Ashanti Performs ‘Shine’ On Good Morning NY

Published: Friday 26th Dec 2008 by Sam

R&B songstress Ashanti performed ‘Shine’ on Good Morning NY earlier this week. The song, which is a cut from her criminally underrated ‘The Declaration’ LP, features on the soundtrack for Will Smith’s latest movie ‘Seven Pounds’.

About the performance, I quite enjoyed this one. It goes without saying that Ashanti has come leaps and bounds with her live performance game this go round. It’s just a shame that she doesn’t receive as much recognition for that as she should.

What do you think of the performance?

Wait, wait, wait…you ride on Rihanna every time you post something about her, but Ashanti can sing? SERIOUSLY? That’s just plain hypocritical. I don’t hear you giving RiRi props for improving every time she performs…

Rihanna cant sing, sorry, and sam is right, ashanti never gets credit for her singing abilities. if ashanti sounds like this, people jus like o well, it was aite, or it was ok. it never can be SHE SOUNDED GREAT OR GOOD! ppl need to just realize that ashanti gonna be around for a long time. the news stations lover her, she still gets movie roles in major movies, she still sells albums, she stil get endorsements and ppl still book her for shows like all the time, so she is doing something rite!

Thats true. Ashanti she had the bad days and good days and her career has always been on top to me even albums or movies or whatever she doin everything all that s*** true she dont get the shine like beyonce get and ashanti as well should be in that same lane. i mean i dont know but check for yr self ashanti has sold more units than beyonce singles wise on the charts well i think they tie up now with beyonce new cd out. but is coo i guess ashanti gonna do more big things in 09 thats right she let beyonce release her s*** first good choice come harder in 09. and last she is gonna be around a long time she talent pass that real talk. and she is pretty than B.

Thank God Ashanti's publicist is working if nobody else in the Ashanti camp is…

Personally i don't feel like this performance is particularly strong however Ashanti's album 'The Declaration' is a great album!!! & Hopefully this song being the soundtrack for 'Seven Pounds' will help sell some units.

Ashanti looked amazing doe, hott dress and dope dolly weave!!!

    Performance 7/10

Not trying to be mean but Ashanti is one of those stars who was at the right place at the right time to get a deal out of luck. im sorry but she said shes been dancing since she been six and i still havent seen proof of any type of dance skill. As for singing i think she started that after she got signed. to me you can pick a cute girl at any high school give her a deal get her a fan base then put her through traing and you will have the next ashanti. She may be a beautiful person but to she she shows how anyone in the world can become famous.the truth hurts sometimes.

She did good and Rihanna PLEASE! That biatch still cant sing no matter how hard she tries. Ciara airy soft vocals are a better listen then her straining and sounding off key sheep like screams she calls singing and holding notes. Bah bah black sheep have you any wool. Comes to my head everytime I see Rhianna sing live. Ashanti is NO Beyonce she mastered her vocals it only took 10yrs+ in the game thats all. I know Ciara and maybe Rhianna is on their way. And Ashanti if she keeps it up. I wish them all success to say the least!

She really has improved a lot as far as live singing goes since she came out…

  10. Anonymous December 26, 2008

Not that impressed by the performance, but I did see footage of her at a showcase in ATL a few moths ago singing The Way I Love You and she did well so I do agree she has improved over the years. Her voice will always be mediocre at best to me, but I do think she makes some good songs.

I think she did a wonderful job with this performance. I am now just wondering if this song, “Shine” is going to become her new single/3rd single from ‘The Declaration’ since she performed it on this, the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and since it was used for one of the previews for the movie Seven Pounds!

I hope the best for the future single and hope it succeeds on the charts, whether whatever single she releases, though I really prefer “In These Streets.”

    COP The Declaration

I agree her live vocals aren’t the best her music is good . . . she is so underrated it’s ridiculous . . . her stage presence is good too . . .

  14. Anonymous December 26, 2008

anyone who says rihanna cant sing is very stupid! de gel’s vocals helped unfaithful to go atop de charts not 2 mention umbrella dis r de kind of songs dat need great vocals 4 dem 2 succeed and they did proofing dat she can indeed sing! imagine if dey were sang by cassie! they wouldn’t be a hit and 2 top dat she has received grammy nominations 4 her vocals! proofing much further dat she can sing! and ooh ashanti can also sing 2

Ashanti has sung better than this be4 but glad she still tryin her thing..
Great personality and has shown growth.
Not a natural singer with great technique but has had some big tunes so she can write i liked her comback album was much better than last 2 she did. & the vid 4 The Way I Love U was firee

  16. Anonymous December 27, 2008

Ashanti isn’t underrated she’s overrated! She got lucky with a song called foolish and a popular sample but to be truthful Christina Milian, Mya or Tierria Mari could’ve sung this song. Nothing special and nothing distinctive. Again pretty doesn’t mean talented. Oh, by the way i didn’t press play.

  17. Anonymous December 27, 2008

for who ever said they didnt press lay h o can you cmment on this performance ifyou didnt watch it itx obivious you didnt because u made a comment on the song and how is ashanti overrated explain anyway ashanti did good stop hatin and step your game up and get a life

  18. Anonymous December 27, 2008

I’m sorry but that was awful. If you call that improvement, good, but she obviously has a long way to go. The song is BLAH and it didn’t touch me at all.

  19. Anonymous December 27, 2008

She has certainly done better(her Broadway performance a month back, that atl show etc) BUT she is def. being slept on this go ’round. Hopefully better things will come for her in ’09

  20. RJ December 27, 2008

Completely unoriginal, “Shine” sounds like a poor mans version of the Christina classic “Beautiful”
On top of that, i felt like the performance lacked the passion and emotion that a performer should have if they want to be on the world’s platform

her fans should buy her cd's then. Declaration has sold a whopping 317k so far to date. Sorry but that is a flop. I feel bad for her but she needs to up it. I've legally purchased all of her cd's/ dec. was good but she need to try something new. step out of the comfort zone for a sec then maybe she will run neck and neck again with Beyonce. BTW< Ashanti has not sold more than Beyonce. Tell me what single of hers had gone gold or platinum…Beyonce has several…

  22. Anonymous December 27, 2008

To whoever told me to stop hating for having an opinion… well thats stupid for a start, but i took your advice and had a listen….

I have a life and just wasted 4.11mins of it! Thanks buddy!!

we are all individuals, just cause it’s your bag doesn’t mean it has to be everyones… fool!

  23. ND December 27, 2008

    I love RJ’s comment!

…that’s not saying I agree. That’s saying I appreciate his/her opinion – it reads so much better than some of the comments…

  24. Anonymous December 27, 2008

Ciara Promise and Rihanna Umbrella performances are better then this and thats not saying a WHOLE Lot at ALL! Cuz we all know how limited their vocals are. Step it up Ashanti!

  25. Anonymous December 27, 2008

shes had better performances but this is still a good one. good to see that the declaration wasnt totally scraped

  26. Anonymous December 27, 2008

Ay lets keep it 100% real. Rihanna is bad and so is Ashanti. They both suck live and BUT Ashanti is worse than Rihanna. I can stand to hear Rihanna live sometimes. Ashanti always hurts my ears. Are you f***** kidding me with this performance. This s*** was garbage it sounded like she was yellin when she tried to “blow”…leave the blowing to Beyonce, the dancing to Ciara and the looks to Rihanna. im sorry Ashanti but your time is up. You are the weakest link good day.

  27. Anonymous December 27, 2008

Quickly…Some people should ONLY write! – Ashanti!
Her writting skills are great,But But But her vocals suck!

Beyonce – amazing vocals…stop pretending to be a writer…Her songs suck!

Keri Hilson- Best of both worlds, looks , vocals, songs are crazy!

  28. Anonymous December 28, 2008

rihanna is good and ashanti is F****** bad.
ashanti is a has been and thats how its goes. people stop hating on rihanna, she is what ashanti was, and owns the music business.

  29. Anonymous December 28, 2008

Blatantly saying that Ashanti's "Shine" is a poor try at doing something like Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful," is CALLING Diane Warren (& Peter Stengaard) a Linda Perry knocker. She co-wrote the song.

AND Diane Warren's work goes back. She's legendary just like Linda Perry.

SECONDLY to say that Keri Hilson has talent in vocals & writing comes off as a stretch because Keri had the same upbringing as Ashanti. The both came off of huge pre-success songs as featured artists singing the hook.

Tell me why it's taken her 3 singles and she still hasn't recieved mainstream attention. By this time Ashanti had 3 Top 20 singles where she was the lead artist ("Foolish," "Happy," & "Baby")! Keri has tried to work "Energy," "Return The Favor" & "Turnin' Me On" yet none of them have become or will Top 10's on the Hot 100. Not to mention she's had help from Timbaland and Lil' Wayne as featured artists, and they are top profile artists currently.

I like Keri [especially "Energy" & the demo version of "Return The Favor"], but obiviously she doesn't have the 'It' factor to sell a Top 10 record, in any major chart, at least not quickly as a lead artist!

  30. Anonymous December 28, 2008

This s*** is terrible. REAL TALK.

  31. Anonymous December 28, 2008

LOL wow all the hate…and things started off so well. Put simply can she sing YES;is she amazing singer NO. She is underrated in the vocals department, but she’s no Whitney!. I guess some people are so used to dissing her….

  32. Anonymous December 29, 2008
