New Video: Mariah Carey – ‘H.A.T.E.U.’

Moments ago, Mariah Carey released the highly anticipated video for her new single ‘H.A.T.E.U.’ The clip was directed by Brett Ratner and shot in two locations: New York and Malibu. ‘H.A.T.E.U.’ has thus far peaked at #76 on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts.

Ever had the feeling that you’ve just been ‘Punk’d'? Well that’s what I’m experiencing at this very moment. Wasn’t the video filmed at two different locations? Wasn’t Mariah supposed to be wearing actual clothes in some of the shots? As much I support the ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it’ adage, I sense that it is high time that MC starts showing some variation in her productions because quite frankly, I’m tired of looking at an extended series of glamour shots in every video. In fact, what does running around on the beach have to do with the song?

Hopefully, this is just one version of the clip. Nevertheless, this is going into the box at the back of my mind with the ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ video; never to be spoken of again.

Tricky Stewart Discusses New Christina Aguilera Album

christina aguilera promo rocket 2 big Tricky Stewart Discusses New Christina Aguilera Album

In a recent interview with VIBE magazine, monster producer Tricky Stewart discussed several of his past and upcoming projects as well as his creative process. The ‘Single Ladies’ producer also elaborated on the direction that Pop star Christina Aguilera will be taking with her new album. Peep an excerpt from the interview below:

How did you approach working with Christina Aguilera versus R&B artists?

With Christina it’s a little different, because Christina wants music that you haven’t heard before. She did things that she’s never necessarily heard on the radio. She doesn’t want a record that sounds like anything else so you’re trying to create an entirely new sound for an artist. The three tracks that I did, they’re all uptempo tracks so we definitely kind of get the club moving but it’s just a matter of her doing different styles and using her voice in different ways. {Source}

This is some interesting news. Many would argue Christina has never been the type of artist to provide original content. Most of the material that she has put forward has followed the direction that acts such as Mariah Carey, Madonna and even Britney Spears did before her. Nonetheless, given the amount of mystery that has been surrounding this project, I would be lying to myself I said that I was not quite intrigued.

Mariah Carey’s ‘H.A.T.E.U’ Due This Week

2 Mariah Careys H.A.T.E.U Due This Week

Amidst unconfirmed reports that she is about to go on tour, diva Mariah Carey is set to debut her video for her new single, ‘H.A.T.E.U.’ The Brett Ratner-directed clip is set to premiere later this week according to Mariah’s management. ‘H.A.T.E.U.’ has thus far peaked at #76 on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts.

Hopefully this video is ‘the business’ because, quite frankly, nobody seems interested in either this song or the album. It’s really a shame though, as the track is undoubtedly one of the best records off the album, and is lyrically and vocally fantastic. Here’s to hoping that things work out for this one.

50 Cent Lashes Out At Grammy Awards

50 Cent1 50 Cent Lashes Out At Grammy Awards

In a recent interview with MTV UK, rapper 50 Cent had many a critical word to say about the Grammy Awards.

When questioned about Beyonce and Taylor Swift receiving the most nominations, the G-Unit general said:

“Man, f*ck the Grammys!

I couldn’t care less about the Grammy Awards. It’ll be the Beyonce and Taylor Swift show.

I guess they’ll both be performing at the awards show, which means their record companies will be spending money to raise the production values of the entire show.

And when you spend that kind of money you’re supposed to get trophies.”

I’m trying to put aside the fact ol’ Curtis has been nominated 13 times at the Grammy’s, yet has never won, but I’m finding it oh-so- hard LOL. Besides him sounding a little bitter, if there’s one show in which nothing is a certain as to who wins or is even nominated, it’s the Grammy’s (just ask Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Jazmine Sullivan and many more). No sir…

Reports: Mariah Preps Tour

mariah2 Reports: Mariah Preps Tour

According to reports, Mariah Carey is supposedly planning a US tour in support of her ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel’ LP at the top of 2010. Said to be titled ‘The Angels Cry Tour’, the 39 year old diva’s first stop on the trek will apparently be her upcoming New Years Eve  concert at New York’s Madison Squared Garden. {Source}

Hmm. Sounds like someone in Mimi’s camp (or elsewhere) is likely a) blowing hot air or b) not quite understanding the magnitude to which she belly-flopped with this ‘Memoirs’ project. From a business stand-point (my new favourite line lol), major tours are usually launched off the back of a moderate-well performing album. Setting off on any kind of trek in support of ‘Memoirs’ would potentially yield even more embarrassment for Mimi than the album’s actual sales (the lowest of her career). I mean, put simply, if folk weren’t checking for your album, why in the blue hell would they buy a ticket to see you live?! It’s like her staging a tour after ‘Glitter’ sold triple copper. It just doesn’t make any sense.

If anything, I’d imagine her team will do spot dates in select States ‘for the fans’. Billing it as any kind of full-fledged tour, at this point, doesn’t make any sense IMO (hence making me strongly doubt its validity) – that is unless Mimi and her team don’t mind her playing to half-empty arenas. I say, she goes back to the drawing board and tours with her next project whenever that drops – provided it’s a bigger success than this  (which won’t be hard).

Tidbit: Strangely enough, ‘Memoirs’ is starting to grow on me now. Yet, it’s safe to say that with it not being accessible enough for the causal listener (something even quality music still can be!), it’s understandable why it failed to resonate with the masses. Yes, the promo sucked, but the actual record wasn’t anywhere near Mimi’s best, let’s be honest…

Back In The Beat: Whitney Houston – ‘I Will Always Love you’

Do you know which song spent the most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100? Do you know which song was the first to debut at the top spot? That Grape Juice has you covered! ‘Back In The Beat’ is our brand new feature, which each Friday takes a look back at the songs that topped the Billboard Hot 100 at this exact point in time in years of past.

Covered by me, Trent, it provides the opportunity to not only take a ‘trip down memory lane’, but remember some of the monumental songs that molded the present day sound of the music industry. So get out your pen and paper because class is officially in session!

Whitney ‘The Voice’ Houston ascended to the peak of the Billboard Hot 100 for the 10th time on November 28th 1992 with her astronomical hit ‘I Will Always Love You’. The song remained at the top spot for an astounding 14 weeks, a record that was not matched by another solo act until Mariah Carey’s 2005 hit ‘We Belong Together’. Written and originally performed by Dolly Parton, the David Foster-produced song also held the top spot on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts for 11 weeks. The record was the top song of 1993 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Outside of the US, the track hit #1 in 16 territories including the UK where it ranked as the top single of 1992. Critically, Houston’s version ‘I Will Always Love You’ largely outperformed the original, receiving several accolades including 2 Grammy Awards for ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance’.

What a voice! Whitney was a star before this song but, as she said during her Oprah interview, ‘I Will Always Love You’ made her a global phenomenon. To this day, young singers try their hands at this track attempting to emulate her every inflection; trying to capture the magic of her wondrous instrument. It’s hard to believe how much her voice was changed (for obvious reasons) over the years. However, all anyone has to do is listen to this track to remember why she was once one of the greatest voices of our time.

The-Dream Upset After Finding No ‘Love’ In Grammys

love vs money The Dream Upset After Finding No Love In Grammys

R&B vocalist and go-to songwriter The-Dream was on a rampage last evening after not receiving a single Grammy nomination for his ‘Love vs. Money’ LP which was released earlier this year. The Executive Vice-President of Island Def Jam took to his official twitter page to vent his frustrations about being ignored by the Grammy Awards committee. Peep an excerpt from his tirade below:

dream grammy tweets 475x851 The Dream Upset After Finding No Love In Grammys

Wow! I absolutely agree with his sentiments. ‘Love vs. Money’ stands as one of the best Contemporary R&B albums released this decade, in my honest opinion. With unique productions, dynamic vocals and incredible productions, there is certainly no reason why this record should not have been nominated in several of the major categories. His single ‘Walking On The Moon’ (featuring Kanye West) was a definite front-runner for ‘Best Rap/Sung Collaboration’ as was ‘My Love’ (featuring Mariah Carey) for ‘Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group’. The fact that Jamie Foxx and T-Pain’s auto-tuned ‘Blame It’ got favoured over the latter song is completely baffling. To compound the situation, many of the songs that The-Dream wrote himself were chosen in place of his own material (see Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’). Hot mess.

Sam’s 2 Pence: Can’t say I thought the album was Grammy worthy, Trent. (FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT lol)
