Jennifer Lopez Explains Departure From Label

Published: Wednesday 24th Feb 2010 by Trent

Reports surfaced this week that Jennifer Lopez was dropped by her label, Epic Records. Now, the singer has released an official statement via her publicist regarding the news, stating that the split was amicable. Here is what the singer had to say:

“I am making this statement to put an end to any confusion in regards to my next album, titled ‘Love.’ I have belonged to the Sony family since the beginning of my career as a singer and together we’ve had great success. I have fulfilled my contractual responsibilities with Sony/Epic up to this point, and we have both reached friendly terms about my departure from the label. I’m also happy to say that we’ve found a new home for my album, ‘Love,’ and that it is slated for release in the summer of 2010.” {Source}

I won’t hesitate in this instance to say: “I told you so!” Lopez has not had a hit on the charts in years. Given the heavy promotion that her team gave to her latest single, ‘Louboutins’, and it’s subsequent failure to crack the Billboard Hot 100, any label executive who is worth his/her weight would have been wise to ‘cut the fat’. Whether or not Lopez made the decision to leave Epic on her own is immaterial because if the label did not want to lose her as an artist, they would have renegotiated her contract or tried some other ploy to keep her signed to their brand.

The interesting scenario that is emerging from this is the possibility that Lopez may soon be signed to Island Def Jam. It is no secret in the industry that Lopez and the label’s top-selling act, Mariah Carey, are as fond of each other as a fresh weave and a swimming pool. They could not even share Lopez’s current manager, Benny Medina, who was rumoured to have been axed by Carey in late 2008 after he took interest in signing the former as a client. It’s looks like the stage is being set for another of our predictions to come true.

This is why Beyonce won’t take a break, prime example Jlo, she was the hottest s***. On the planet now look at. Her took a break and came back can’t even place on the charts , Beyonce keep doing you boo don’t sit down. Milk the cow till it runs dry….

Jennifer got to comfortable, She hardly promoted her last album and sent out disappointing singles. I wish her well because I have enjoyed her music, I just hope when she does sign to DefJam she understands that Rihanna is the star on that label and it’s Rihanna who gets the most promotion and four singles sent out in a matter of months, Jennifer continue acting because your good at it.

@ meechy.. Jlo flopping has nothing to do with her leaving.. actually she started flopping way earlier because the media to sick of her, her album from the jenny on the block era underperformed because jlo was seen too much with ben affleck and so it was wise for her to take a break.. and now she’s failing because her music sux, as simple as that.. when her music is current and hot then she’ll sell again.

At this point does it really matter what happend btw Jlo and Sony it gonna be many different stories but only Jlo and Sony all that matters is all parties are happy. Now with this new chapter at Island Def Jam hopefully all goes well because as of late Def jam has been the pits. Also I pray that her manager Benny Medina checks his ego as well because he is causing a problem for his clients that why he loses clients left and right. On a positive note he is very good at promoting and helping his artists climb to the top. Musically artists like Jennifer in my opinion are overrated but hopefully all goes well. However I hope Jlo understands she is no longer the queen b of the label and she must play her position and know Rihanna or Mimi while she”s still over there will not bow down to you.

WOW wow! I love Jlo i hope she makes a huge comeback! It will be interesting to see if Mariah stays on the label, Being that she is done with her contract…despite what some people say Jennifer is a great artist. She isnt Mariah when it comes to singing but shes coo for her genre of music. Shes a good actress, many what to hate and say shes not but they know better. I Wish her the best, maybe she can duet with Mariah! lol

According to NY Post business section last week LA Reid new boss isn’t too pleased with him at the moment…Rihanna got more promotion than anyone yet her sells didn’t match the amount of money she received for promotion purposes now LA Reid just signed Shyne its safe to say Def Jam isn’t doing as well as it hope to be and J.LO should focus on her acting..IMO..at one time she was the hottest chick in heels but like most female artist they fade after a period of time very few see Madonna status over the age of 40…J.LO is worth over 100 million she will be just fine…lol

J Lo needs to stick to the acting.

  10. JoshuaBuzz February 24, 2010

J-Lo should definitely invest first and foremost in her acting career – thats where the big bucks and recognition lay for her, and thats where she can still be successful in 10, 20, 30 years down the road.

The main problem is that she is simply jumpung on the bandwagon of what is hot right now and putting out these cheap rehash tracks – Hooked On You, Fresh Out the Oven, Loubotins. Her vocals are weak and obscured by the rather generic production and the title/concept of both Fresh Out The Oven and Loubotins were just cringeworthy. She needs to step back for a minute and rethink the direction she is taking with this project – retreat, regroup, and THEN go for it heavy with promo etc.

She needs a mixture of catchy Pop tunes and some hot urban numbers. The song’s need to be catchy and fresh. Catchy doesn’t have to mean repetitive and fresh doesn’t have to mean “sounds like everything else in the Top 40 right now”. She should push hardest to the Urban market in US, as Pop radio is infinitely more prejudiced to females past their prime. Internationally she needs to release and promote in Europe and especially in Latin markets. That way she can be successful and make big money á la Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and others, regardless of US success.

JLO never had talent and how long cant that last unless your last name is jackson.

Mariah leaving wouldnt suprise me. I thought E=MC2 and Memoirs were incredible albums that just recieved poor single choice treatments. I thought Touch My Body was a terrible first single and I think I Wanna Knoe What Love Is was a terrible second single. And lets not even talk about Bye Bye. Mariah had Migrate which she wanted out first….Loving You Long Time could have been a pop smash.

But LA Reid and his awul single choices!!!!!!!

  14. February 24, 2010

i really think j-lo should concentrate on acting and her spanish music
her latin music was actually well received and she doesn’t have to jump on any bandwagon to get radio play

I Laughed so hard at the fresh wear in a swimming pool reference!
    But Goodluck JLo!

  16. Kevin February 24, 2010

As can be seen from Mariah Carey….

IDJ does not handle 40 year olds well.

H.A.T.E.U. and IWKWLI as singles for Mimi? …….really?

Bye Bye instead of “Migrate?” ………..Really?

Ive purchased just about every Jlo cd and was sorely dissapointed in the last one BRAVE. I figured seeing the lackluster sales of that album she would be even more determined to get back in the studio and make it happen. From the songs I’ve heard ..nope! No passion..not inspired. If your not feeling it like that anymore its better to bow out gracefully, because if she keeps promoting garbage like this she will lose respect and credibility of her fans who expect her to deliver .
