Report: Jennifer Lopez Dropped From Label

Published: Monday 22nd Feb 2010 by Sam

Following a string of commercial chart disasters, it is being reported today that Jennifer Lopez has been dropped by long-time label Epic Records. Ouch!

The singer/actress’ manager Benny Medina is said to have confirmed the news via email to Deadline.com, asserting that the split was an amicable one; one which occurred after the 40 year old mother of two had fulfilled her contractual obligations to the label upon the release of her last single ‘Louboutins’ – which tanked terribly on the charts upon its release early this year. Lopez’s team are said to have also shot down claims that her album ‘Love?’ was already completed, insisting that it has a been at an infant stage for a while yet (despite press listening sessions, and confirmed producer credits from the likes of Danja and D Mile).

However, such suggestion of Lopez’s departure being amicable is being rubbished by some close to the project. Instead, they reveal, it was Epic who sent Lopez packing after her series of chart flops. The label are said to ‘no longer know who Lopez’s audience are any more’. Worse still, Lopez’s forthcoming LP is said to have indeed been completed and ready for release in April.

Lopez is said to be in talks with LA Reid for a move to Def Jam.

———————————————–

This hardly comes as a surprise (and we actually exclusively revealed the fact not all was well with the project a while back). Despite several high-profile media appearances, Ms. Jenny From The Block just couldn’t strike it lucky with any of her new material. Which, when coming off the epic flop (pun intended) that was her 2007 effort ‘Brave’ as well as the current economy, never was going to bode well for her this go round.

In any case, it appears Ms. Marc-Anthony is pressing on and keeping it moving. The Def Jam deal doesn’t sound that far fetched either; some may recall the pics of Jennifer and her manager Benny Medina meeting with LA Reid and Rihanna earlier this month. I guess it wasn’t so much of a random gathering after all. (It would be rather wise for ol’ Jenny to look at Def Jam’s track record as of late with the likes of Janet Jackson and Amerie before signing on the dotted line).

Randomness: Should Jennifer sign to Def Jam, she’d be on the same label as old rival Mariah Carey (remember this? LMAO!). Then again, reliable word has it Mariah is on her way out from Def Jam, so maybe not?….

Your thoughts?

Wow Sam! When I first saw def jam as a possible choice, I was like Oh Lawd…not her and Mariah. But it would make sense if they sign her and Mariah was to leave. I hope nothing but the best for JLO.

  2. Caroline February 22, 2010

Sad Melba when she was at the top if her game with ‘love don’t cost a thing ‘ and ‘ if you has my love’.

  3. Ms. CLaY February 22, 2010

    SUPRISE!!!!!!!! *VERY HEAVY SARCASM*

I DON’T THINK DEF JAM SHOULD SIGN HER CUZ HONESTLY I THINK IT’S OVER FOR HER! AND MARIAH AS WELL! I LIKE J.LO BUT HER MUSIC LATELY HAS BEEN HORRIFIC. SHE SHOULD STICK TO ACTING!

    DEF JAM DDDDOOOONNNN’TTTTTT DOOOOO IIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. movieman February 22, 2010

    lmao beysus ended her career

she is now a lesser gorl

    jennifer lopez lesser girl #10

  5. February 22, 2010

honestly, i think she should stick to acting. no shade, i like her music, but it’s not going to get any easier from here on out. signing to def jam is definitely no golden ticket to being successful, so add that to the ageism she’ll face on the radio and the fact that she’s coming off a less successful album and i’ll be shocked if “love?” sees the light of day.

  6. DOB February 22, 2010

    J. Lo and Mariah on the same label would be a disaster, but if Mariah’s on her way out anyway, I guess it could work. I like J. Lo better as an actress though. She can’t sing anyway. Stick to what you do best!

  7. chichi February 22, 2010

awwwww the power of beysus LMAOOOOOOOO

  8. ADE February 22, 2010

lol pissed! Its true…no ones checking for her! She should however do more movies, she’s a decent actor

  9. parisian girl February 22, 2010

    bye bye j.lo

  10. Kevin February 22, 2010

    As a lamb who thoroughly
    A) Hates J-Lo
    B) Hates what IDJ has done for Mimi

I would be overwhelmed with joy if
    A) Mariah Carey LEFT IDJ
    B) J-Lo JOINED IDJ.

  11. Trevez February 22, 2010

If J. Lo career is suffering now, I can imagine what would happen when LA Reid get his claws in her. I hear Reid is on thin ice anyway now that his artists (Mariah and Rihanna) are having trouble selling their projects.

^ Except Beyonce LOL, Unlike these other acts, The Queen knows exactly what shes doing, shes got the whole industry on lock.

& who ever said JLO should stick to acting couldnt be serious cuz shes not all that of an Actress Either, Bey acts just as good & still has a healthy Acting Career. Its win win for the Queen, *THAT BEYONCE REIGN JUST WONT LEY UP*

  20. S*** February 22, 2010

My last comment was directed toward ROB Not BEYDABEAST

  21. GeeMan February 22, 2010

Honestly with the problems at Def Jam and LA Reid I don’t see him finding a lane for Jennifer with our other elder divas struggling I don’t see Jlo making a huge comeback. Let’s see what happens.

  22. S*** February 22, 2010

    TGJ test

  23. dillpickle February 22, 2010

Jenny should just sit back and enjoy all the money she made in her prime.

BEYONCE CANT EVEN SPEAK A SENTENCE CORRECTLY

  26. Good_Music February 22, 2010

That s*** was to funny,,,she was talking real Nice about Beyonce, But we they got to Jlo She Quickly said i don’t KNOW her.lmao

  27. YouPutTheLimeInTheCoconut February 22, 2010

I absolutely loved Mariah in that video, lol!

Anyhow, this is no surprise. Def Jam? B**** please, it’ll be the same thing all over again – no sales and a whole bunch of flops. She may as well say thanks but no thanks and skip any more grief she’ll have to deal with otherwise.

And to you fools saying Beyonce’s time WON’T come, trust and believe that Beyonka reign will INDEED let up once the b**** breaks a hip popping her s*** too damn hard. Or she may fall down the stairs (again) from the dizziness caused by her shaking that greasy ass weave like there’s no tomorrow. Or she may turn 40 and, like every other female artist who turns 40 (Janet, Mariah, J. LO), slowly fade into d-list obscurity. Either way b******, it’s gonna happen. If it happened to the King of Pop, this b**** is in no way exempt from it.

  28. cool chick February 22, 2010

    LOL! damn

  29. cool chick February 22, 2010

    that sucks Jen

  30. Dolce February 22, 2010

Sam you’re the British version of Perez Hilton. No objectivity AT ALL. Get your facts straight before posting stuff like that. She wasn’t dropped from her label. Benny and Jen were planning this move from 2008. And with Epic being the worst label it wasn’t a bad move at all. They already have a deal with Def Jam but her best bet would be Interscope.

  31. cool chick February 22, 2010

and eww @ that picture, shes very strong in the face

  32. rightround(U.S.A pride!) February 22, 2010

sad. oh well. she should take care of her babies. can’t always relive your hay days!

  33. Kevin February 22, 2010

People need to stop being so damn spiteful. It’s not like they did anything to you, just go with it. Express your opinions, but when you start saying

“J-HO IZ OLD N DRYED UP YALL SEEN HOW SHE FLOPPED N FELL ON HER FAT A** AT DEM AWRDZ?”

really? is that necessary? It’s not like anyone is really affected by your comments, you just come off as a spiteful, nearly illiterate b**** with nothing better to do than comment on some blog saying that “J-HO IZ OLD N DRYED UP.” It’s not like she’s reading what you say, anyway.

  34. GeeMan February 22, 2010

Epic let Ms.Lopez becuz her buzz was weak and her management was asking for a budget that was equal to Beyonce and Rihanna they couldn’t meet in the middle. It seems like Benny Medina was making diva demands and epic wasn’t having it. So in all honesty I think Benny Medina gets the job done but his appoarch can be over the top and in the long run it causes a problem for his clients.Even though Jlo is not for musically I hope she can change things around on the film front becuz she is a good actress.

  35. potatoes February 22, 2010

Yeh you could’ve chosen a better photo..
I think if she wants to survive as an artist and be more than lucky than making a few hits (i’d be somewhat surprised if she did get a hit with the route she’s taking anyway), she has to keep reinventing her sound and style like every other artist who has stood the test of time.

I don’t think radio will give her a chance if she’s doing what she has in the past, because her successors have modeled her formula and emulated it. Her appeal is no longer a unique one; anybody who’s a fan of J.Lo is so because of her past music. Even Mariah made her comeback by making music different to what she was acclaimed for. But really, that effect dated over her last 2 albums. I’m not hating on Beyonce, but she’s probably the only singer who has gotten away with it; aside from the fact that Michelle and Kelly were like extras in the group, I could easily imagine Destiny’s Child around today making the the songs that Beyonce’s making now.

I think it would be interesting to hear Jennifer try either a electro/dance sound (but not the sort of pop/house music that’s been rising on the charts lately, something more creative like Kelis does). That or something similar to the sound she had on her spanish album. It might not be the sort of stuff that mainstream will eat up, but I think it’s a sound/appeal that she pulled off well. It might grant her some acclaim for musical integrity and in turn, longevity as an artist.

  36. NO SURPRISE February 22, 2010

She’s been putting out crap for the last couple of years. I doubt moving to Def Jam will be the answer either. She’s an aging pop star. The pop music scene is a young man’s game. She really doesn’t have much a voice and honestly being a baby mama and over 40 is not helping matters. In the pop music scene, it’s all about young and s***. Image is everything. Still got love for her though. She should stick with doing movies and aim for winning that oscar

  37. BEYDABESS February 22, 2010

lLOL @Kevin,APPARENTLEY YO BROKE UGLY FAT A** WAS AFETED CUZ IF U WANZNT U WULDNT HAVE WRITTEN SUCH A LOOOOONG ESSAY BACK AT ME.

BOOM BOOM POW I JUSS SMOKED U,DONT EVIN TRY TOO C** BACK AT BE CUZ U DEAD N****!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. G.LaSalle February 23, 2010

At the end of the day, J.Lo only has a hand full of talent and the lack of talent can drive a career for so long. Her voice is weak with very little range, and her old fly girl dance moves are played out.
SN: I really believe J.Lo is the present day Paula Abdul.

  39. Mrs. Darren shellychelle Sharper February 23, 2010

Def jam is all rihanna! Any female who signs to it will be made an option, not a priority. If she wants to revamp her career, I suggest signing to another record label.

  40. alljokesaside February 23, 2010

Jenny go back to the block and leave this music biz alone. It doesn’t want your love no more even though your love don’t cost a thing. There’s no place for you any more. Beyonce has taken the s*** bootylicious spot (with talent to back it up too). Rihanna has the weak vocals, but fierce style on lockdown. There’s no where you can fit now, child. Let it go….go take care of Marc and the kids….

  41. NIQUE February 23, 2010

Well whatever she decides, I really hope she doesn’t continue the pop/dance/electro craze because it’s getting to be played. If she’s really serious about music, she has to find a new style, a new lane. Good luck.

  42. jOG ON February 23, 2010

F*** me do you Beyonce fans even know how to spell let alone, structure a sentence?
Chelsea handler was right beyonce has the thickest fans…

Anyways Jennifer Lopez was not dropped lol Its funny how people jump on the bandwagon and shoot her down she finished her contract with them, Any anyways Roc Nation is already bidding trying to get Jen on there label, Jennifer aint stupid her and benny have been planning this for ages. And rember mariah left and signed with def jam and her the biggest comeback any one has ever seen =)

And as for her music career didn’t her last album the spanish one spend 7 weeks on top of the latin charts? Didn’t it have the highest first week sales for a spanish album, want it 2007 3rd biggest selling spanish album? and want it the biggest selling album via a female in 2007? didnt it make history?? And lets not forget its the 7th spanish album ever to hit the top 10 on the BB and then the lead single was the only spanish song to debut at number 1 on trl… and the lead single was 4 x platinum in Europe…. and since that album she took time off to be a Mom

HARDLEY HIT A CAREER LOW WHEN HER SPANISH ALBUM WAS A SPANISH SMASH AND THEN SHE TOOK 2 YEARS OFF TO BE A MAM

BTW YOU SHOULD NOT READ GOSSIP IT CAUSES S***

    LATERS

  43. Bobby D February 23, 2010

J Lo sucks, and Ashanti sang all her vocals for the first album anyways.

Im glad J Lo got the heave ho. She has no singing talent whatsoever.

  44. PRstar February 23, 2010

Jennifer is already working on music with wynter gorden cuz she know what is love was a very powerful song for her and I know she is very proud of that song and her fans are not only fans of her old music I know louboutins was heavly bought by her fans their was disagreement among us for it being sellected as a lead single everybodys girl or what is love was best in my opinion and most def saw a hot ass vid for hooked on you and my baby has never left the block she formed discrete programs for low income first time home buyers. She went and put my people on the map yea it was a lil puerto rican girl who made millions broke records became friends will some of the biggest designers look at last yrs Elle mag she don’t gotta do outrageous fashion disasters with spikes coming 3 feet outta ya shoulders she do that classy s*** sophisticated look what ppl can actually wear with out being a safety hazard lol mi nena hope u at the pr parade this yr muah

  48. ms marie February 24, 2010

  49. X,Y,”and Z” February 24, 2010

I mean, let’s be “real” ’bout this, shall we? Why bother with, any-at-all, as Jamie Foxx calls her, ‘Jay-Ho’, when you have FAR-MORE talented – as the “likes-of” A.Key and Beyonce? … And who, THEMSELVES, are “of-that-sort-of-look!”

What did J-Lo “bring to the table” besides her big a**? ….When you think ’bout it, it’s not ‘so-big’, ‘new’, ‘nor novel’ – now is it? Look at what Sade has “ushered-in”: ‘those worry-lines and crows-feet aren’t so bad era’; for real! I guess 40 WILL BE THE NEW 30!

You know, NOW I understand what that picture of Rihanna, L.A. Reid and J-Lo in Miami was all about!! I can’t wait to see how Def Jam will ‘spin’ and re-invent J-Lo…
….Is there ‘enough-room’ for her and Rihanna over there at Def Jam? …..We’ll soon see, now won’t we?

  50. de February 24, 2010

    Y’all are funny!
Jennifer has sold over 48 million records worldwide. Thats only a few less than legends like Patti LaBelle, so she has nothing to prove to anyone. Clearly she’s already written herself into the history books. 😉

  51. Ed the G May 2, 2011

    JLO is no talent HACK!
