‘A Different Me’: Your Thoughts?

Published: Thursday 18th Dec 2008 by Sam
'A Different Me': Your Thoughts? This week ushered in the release of Keyshia Cole’s third studio album ‘A Different Me’. With early estimates showing the album to be on course to sell over 300,000 copies in it’s first week, Cole’s looks set to further cement her place in the industry.
That said, we here at That Grape Juice want to know what you think of the album? Have you bought it already? What do you think of it? Will you be buying it?
Having given the album a quick run-through myself, I can’t really much jumped out at me. There’s no doubt Keyshia is benefiting from the festive sales, but come January – considering there seems to be little-to-no hype around the project and not a hit in sight – it’ll be interesting to see whether her sales will hold up. Anyway…

Your thoughts?

I actually really like the CD. I hope hardcore Keyshia fans aren’t expecting songs like we got from her past two efforts. But they should get the idea considering the album is titled “A Different Me.” Some of beats on the CD really compliment her voice. “Erotic” and “Oh Yea” f/ Nas are my favorites so far.

I got the cd. I really enjoy it. Although i miss the heart broken keysh songs..this album is really good. It shows a different keysh vocally and jus life wise. It was worth my money.

I bought it on release date & I will admit, my 1st spin made me go "Hmmmm…" However after listening to the lyrics, the beat, her vocals & the arrangement I MUST admit that I am STILL in love w/ her!! And keep in mind, if we can grow, evolve & keep up with Mary J. Blige we can do the same for Keyshia! She's in a GREAT place & it shows in her new music!!!

I think how she is so skinny now, is kinda odd for her. And she’s taking the short hair cut way to far. Trying for a Rihanna-Kelis-1997 Missy Elliott look, and it’s not working; I rather have the ghetto Keyhsia Cole with the cheap-looking,bright red weave(hair).

I got the album and it’s alright. She has a few jems up there oh-oh yeah-yea feat. Nas, Please Don’t Stop, Brand New, Make Me Over and Where This Love Could End Up are my faves off the album. Indeed not like her last two records but if played right with the right singles and video are good she can manage to hold on after the christmas rush. We will see.

Mary J Growing Pains album all over again for me.
I think she will sell 230-250k those early sales now a days are always 50-75k off. They said same thing about Bey’s album 500-550k and she ended with 480k and Ye’s 525-575 and he 490k. Brits 550-600k and she 505k. So yeah. Taylor Swift still may be the winner she sould mid 2’s last week. I hope Keysh can hold her off. It’s not her best album to say least.

She shows growth and not just being ghetto keyshia…My favorite track is This Is Us…i also like Make me over and You Complete me..i see those being potential next singles…I believe her first single wasn’t a good pick for first single choice…she had better tracks on the album that should of been released

    Right Right Right!!!

This album is rushed and sounds like a recycled "Just Like You" CD. I mean 2of the songs are old material (Playa Cardz & Trust), the track with Amina Harris almost sounds jus the same as the "Shoulda Let U Go" track from "Just Like You".

The direction is only different on tracks Intro(LOL), Make me over, Please Don't Stop & Where This Love Could End Up" Mayb Erotic as well, jus in terms of subject but not mood of the track.

Standouts on this album would be Make Me Over, You Complete Me, Brand New, Trust & Where This Love Could End Up.

I will also add the structure of her vocals and ad-libs are at the best so far so thats a real plus on the album but not enough 2 beat the quality of music on the last album.

Monica really added to the track TRUST and imo outdone Keyshia. BUT forget that it's a hot duet mixed with smoothness & power.

Overall a good album but prob needed a few fresh ideas on some songs but its alot better than Jamie Foxx's new one.

“Brand New” is in heavy rotation that is a s*** song love the vocals on this track defo..

  14. Anonymous December 19, 2008

I like it. Its not the best , but it has 4-5 very good songs.

  15. Anonymous December 19, 2008

I think this is her worst album and Im a biggggg Keyshia fan..was one of my anticipated albums of the year but didn’t live up to the hype. It was rushed. I would rather take rushed music than no music jus look at Circus lol. My 3 favs on Keyshia album bsides the single is You Complete Me, Brand New and This is Us.

I really loved this album. From beginning to end, it’s a good jam. It’s definitely a departure from her past efforts, but I like the growth. It’s a more sensual side of her. Out of the entire album, there’s about two songs that I could do without. But other than that, pretty solid effort. To me, she’s up there with Beyonce and Rihanna. I was really disappointed and bored by Brandy’s album.

  17. Anonymous December 19, 2008

THE CD IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I THOUGHT BUT I LIKE IT MY FAVORITE SONG WOULD HAVE TO BE “THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW” OR ” BRAND NEW” SHE COULD HAVE CAME A LITTLE HARDER BUT THE EEFORT WAS GOOD BUT THE OVERAL CD IS ANOTHER CLASSIC FROM HER. CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE VIDEO FOR “YOU COMPLETE ME ” THATS ANOTHER SONG THAT IS MY FAVORITE.

Her best release, hands down. I have all three releases, and she has shown growth, maturity, and a vulnerability that was not as evident on earlier efforts. The beats are crazy. The arrangements are great. This is a truly great R&B release. I am so psyched, and let me say that I am NOT a Keyshia Cole fanatic.

  19. Anonymous December 20, 2008

i love keyshia and i love a different me album but all the love songs are two much so i get bored with the music fast. so hoping the next album be more uptempo.

  20. Anonymous December 20, 2008

I will deffintally be picking up the CD soon, I have her other two and I am in love with Keyshia. Thank you guys for the comments so I know what to look for in it.

I personally love Playa Cardz Rite, but agree it wasnt a track to generate enough buzz around it. All her sales from this album will come from people who love Keyshia based off her last 2 albums, and reality show because as a huge Keyshia fan myself, Playa Cardz Rite was nothing to make me want to buy the album .. the other reasons however is why I am.

Ok album but vocal improvement in being consistant.
Keyshia can always sang but wasn’t always consistant in stages of some songs.

Stepped up but agree the album does sound slightly rushed compared to last album

  22. daz December 20, 2008

she doing her ting big up’s to keyshia

  23. Ms Keia December 21, 2008

I’m a huge Keyshia Cole fan but I’m not feeling this album just yet . . . Maybe it will grow on me . . . I hope it does as good as her last 2 efforts . . . I was not please with Playa Cardz Right . . . Tupac released this on an album back in 1995 or 1996 . . . Good Luck to Keyshia

    Mary J Growing pains pt2.

  25. Anonymous December 22, 2008

i dont like the cd. i expected way more. even though she’s trying to show a different side of her, she could have still delivered a great cd singing about new topics. i’ve listened to it a few times and only a few songs have grown on me. i hope that she doesnt go in the same direction for her next lp

  26. Anonymous December 22, 2008

THE ALBUM IS SO GENERIC….A HOTT MESS…

  27. Anonymous December 22, 2008

of course everyone aint gon like it..cuz she aint singing about being heartbroken but damn u cant sing about that s*** forever and i love the growth! love the album!! thanks Keyshia for another one!

  28. daz December 23, 2008

i should think her album should b off the chain she come with hard music sumtimes

  29. Anonymous December 24, 2008

I find this funny that Anonymous two above me can say something like “nobody likes this because it’s not brokenhearted Keysh.”

No…this album was just straight garbage. How many songs start out with that vocoded mess after a french introduction…it was horrid. Then how many records just sound the same??? I was so over it. The last five tracks were very original and inventive.” And those disgusting intro and outros…I won’t even start. Those last five tracks would be all I download…except I’m not.

And this Keyhisa album could not even compare to Mary’s “Growing Pains.” Mary’s album went out there and did it with artistry and forethought as Keyshia’s did not.

I dunno, this album was just rushed and everyone who has a real musical ear can tell.
