New Song: Mariah Carey – ‘Touch My Body’ (CDQ)

Published: Tuesday 12th Feb 2008 by Sam
Mariah Carey’s brand new single ‘Touch My Body’ premiered today on B96. Well, having listened to this, I feel I could write an essay and then some. A mixed bag of feelings to say the least.
Written and produced by Tricky Stewart and The Dream (the team behind ‘Umbrella’), the track is undeniably catchy and has a serious ‘bounce’ to it. However, the lyrics..lord, the lyrics. ‘I best not catch this on Youtube’? What the hell. Lyrically, the song sounds as if it were written for a new artist and is very un-Mariah (and not in a good way). Whether considered good or bad, I’ve also noticed Mariah doesn’t vocally exert herself as she did on much of the ‘Emancipation of Mimi’. Saying that, she obviously had issues delivering those tracks live her last go round, so maybe it’s a good thing?
Still, a decent effort which has me anxious to hear what the rest of the album is set to serve up.

Hit or Miss?

*As per advice by many of concerned visitors and fellow bloggers, I’ve removed the stream link and added it here. What’s happening to KeviPod etc is ridiculous*

what a b******* review Its obviously to do with the Janet comparions recently (who you’ve been favouring) Fly like a bird, circles etc amazing vocals. Also the vocals on TMB excell those on ILT so your argument is bull

It’s better than the lead from her last album. I liked “like that” but it really took a long time to grow on me. This is good as a first single, i like it. Im sure after a few listens i’ll love it. I don’t like the lyrics but it’s something new, show me a single out there right now like this.

The song is okay. I expected better. It’s kinda bland IMO.

    – i think the song is really nice.okayy were not getting alot of high notes but thas not what we shuld just look at her as ; a atrist who can only hit high notes cause shes more then that.its somthing neww &nd diffrent. i played this song about 15x now.its one of the best songs out rite now. not none of that BS &nd then we have janet, feedback done died out, really fast. i doubt janet will do better then Mariah.

I WAITED FOR THIS, i don’t like the contrast of her high register with her low register on that part of the first verse, BUT DAMN I DON’T LIKE THIS MARIAH, WTF COME ON NOW, I AM NOT GETTING INTO THIS ALL…I LOVE THAT WENDY WILLIAMS REFERENCE LOL BUT I WILL BE LISTENING TO THIS ALLLLL DAY CUZ THIS MIGHT JUST BE HER ‘IT’S LIKE THAT’ AND JUST A TEASER BUT I LOVED ‘IT’S LIKE THAT’ AND THEN @ THE END THEY GOIN DO THE MARIAH ADLIBS THAT I LOVE WITH HER POP-POWER VOCALS GOING ON TRYING TO GET MY INTO IT LOL

Firstly Sam, I was really impressed with the vocals. Yes they’re restrained but you can really hear she’s been working on her lower register. No whistle note but thankfully hardly any of that horrid whisper-singing she’s done on the past couple of albums.

To understand this song you really have to be aware of how Mariah works and strategises. She holds the best material back; period. She will have chosen this song specifically because it’s not the best song on the album but it’s good enough to appeal to listeners, get onto radio and kick off the promo.

The second single will be the one to really look forward to, as well as the album.

    It ok just OK

  10. T February 12, 2008

WE KNOW MARIAH HOLDS THE FIRE FOR THE SECOND SINGLE BUT DAMN SOMETHING ABOUT IT’S LIKE THAT IS A BETTER TEASER THAN THIS, LYRICAL, COMMERCIALLY MARIAH HAS A HIT ON HER HANDS!!

  11. Anonymous February 12, 2008

Hmm yeah maybe its a grower. I agree with the last few comments. I never liked “Its Like That” but loved the Emancipation of Mimi and she does seem to keep the best tracks for 2nd single. I am a little disapointed with this though. Would of thought the label would of put something with a bit more of a club sound. I got the idea it would be a fun club album but im sure after hearing it more it will grow on me.

I am feelin’ it. Sure it’s not miles away from what Mariah’s done before, but it’s still hot. I love how she sounds on the chorus and the lyrics had me laughing.

Also Sam, I’d take the link to the song DOWN. Mariah’s people have been shutting down blogs with the quickness.

  13. Anonymous February 12, 2008

feedback by janet is off the hook! as well as the video. thank you

  14. Toya February 12, 2008

Sam please take down that link. They are shutting down blogs left and right! They deleted Kevipod AND Jonny Ali’s blog!

  15. Toya February 12, 2008

That’s Toya from Toya’s World by the way.

  16. NataliaRU29 February 12, 2008

Hey I love the song. I think it’s great really 🙂

  17. Anonymous February 12, 2008

Not her best but it’s still good. At least it’s much better than what they currently play on the radio.

  18. Anonymous February 12, 2008

yo you better take down the download link…the labels taking down everything

  19. Anonymous February 12, 2008

TAKE THIS DOWN RIGHT NOW!!! Ali’s already been shut down. You don’t want to lose everything! TAKE IT DOWN!!!

  20. Anonymous February 12, 2008

It could of been stronger with more of her nature vocals, but it’s okay. It’s not of one oe Mariah’s hard hitting songs, but it’s cool. Let just see what she brings with the album.

  21. Anonymous February 12, 2008

Um, I don’t know what Mariah is cooking up somewhere, but no matter how good it is, the first single is still important and this isn’t cutting it. Yeah, many Mariah fans didn’t quite care for “It’s Like That” but it had commercial appeal to build interest in her album. I don’t really see TMB doing that. It’s an o.k. track that some fans will like, some will not, it is very chill, but I’m hoping we somehow get another track in some weeks.

  22. Anonymous February 12, 2008

my uncle works for Song BMG, the owners of Island/Def Jam both Mariah’s and Janet’s label, and he told me that they have gave Island very strict orders to take down ANY blogging site, links and youtube postings of ‘touch my body’. they learnt their lesson from ‘feedback’ which leaked like crazy. most janet fans had that song on their ipod before the release and they dont want the same thing happening again. crazy.

  24. Anonymous February 12, 2008

it’s not a killer hit, not really strong and not really original… some compare this to feedback, but feedback is a hot song with a strong beat; this mariah TMB is just okay and pleasant to hear. I loved more it’s like that which was a club banger! so stop comparing the two divas: one has the voice and the other has dance power! so feedback and TMB can’t be compared too

maybe this song will grow on me

  25. Anonymous February 12, 2008

I,m SOOO IN LOOOVE with this song. It’s a grower and a sure HIT. It’s elegant, sofisticated and very laid back… and she is reinventing herself.

And, by the way, Toya (whom i love) Kevipod was down a day before this come out so it has nothing to do with the links. They are not hacking the blogs because of the links is something else

  26. Anonymous February 12, 2008

And by the way. Feedback is nothing but a pathetic Britney Blackout ripped second rate copy…. how blind can you be to think janet, an icon, an innovator, was going nowhere with that pathetic mediocre do-as-the-rest song? Mariha is a very smart trendsetter who doen’t sound desperate as most are to have a gimicki one day hit… remember how fast Feedback grow on the inet and how soon nobody gived s*** so revise your concepts of a good song. A good song has to stand more than forst month listens. And “Touch My Body” has CLASSIC HIT written all over it

  27. Anonymous February 12, 2008

UMMM!!!! NOT IMPRESSED. SHOULD NOT BE A 1st SINGLE @ ALL. IT SHOULD JUST BE A SONG ON DAT ALBUM, NOT EVEN THAT, AN UNRELEASED TRACK. NOT FEELING IT.

  28. T February 12, 2008

touch my body isn’t a classic, let’s not jump the damn gun, is it going to be a hit probably, the dream and tricky are what people are wanting to hear right now and it’s radio friendly enough to be a smash, it’s pop, but she doesn’t show she can sing, i mean s*** she’s mariah, she doesn’t have to belt every song but at least show some vocal ability, tho this shits on most broads any day but i expected more but it is a grower cuz it’s mariah, ANY OTHER ARTIST THAT DIDN’T HAVE MARIAH’S LEGACY WOULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN OFF, RIGHT OR WRONG??

  29. Oks February 12, 2008

Haha I bet someone from Def Jam/Someone who knows Mariah In person who is writing here on the comments, It’s so obious that the musicworld checks out these blogs and just waits for them to upload just their songs.

  30. Anonymous February 12, 2008

for the hater of feedback. don’t give brit credit for a sound that janet had first 20 years ago the funk in feedback is so control. oh i love mariah thou

  31. simon February 12, 2008

Erm i think its just ok to be honest , nothing special , nothing thats going to make me like her anymore maybe a little less though, after all those weeks of waiting for the song and this is what it is.

But mariah carey and her people are very smart i think they are going the compete same route as the her last album when she realsed ‘ its like that’ as the first single’ it i think touch my body is just like a little hype track

Then next she’ll maybe if my feelings are right she’ll realese and ballet , one that we will all luk and being singing whether we like it or not.

touch my body aint the best track , but im sure its all part of a master plan!

  32. Anonymous February 12, 2008

Cassie’s first single is “Official Girl” produced by Nate “Danjahandz” Hills and written by Jim Beans.

  33. Anonymous February 12, 2008

I am a huge fan. This song has to grow just because its not whats to be expected.

  34. Anonymous February 13, 2008

I think the song is good. The only thing missing is the lyrics and it seems like Mariah could have sang the song better if she wanted to. Since the song is featured on her official website I do not understand why blogs are being shut down over the song. All the blogs I know do not host new songs but only have zshare link.

  35. Anonymous February 13, 2008

I really like this song 🙂 It’s simple – yes, but that makes it very catchy too. You have to listen to it a couple of times and you’ll definitely get to like it. It’s just so light, funny and relaxed – “like a tropical breeze”. I wanna see the video. 🙂
