition of Best You Never Heard features little known gems by Michael Jackson, Wyclef and Claudette Ortiz, Kirk Franklin and Teedra Moses.

While the world unsurprisingly gravitated toward Michael Jackson‘s classic songs in the wake of his death earlier this year, I found myself doing the same, yet also reaffirming my appreciation for his ‘newer’ music. Taken from 2001′s ‘Invincible’, Jackson’s last studio LP - ‘Unbreakable’ stands as one of my favourite of his more recent offerings. Produced by Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins and featuring the late, great Notorious B.I.G, this epic piano-driven cut oozes funk, with a MJ’s trademark stamp on it. Without a doubt, had ‘hit’ written all over it; interestingly this was initially supposed to be a single (accompanied by a big budget video), however contractual disputes with his label Sony K.O’ed such plans. Tidbit: R&B star Brandy features on backing-vocals.

Upon hitting ‘play’ on this one, many of you will immediately think back to Wyclef and Shakira‘s 2005 smash ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. Indeed, ‘Dance Like This’ (recorded a year earlier), which features former City High singer Claudette Ortiz on lead vocals, sounds almost identical to ‘Hips’ – only with different lyrics. With both produced by and featuring Wyclef, it appears he simply tweaked Claudette’s version, which featured on the soundtrack to ‘Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights’ (straight-to-DVD) for Ms. Shakira, Shakira. With ‘Hips’ blowing up and becoming the hit it did, very few are in the know about the original – which I would argue is the better of the two versions; this primarily due to the superior vocals and all-round more logical lyrcial content. Randomness: Come to think of it, where the hell is Claudette, she’s so talented?

I’m a sucka for ‘crossover’ Gospel tracks, and few come harder on that front than Kirk Franklin, particularly on ‘How It Used To Be’. Said to have been produced by hitmaker Bryan-Michael Cox, this stirring piano-ballad has a ‘knock’ that would see it sit comfortably beside Mary J’s ‘Be Without You’ and similar sounding songs. More over, however, the vocals and vocal arrangements cut deep, really evoking emotion. Great, great song.

Soulful songstress Teedra Moses served up an R&B classic in the form of her debut LP ‘Complex Simplicity’. As hard as I try, I cannot remember where I stumbled upon the CD, yet what I do remember quite vividly is playing it on my iPod one night in 2005, while laying in bed. The intention was to see what the growing underground buzz was about…let’s just say I started a love-affair with the album there and then, an affair which still holds strong today. A particular album stand-out is ‘Backstroke’, which is best described as sensuality epitomised. With it’s suggestive coos and convincing vocal delivery, this stands as testament to the undeniable talent that is Teedra Moses. Tidbit: Still waiting on her sophomore LP ‘The Young Lioness’!

R&B singer Craig David serves up ’6 Of 1 Thing’ as the 2nd single to be lifted from his current album ‘Trust Me’. After a difficult few years, Craig seems to be finding himself musically again. Both the song and video are leaps and bounds better than that shambles of a first single ‘Hot Stuff.
What do you think of the video?
Wyclef debuted his new video ‘Sweetest Girl’ (Dollar Bill) last night on BET Access Granted. Featuring Lil’ Wayne and Akon, the song is the first single to be lifted from the former Fugees star’s forthcoming album ‘The Carnival II: Memoirs of an Immigrant’ (due November 6th). I’ve had this great track on constant rotation for a while now and the vid is just as good. Wyclef may be on to a hit with this one.
