New Video: Shontelle – ‘Licky (Under The Covers)’

Published: Friday 15th Jan 2010 by Sam

Mention of the name Shontelle will likely bring about sound bites such as ‘who?’ / ‘what?’ Indeed the Universal Motown artist is known for little more than her moderate hit ‘T-Shirt’ from last summer. After the  inevitable tanking of her debut LP ‘Shontelligence’ (serious side-eye at the label exec who okayed that monstrosity of a title), the 24 year old is back with new single ‘Licky (Under The Covers)’, the video of which premiered a few minutes ago.

Where does one begin?! I mean the Ray Kay directed clip boasts the sheen and polish of the modern era’s better videos, yet pretty much everything else is an unmitigated atrocity. I can honestly say I have not heard a song as terrible as this in, what must be, YEARS! Really, this is borderline criminal. As for the video, I vote ‘no’ on the contrived styling and wannabe bad girl image (a clear swagger-jacking of fellow Bajan, Ms. Fenty). Even more cringe-worthy to watch was Shontelle’s dead-on-arrival sex-appeal; it just looked forced and awkward. No, no, and no.

Upon first watch, I laughed hysterically. Yet, watching again, I felt so embarrassed for her. If she’s to be anything other than a one-hit wonder, she’ll have to come much harder. Awful.

What do you think of the song / video?

Hey ThatGrapeJuice, firstly thanks for posting this up and sharing your thoughts… but could you please use a better quality/video size for this post?

    Preferably embed this one… http://videos.onsmash.com/v/rpZbCMWTl7ig92bJ

    Thanks!

To be honest, it’s not that different from a lot of s*** you hear on the radio. Even though I hated it, “T-Shirt” was much better for her. She has potential but she needs to figure out her niche.

  3. LAWRENCE January 15, 2010

is this song about a blow job or what?
and Sam I emailed you of what could’ve been an TGJ exclusive but its okay. You seem to ignore my emails. I do have other blogs I can send stuff to though.

  4. January 15, 2010

yeah, this is awful all the way around.

i thought her album was kinda cute — it had some stuff on there that showed potential

    not this britney spears nonsense

Its a good thing she wore all black, because her career died before it even started with that video. Wth cant she at least afford a wardrobe change mid video?

  7. Kacy January 15, 2010

This has to be a joke. This girl is struggling to stay above water in the industry, just when you thinks she’s thrown in the towel, shes back with a so-so tune. I wonder who’s funding her videos etc. it’s to the point where it’s sad. She thought high fashion (which tbh, would best suit Rihanna. Can’t believe it was possible to make high fashion clothes look bad, but Shontelle did) would save her video. The lyrics are so primary school childish. “Licky”??! WTF. She also tried to jump on the electro, auto tune water-wash RnB bandwagon and it hasn’t served her well. I guess you go where the money does but the money does always come to you, as proven here.

  8. KodieBlue January 15, 2010

To be honest, she looks really Good In this Video and the guys out there know for a fact she’s hot in the black outfit to the point that she looks better in high fashion than Rihanna does because a this girl has a better body, B Gorgeous Eyes, and C, Nicer Looking Hair.
WHat is Riri doing with all that Blonde Mohawk crap Hard Manufactured image? If sh’s such a F’n Ladie, then why don’t she ever act like it?? At least this girl can Rock Fashion and actually look good in it, without acting fake about it. Its her expressing her sexuality in one song out of a whole album. Damn, you people act like you were born yesterday, and never heared Riri sing trashy words about her Rude boy and seeing if he can get it up.. Or any other s** appealing songs out there.. Not that these songs are the greatest, which in my opinion, there the WORST.. But that doesn’t mean you or anyone has the right to say she’s ripping off Rihanna with the bad girl look because Women in this music industry have been touting that look for years before Riri ever was.. Christina Aguilera in Stripped was doing that look long before Riri was, and so were many others.. So please don’t say this chick is ripping off Riri just because she happens to be one of five POPULAR Females pop artists doing the look, and this girl realized in a mirror one day that she looks just as good if not better than most or all of them out there.. No wonder artist can’t get anywhere these days, people who don’t even have a real reason to shun, do it for ridiculous reason everyday all day.. Get a better Job Yall..

  9. Kedrew January 16, 2010

LOL!!! KODIEBLUE has some really good points there!!!

Seriously, the song is not as nasty as you make it to be, wake up an look around an LISTEN to the songs that are “popular” today, what you think they’re about? KodieBlue brought up such a good example of Rih’s Rude Boy.

and it’s just ONE SONG from Shontelle’s upcoming album, it isn’t even the LEAD single, its just for clubs, her lead single is IMPOSSIBLE which is premiering sometime soon.

So anyway….. ill leave it to that… wake up an look around before you start writing off people… help the ones who are trying hard to make a good career for themselves and give them hope. People tend to forget…. the reality is, these upcoming artist, sometimes this is all they have, it’s their career and they sacrifice many things just to pursue a career in music.

I actually like the song. I think its cute and fun.

  11. Its Me Again January 16, 2010

    wow…

    I love Shontelle… but ….

    This is not good. 0_o

The song lyrics are stupid and seem forced for the sake of trying to be raunchy, the beat isn’t catchy enough, and the video had no point.

For those of you who are only now hearing about Shontelle for the first time, you need to wipe this from your memory and go youtube her song “Battlecry”. I mean it… pretend this video here never happened 0_o

  12. mez January 16, 2010

ammm Rihanna sets the standard that all the other girls follow …. are there any pop stars from Trinidad …heather headley and wh else

  13. MACartist January 16, 2010

For some strange reason I feel she has a hit on her hands with this one. She is a little stiff in the video though. I L-I Likey this better than tshirt. and to Lawrence do not feel bad Sam has his email posted but I doubt if he/she every reads any that his dedicated blog site viewers send. He/she is fake and shady but I still like the site. Maybe someone could start a rival blog site and take his viewers. I wish toyas-world.net was still up, she had a good site.

  23. marco January 16, 2010

the song wasnt that bad at all!…i see the rihanna comparisons..only because their is a limited number of female artist with an edgy look;..but as stated before america does love this repetitive club friendly kinda music..im sure shontelles reps noticed that she would get further pushing this kinda edgy electric pop music more than her little barbadian beauty mushy jessica simpson-esque t-shirt hoo haa. kinda like another GIRL GIRL GONE BAD we all kno and love !! ha!!

  24. Sammy January 16, 2010

This s*** needs to sit down. Not even a one hit wonder lol, didn’t get to No.1 anywhere. Cassie would wipe the floor with Shontelle’s own song had it been given to her. Cassie bout to drag this b****. Yall know I’m right

  25. PhleshTone January 16, 2010

I see Shontelle’s Publicist is in here letting yall know the T.

  26. yadayada January 16, 2010

Dang she did swagger Jack Rihanna and Livvi Franc in this, she did alright last time with mediocre songs why she want to change to this? because it won’t go down so well

  27. SASHA FIERCE January 16, 2010

    #ONTOTHENEXTONE

  28. bobs January 16, 2010

@Kodieblue. wow. You are nutzzzooooooo. such a die hard Chris Brown stan. Why don’t you call him up? He ain’t doin’ nothing.

  29. vegasgirl January 16, 2010

@BOBS, why in the hell are you bringing up Chris Brown AT ALL here (seems like someone is a liitle obsessed) Most are talking about the song and this artists , stick to topic please. I do think she should try to avoid the obvious swagger jackin’ that was happening,, did they just go to Barbados and pick some folks hoping that they would have the same success that Rihanna is having? Bad Call. Try again… and in America not every song that is a repetitive electro song does well . I don’t really like the song, but maybe it will catch on somewhere but i’d prefer to never hear it again. Good luck to her though.

  30. Prince January 16, 2010

Afta i listened 2 dis song like 10 times I started liking it, and im startin 2 like her now she’s pretty and her style is Hot! She need 2 stick 2 making pop songs.I am such a fan of hers now!

  31. Slick January 16, 2010
