Mariah Carey Performs On GMTV

Published: Tuesday 24th Nov 2009 by Trent

Legendary songbird Mariah Carey performed her cover of Foreigner’s ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ on ‘GMTV’ today. The singer’s album has just beendropped in the UK, two months after it’s release in the US.

Great performance! Mariah certainly has stepped up her game this year with the vocals after generally horrendous showings in 2008. It’s endearing to see her deliver powerful vocals like these with such consistency, especially given the number of interviews and press junkets that she’s had to handle while promoting her album, movie and fragrance. Hopefully her hard work translates into better sales in the UK than the dismal reception she received in the US.

Update {Sam}: Interview after the jump…

What do you think of the performance?

wow. amazing. im loving Mimi lately. she performs that song wicked everytime!!

wasn’t it funny when it took about 10 seconds before anyone clapped at the end! haha

  2. parisian girl November 24, 2009

no no no mimi!!!this performance was not that good!it was too nasal
    x factor was better!

  3. Ash Jones November 24, 2009

this was lip-synced. the majority of this performance (4 fifths) of the performance is IDENTICAL to the CD version. At least her X-Factor performance was live… Her x factor performance was Mimi’s best live showing in like 3 since she performed “We Belong together” at the AMA’s in 2005.

I guess a performance is what you call this, because it certainly isn’t live singing for the most part. This is like the third time that I have seen her sing this song during her European jaunt and she lip-sinching/miming every time and no one wants to call her on it. And her fans engage, knowingly I believe, in this intellectually dishonest charade exclaiming how flawless her “performance” of the song is/was as if it was a live rendition.

Let the haters continue to hate…this was SO LIVE!!! Now yall know, it’s very COMMON for a vocalist to sound Identical to their recorded version of the song (if Not better for people like Mariah, Jennifer Hudson, Patti Labelle, etc.) anyway……..Mariah has good vocal days and bad ones (SHE’S EFFIN HUMAN) …

She’s still the best singer in the business….HATERS GET OVER IT!!!

  6. Rem November 24, 2009

Horrible. I don’t mean the vocals – the vocals are fine and better than she has ever sounded in two years. But all her recent performances in 2008 and 2009 have been uninspiring and boring. They all sound identical – stiff, emotionless, dull.

I mean, compare this to Whitney’s heartfelt performance at the AMAs – she delivered vocally – strong vocals, great improvization, adlibs, runs & riffs, but most important of all she POURED HER HEART OUT. Everybody in my house was in tears during that performance.

Mariah used to have this ability to send chills down your spine. Not any more. Where is her stage presence and the soul and passion she used to have? I don’t see that anymore.

    she sounds good 🙂

  8. jeremimi November 24, 2009

and that Interviewer lady was PRECIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!! Great questions too!!

  9. DAN November 24, 2009

Hell, I watched her perform this song at least five times now,,, and still the same. she adds nothing to her song. REM is right in saying that she’s no longer a great performer. whitney is far more superior. i guess her recovery from the drug abuse only made her a stronger person. watched her perform on the AMAs, she was testifying and schooling the other singers how to sing with soul and passion and stage presence. true live vocalist . i guess we’re all so accustomed to all this Lipsynching and ‘strip’ singing we forgot how great REAL SINGING was. she deserved that 5 min standing O.

great singing. This lady knows what she’s doing. I loved it. So glad she is happy and singing at tip top shape.

  11. scott barrino November 24, 2009

  12. nickii November 24, 2009

    one word : lip-synced!!!

  13. Prince November 24, 2009

Mariah Killed this performance..She is definititely a Queen!!The only reason she didnt sale 2 much in the US is cuz she didnt have pop songs in her album!! I know her album will go gold or platinum soon in the US. Where the hell is H.A.T.E.U video!!!!!!

  14. del November 24, 2009

why are people hatting!!!!!! on mimi she is the best unlike that crack head whitney chatting about her 100 doller bills and comes out with an album every 10 years mariah is still relevant and she dont pipe the crack!!!!!!!!! love u mimi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. straightinyahead November 24, 2009

crackhead or not at the end of the day she is better that momo!!!!! you know why?? because she doesn’t cheat!!! when is the last time that momo sang live, without a backing tape or plain simple lip-syncing ???? um….????
Nobody here is hating, we are just saying the truth, and the truth is…. some part of this performance is LIP-SYNCED !!! insulting Whitney won’t change the fact that Mariah lip-synced 99.9 % of her performances in the last 5 years!!!! like it or don’t it’s the damn truth!!!!
y’all stan should just face it———– only the truth hurts!!! sorry!

  16. SOOS November 24, 2009

    OMG

    THIS IS AWESOME!!!

    It was totally LIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

F-U-c-K U HATERS, it was not lyp-synched!!! Go to hell haters!!!!

    THE VOICE IS BACK!!!

  17. Randy November 24, 2009

the first backup singer who walked out and was standing at the back left, the lighter girl, have i seen her before. can anyone clarify this if shes like been on x-factor or in a group. i dont no why but when i saw her i thought 411 (anyone rememba them)????

  18. Mr.727 November 24, 2009

Mariah may not blow like she used to, but tha b**** still got it! What she needs to do is make a grown women album, like her first! I mean her first album is pure gold, and so I hope that she make up in her mind to stop being trendy an start being a singer like she was in 1990! She can make it soulful, but not as robust as back in the day! The song she did with the Dream back in the summer showed she still has soul! Mariah bring back the soul b****!

  19. Ash Jones November 24, 2009

The true music fans will jknow that this performance is lip-synced because the very few times she performs live (X Factor 75% live, Alan Carr’s Chatty Man 50% live) he hand movements are destinct and you can hear her breathing heavily as she reaches the high notes. This definately is not live, her breathing is so not matching the notes reached.

Jeremimi – you chat s***. it is impossible for any artist to sound EXCATLY like their recording unless they’re at the top of their game. Take Whitney, look at how different her performance of “I didn’t know my own strength” was to the actual recorded version on the album. Duh!

By insulting whitney and by calling us haterz you so called “mariah fans” are just making yourselves look dumb and you reduce mariah’s credibility because you make it seem like her fans are thick (as well as deaf). be realistic and accept critism. for f*cks sake mimi is a divi she brought her own toilet paper to the studios for this performance (see digitalspy).

Mimi cannot sing live well any more. FULL STOP!

(next you mariah fans will be telling us that Cassie can outsing Leona, Cheryl Cole can out-sing Alesha Dixon) jeeze!

  20. Ash Jones November 24, 2009

Mimi is about as commericial as it gets. She sold out on her fans to produce a middle of the road album full of self-indulgence for the fact that she co-wrote and produced the album. Heck she was scared of Whitney’s release so pushed the album back so many times.

Don’t get me wrong Mimi can make good records (we belong together, angel’s cry, up out my face etc.) but she sold out to commercialism and back-fired. She assumed that Tricky and The-Dream could give her more number1s. Truth is we’re bored of her and the duo. She needs new producers.

100% and Skydiving were actually excellent songs. For her 13th album she should take a year JUST writing the thing. Work with some co-writers e.g. ryan tedder, evan boggart, keri hilson, savan kotecha. Then explore with NEW producers e.g. The Neptunes, The Runaways, Rico Love, Timbaland, Jermain Dupri, Darkchild, Danja, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench.

Follow this formula and start singing about other things as well as love and i guarentee Mimi will have a better album that Memoirs…
