MTV Pulls The Plug On TRL

Published: Tuesday 16th Sep 2008 by Sam
MTV Pulls The Plug On TRLAfter 10 years on the air, MTV have announced that their staple show Total Request Live (TRL, as it’s more commonly known) will come to an end in November:

MTV’s flagship series Total Request Live has been axed after ten years on the air.

The show, which debuted in September 1998 with Carson Daly as host, was once the centrepiece of MTV’s schedule in the US. It mixed a daily music video countdown with appearances from celebrities across the entertainment world and in its heyday was the first destination for pop acts such as Backstreet Boys, N’Sync and Britney Spears.

Ratings began to slide when Daly stepped down in 2003 to concentrate on his NBC talkshow. Last year it was cut from five airings a week to four as ratings dropped to 400,000.

The show will conclude with a two-hour special in mid-November. New series Feedback New MTV (FNMTV), hosted by Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, is being tipped as a replacement. {Source}

There have been murmerings about this since the latter part of last year, so this isn’t as much of a surprise as some seem to be making it. That said, there is no doubt this is big news; TRL has been a staple feature in the music world since I can remember and has featured some of the most memorable moments in recent times(i.e. Mariah’s On-air melt down). I guess all good things (granted TRL hasn’t been that good since Carson Daly left back in 03) must come to an end…

    thank God.I watch trl everday and it is very boring and been dry ever since Britney’s last appearance.There is not one interesting person that comes on that show.im 18 going on 19 and i don’t want to see the jonas brothers week or miley cyrus week on trl.But they have to have Britney and justin on the last show.

    Awww, it is kinda sad. Because I DO remember when TRL was really a show that I wanted to see every 5 days off the week. And No, I do not think it’s entirely because Carson Daily left either. Because certain VJs really came into their job well, such as Damien Fahey, LaLa Vasquez, Vanessa Minnillo.

    Haven’t really got into Lyndsey though. And Susie always seemed kinda like a fake Vanessa to me. But even Quddus and Hilarie Burton were decent.

    It is sad that it will be coming to an end after so many years. TRL could really have done something to itself to keep up with the changing music, television, etc. But they didn’t enough. Because yes getting Disney artist on the show as Britney, N*Sync, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, etc. replacements was NEVER a good idea to me. This AIN’T Disney channel.

    And yeah like the 2nd person said, I will miss TRL as well. Hopefully I can get some tickets to go on the show before it ends! I do not think FNMTV will be a good replacement either. This show unless it follows a new format, will get old really soon too.

    -K.
