Rihanna sat down with MTV News to talk about her plans for her next studio project. The Bajan’s latest released, ‘Rated R’, has already been certified platinum in the US and sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. Check out an excerpt from the interview below:
“‘Rated R’, I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna explained to MTV Korea. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, up-tempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.” {Source}
It’s good to see that Rihanna and her team are already planning for her next release. Limited talent aside, Rihanna is one of the industry’s brightest stars. However, as we’ve seen with Jennifer Lopez, the tide can quickly change and she could be shoved out that door just as quickly as she got in. ‘Rated R’ is a solid album and definitely her best release to date. As much as I enjoyed tracks like ‘Rockstar 101’, I agree that it would be a wise move for her to adopt a different direction on her next LP. Judging by the rapid ascent of ‘Rude Boy’ on the charts, I seems that the public agrees with that as swell.

I just think Jenny-Lo needs a hit, you know? I loved “Get Right”, even though her vocals weren’t that great. Rihanna’s disc was tight. I think Rihanna might go back to a less dark personna after Rated R as well, but you know, she’s been through quite a bit, so i think it would have been disingenous for her to have an album full of happy songs.

Rated R didn’t hit it’s potential, thats the real reason why a new album is in queue. It did ok, but people didn’t really start paying attention until the 3rd single. “Wait is Ova” crashed n’ burned, “Russian Roulette” did fine overseas, but hit rock bottom over here in the U S of A, “Hard” has had solid success on the R&B charts, and now she is getting some decent shine with “Rude Boy,” the 4th single. She can basically call the album promo done at this point. Some people just didn’t buy the whole “Good Girl Gone Stripper” look, besides, it was an obvious move anyway. So it is back to the drawing board to stay afloat.
Cool, rude boy is one of her best songs, and that’s what people want to see her do.
Because this album underperformed, they will change direction…and that’s a good thing.

Rihanna is rushing the album because the album isn’t taking off the way the hoped it would. They tried to capital off her drama but her fans didnt want to hear all that depressing stuff. So it make sense for them to throw her back in the studio to make a more upbeat album.

So glad Rihannia is returning to her uptempo/pop roots. I loved GGGB. And her singles use to rock hard in the clubs.
I really hate the direction with Rated R. The overly slutty image (there is a difference between being s*** with a twist of class and just looking trashy) and boring/dark music has been a disaster from the start. I was highly anticipating new music from Rihanna but this era has totally turned me off…She needs to return with the uptempo real hits. Rude Boy is a step in the right direction, but I find it underwhelming. Hard is really the only song I can appreciate on the album.
I hope she realizes that exhorbitant promotion and prancing around naked don’t always push albums. I am glad Rated R did not totally flop because her label probably still has faith in her revenue potential and she may follow up with a stronger album.
